Our journey of Homeschooling

• Oct. 19, 2006 - Meme- Wanna join?

In case you don't know what a meme is, here is the definition:

"Meme: an idea, project, statement or even a question that is posted by one blog and responded to by other blogs."

I would like to get my fellow homeschooling mom's thinking caps on. I would like to challenge you to participate in what I will call "Outside the Box", which is in a way a meme. When I say "Outside the Box", it means outside the textbooks of our curriculum, a creative idea or project that can get our kids involved into a subject that will make it not only fun, but interesting to learn from as well.

If you need an example, please look at my previous post "Happy Travels" for a complete "Outside the Box" project.

My challenge to all you homeschooling mom's is think "Outside the Box", come up with your own unique and fun idea that can help your child learn outside their textbook but still be educational.

To start, let's try posting one new "Outside the Box" once a month. Once you post yours, please leave a comment on my blog and I will make sure to list all those who participate.

Come on now! This is a challenge, are you ready? Don't be scared, this can be fun for mom's and kids! Let's be creative here and learn some more. I would like to see those who participate have their ideas done by October 31st so that I can post it all by November 1st. The only rules are- it must be an idea you came up with or improved on, you need to title it "Outside the Box" # 1 (for our first one), and you need to leave comments here for it to be a participating project.

I hope to do this to help other mom's who might be struggling to come up with ideas that can help their children in areas that are tough.

Thank you in advance to those who do participate.

Hi!

You are from my husband's home state! We get to MI every year or two.

I'll be real honest, I'm not that creative and tend to lean on curriculum for ideas. But, I've been loosening up some and would like to consider thinking outside the box. Give me a few days and see if I can come up with something original. I'll let you know, if I do. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Hi. I found you via a link on a blog, but I don't have my own blog to post an entry on. I do have an example for you though, if you'd like it. We use The Well Trained Mind, but my oldest, 6 yr. old boy, doesn't like to sit and listen to stories day after day so I try to find hands on things for him to do. Last week was our China week. We read the WTM history lessons, but then I also found some chinese facts from MrDonn.org that I used to do some other activities. http://www.mrdonn.org/ancienthistory.html
We talked about their superstitions, yearly festivals, why dragons were/are so important and appear in so many places, we made recycled paper, we made ancient chinese coins out of clay and scratched in some chinese pictograms, we made paper lanterns, our sister-in-law sent us some authentic Chinese candy (her neighbors are from China), read "Tiki Tiki Tembo" and "Two of Everything", and we had a "chinese feast" from a local restaraunt and attempted to eat with chopsticks. That's more than we would normally do in a week, but it's what keeps my little boy interested and excited about history! I'm looking forward to everyone's ideas they've had. Kathy
