A Must-See Video for Every Christian

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=53858161964&ref=mf
This video was produced by http://www.asialink.org.uk/ .

Lord, please move our hearts to have Your compassion and love and move us into action to save the lost, to reach the unreached, to feed the hungry, and to help the needy.

If you "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind," you will want to obey Him/His Word, including the Great Commission.

If you "love your neighbor as yourself," you will want to share the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ with the lost and not want to see any of them spend eternity in hell.

Let's put aside our denominations and our differences on the secondary issues. Instead, please unite together in prayer and in our resources to move toward fulfilling the Great Commission...to reach those who have never heard of the Gospel...to give the lost hope in Christ. One Body of Christ under one God working toward one common goal!

Please check out http://www.gfa.org/, a wonderful ministry that focuses on sharing the Gospel with the unreached. You can also request a free copy of Revolution in World Missions (a book that will challenge you to live in the light of eternity) on the website.

Do Not Judge...Really?

Have you ever tried to help others become aware of some false teachers or some authors who are teaching/promoting concepts that are unBiblical and in stead of thanks, people accuse you of being judgmental?  They usually proceed with Scripture references such as Matthew 7:1-2, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the same measure you use, it will be measured to you."  They would frown upon you for judging others or they would say you should not be throwing tomatoes at those people and assume that you're a bad, unkind, unloving Christian.  Or they say...how dare you judge them, only God can judge...you're so unChristlike.

"Judging" is misunderstood by many Christians.  I used to be afraid to judge anybody and thought that it's wrong to do so.  But if you keep reading Matthew 7 further (verses 3-5).  You will realize that God was talking about hypocritical judgment.  "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?  How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."  The point here is that we need to continually examine ourselves and see if there are any sins in our attitudes/heart/life we must get rid of, and that we must not mind being judged by the same measure (God's Word).  I believe God wants us to have discernment...judging between good and evil, right and wrong, moral and immoral, sound doctrine and false teaching, etc.  We are encouraged to be more like the Bereans (Acts 17:11). We need to compare everything to the Scripture, not just taking any man's words for it...no matter who/how famous he or she is.  I posted about filtering incoming information here.  "Judging" is not bad by itself.  We do judge people/their character when we choose friends  "Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" I Corinthians 15:33  "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." Proverbs 13:20  Good judgment will help keep us safe and keep us from stumbling.  "My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.  Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet." Proverbs 3:21-24
"Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment." Proverbs 10:13
"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out." Proverbs 18:15

It all comes down to our attitudes of the heart.  When we expose someone's wrongdoings, what's our motive?  To warn others so that they won't be deceived...so that they won't fall into believing/following the wrong things...because we love them and care about them?  We need to do this out of love and humility.  If our motive is to bring that person down, to prove that we're better, or to make fun of that person, then it is very wrong.  We should never slander or ridicule anyone.  We should remain respectful at all time.  We may judge their actions but not their heart because only God knows their heart.  For example: Johnny stole a candy bar.  What Johnny did was wrong.  You may call him a thief.  But we should not say that he is covetous or that he is such a horrible, mean person...because we don't know his heart.  He may have been starving for days or he may have wanted to be able to feed his younger sibling or he has never been taught that stealing is wrong.  Similarly, we do not know if false teachers are deliberately deceiving people or if they themselves have been deceived and really think they are teaching the right things.  We should continue to love them and pray for them.  However, it does not mean that we cannot or should not let others know about their false teachings.  If you knew a restaurant or a chef that serves poisonous food, wouldn't you want to warn others before they consume it?

Recently, on a Christian forum, someone expressed a concern regarding Rick Warren (link: http://www.onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx?id=481280) and Joel Osteen.  She was also quoting this verse, "For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." 2 Timothy 4:3-4   Most commenters (sisters in Christ) agreed that these two preachers have done some false teachings.  However, a few were not pleased to see that these other sisters in Christ "judged" the two preachers.
What Mr. Rick Warren did (according to the article) was obviously wrong (he lied and he did not uphold the Biblical truth regarding marriage between one man and one woman).  A real Godly man fears God, not men and lives by the Book (God's Word), not by peer/media pressure or by society's standard!
"But Peter and John replied, 'Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God." Acts 4:19  "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Isaiah 5:20

If you want to know why Joel Osteen is considered a false teacher, please read Christianity in Crisis: 21st Century by Hank Hanegraaff. You can find my daughter's review of the book at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/lifeoffaith/684181/. What do you think of this video (showing Mr. Osteen's unBiblical view on pain, sickness, sufferings, etc.)?  I do not agree with everything Mark Driscoll said and do not like the way he made fun of Joel Osteen; nevertheless, he shared some great points to ponder).  Word of Faith (name it-claim it-believe it-get it) Movement and Prosperity Gospel have led many astray.

God wants us to be free from sin, not from sufferings and trials. He wants us to be holy, not wealthy and healthy. I believe God provides and God heals but in many cases, God sustains people by providing strength, peace, joy, courage and heal their hearts while they still have to endure physical/mental problems, sickness, and hardships in life on earth. "I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33

If you think of "prosperous" as advancing in the pursuit of God & of furthering His kingdom and being rich in faith, then by all means, be prosperous. I'm all for abiding in Jesus and bearing good fruit. However, Joel Osteen and other prosperity preachers believe in something else that is not Biblical. I was born and raised up in a third world country where there are slums and children search through garbage for food/survival. Do you think poor people, barely surviving people, starving people don't have enough faith in God? Do you think people who struggle with physical or mental problems don't have enough faith in God? That's what Word of Faith Movement preachers and Prosperity Gospel preachers believe. Look at Joni Eareckson Tada and Nick Vujicic; God has not healed them physically yet but He has been using them mightily to reach people with the Good News and His love. Look at Charles H. Spurgeon who suffered physically and mentally (battling with depression) all his life; God used him to bless and minister to countless people. You don't think Paul had hardships? "They (Paul and Barnabas) preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. 'We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,' they said." Acts 14:21-22 Paul is implying that following Christ (a life of faith) is not a life free of hardships.

Someone quoted 3 John 1:2, "Dear Friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well."...saying that God wants us to be healthy (what Joel Osteen believes).
My response: That verse is John's prayer for Gaius. Of course, anyone would pray for good health. John continues in verse 4, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth."  Walking in truth is more important than having good health. I believe God wants us to be more concerned about our heart, soul, and spirit than our physical condition.  God wants us to be faithful, thankful, and joyful whether in health or in sickness. We should pray for God's will to be done in our life.  If you are diagnosed with cancer, what will you say?  Will you blame God if He never heals you...will you blame yourself that you should have had more faith?  If you truly believe God wants people to be healthy, you believe it's His will...and if it's His will, when you pray for healing, He should heal you, right?

I do not want any of you to just believe my words, Hank's words, or Driscoll's words. I hope you all do your own investigation on these questionable preachers, search the Scriptures, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you.  Judge for yourself :)!

Motivate Me Monday!--Filtering Outgoing Information

Last week, I posted about filtering incoming information through God's Word and discernment.  Due to technology again, we have so many opportunities to share information, opinions, ideas, feelings, etc.  Emails, blogs, forums, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube are just some examples.  I'm not going to talk about safety issues here.  I will focus on taking our thoughts and our words captive and on integrity.  As a follower of Christ, I do not want to tarnish His name in any way, including how I communicate.  "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:14  This applies to my written/typed words, too.

How should we filter our outgoing information?  Perhaps a good start would be this:
"When I want to speak...let me think first:- Is it true?
                                                                         - Is it kind?
                                                                         - Is it necessary?
If not, let it be left unsaid
." ~Babcock

Before you hit "send" or  "comment" button, please make sure your message is truthful, kind, and necessary (I know this last one is kind of subjective :)).  In addition, I ask myself whether my message is helpful, friendly, and edifying.

There are lots of wonderful verses in the Bible about tongue and speech that would apply to our writing and communicating in general as well.  In my post titled, "Taming the Tongue," I shared that,

"Our speech should be: Gentle and gracious

                            Respectful

                            Encouraging

                            Appropriate

                            Truthful"

I believe our outgoing information should also be G.R.E.A.T. :).  "Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near." Philippians 4:5

When people leave you comments that upset you and/or you engage in a heated discussion on a forum, please take time to pray and think things through before you respond.  I have been in those situations before and my first reaction was neither pretty nor pleasant :).  I needed to calm down and pray for God's wisdom on how to respond in love, kindness, gentleness, and with humility.  My attitudes need to be right in God's eyes.  Ask yourself if you would rather be righteous or be right (win the argument, have the last word, etc.)  "Both" is my answer :)...just kidding.  Do we extend grace and mercy (that we have received so much from God) to others?

"A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered." Proverbs 17:27

"In everything set them an example by doing what is good.  In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us." Titus 2:7-8

Other things to keep in mind...

- Do not misuse God's name in your writing.  I posted about this issue here.
- Do not slander anyone.
- Do not gossip.
- Do not cause others to stumble.
- Do not plagiarize.
- Be considerate.
- Be a peacemaker, not troublemaker.

Motivate Me Monday!--Filtering Incoming Information

Nowadays because of the technology, we are bombarded with information at every turn.  It can be overwhelming and exhausting at times.  More importantly, it can sometimes be dangerous and deceiving.  Who or which sources can you trust?  Especially when it is pertaining to important issues, the information received may affect/alter our (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) well-being, our moral standards, our beliefs, and our opinions either directly or indirectly.

I am glad and thankful that there is one source I can always trust and rely on: the Bible.  I would like to encourage you to be more like the Bereans.  "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."  Acts 17:11  We need to compare everything to the Scriptures.  Don't be quick to believe what preachers, teachers, leaders, bloggers, or commenters (no matter how famous/well-known/well-respected these people are) say without checking out what God's Word says.  People can be wrong.  They can make mistakes.  The Bereans did not just take Paul's word for it; they examined the Scriptures to see if what Paul said was true.  Yes, we are to listen to advice and accept instruction but not blindly; we need to be able to filter and choose only good, wise, Godly advice and instruction.  We must teach our children to do the same.  How can we/anybody have wise discernment?  We gain discernment by reading/studying the Bible everyday, familiarizing ourselves with the truth so that we can immediately detect any lies we encounter.  We also gain discernment by praying and asking God for wisdom.  "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." James 1:5  I personally continue to ask Him to help me interpret and understand His Word correctly.  You might be surprised if you knew how many false teachers and false beliefs among "Christians" there are out there.  I highly recommend you read Christianity in Crisis 21st Century by Hank Hanegraaff.  My daughter's review of the book can be found here.  Next Monday, I will write about filtering outgoing information.

Bonus:- I found an interesting, well-researched, & well-written article called, "Should We Keep the Sabbath?"  If you ever wonder about the Sabbath, please read it.
             - My 15 year old daughter has made her first short film titled, "How Would You Feel?"  She would love to hear what you think about it.

Our Thoughts on Tithe

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." Psalm 24:1

Everything (more than just 10%) belongs to the Lord! On earth, we are simply His stewards. He entrusts us to manage all He owns in the ways that will glorify and honor Him. We need to use our time, talents, and treasures wisely and according to His will.

We need to give all of ourselves to the Lord. Many give 10% and consider that the rest of their resources can be spent at their discretion. Let's realize that God owns all of us, including our resources. Let's spend them as He leads us by His Word and His Spirit. The New Testament portrays the concept of freewill sharing and equity among believers.  "Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, as it is written: 'He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little." 2 Corinthians 8:13-15

We, as the body of Christ, are called to reach out to a lost and dying world. We need to deny ourselves, carry our crosses, and follow Jesus.  We need to live lives of "New Testament" simplicity, and not in luxury and self indulgence.  We believe there is a significant mismanagement of God's money among His Church (the body of Christ) in affluent countries. The Church should not be spending billions of dollars on church buildings, church salaries, and unnecessary/extravagant personal items/hobbies/property.  (Certainly, the worker deserves his wages, but his work must be in accordance with the Father's will. The Church is not a business.) These resources should be spent on reaching the millions of people who have never heard of the Gospel even once, and on providing them with the Word of God in their own language. Sadly, we are spending the majority of our resources on the areas of the world where Christ has already been preached. "More than 95 percent of the total church budget in the United States is spent at home to maintain programs rather than to reach out in mission. Of the five percent that goes overseas to mission, less than half of one percent is used to reach the lost." (K.P. Yohannan, The Road to Reality, p. 118) It is unjust to share the Gospel of Jesus repeatedly to people who have already heard when there are those who have not heard the Gospel of Jesus even once. These resources need to be quickly redistributed so that the majority of the Church's resources are sent to the unreached people groups of the world.

We need to give to native missionaries who are reaching the unreached (i.e., Gospel for Asia), to organizations that are actively sharing the Gospel in unreached areas (i.e., Campus Crusade for Christ-Jesus film ministries), and to organizations that are actively translating the Bible into unreached languages (i.e., Wycliffe). We encourage you to read Revolution in World Missions by K.P. Yohannan if you have never read it yet. You may request a free copy of the book at http://www.gfa.org/ .

We should also generously give food, clothing, shelter, and medical supplies where possible to the neediest from among mankind. We need to give to those who could not otherwise receive the basic needs of life from anyone else. Many of us are so comfortable and wealthy compared to these needy ones. If we live simply and pool our resources together, by God's grace there will be enough for everyone throughout the world who is in need (remember the five loaves and two fish). We need to join together in praying and giving to those in need across the world as God directs.

"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7

"Sell your possessions and give to the poor.  Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:33, 34

Striving to be good stewards,
Eric and Urailak

What Do You Smell Like?

Don't you just love the smells on Thanksgiving Day?  The aromas of delicious food warm our heart and awaken our appetites.  Our sense of smell gives us pleasure when we smell something wonderful like roast turkey, candied yams, fresh dinner rolls, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, etc. on Thanksgiving Day.  On the other hand, our sense of smell can bring us much displeasure when we smell something horrible like skunk's spray or rotten food or dirty socks or sweaty passengers' arm pits/body odor in a super crowded bus with closed windows on an over 100 degrees day (I have personally experienced the last one in Thailand).  Now have you ever thought about what you smell like?  How we live our lives sends a fragrance out that other people can smell.

"But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.  For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.  And who is equal to such a task?  Unlike so many, we do not peddle the Word of God for profit.  On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God."  2 Corinthians 2:14-17

Tomorrow, while we enjoy the aromas of fine food, I hope we'll be reminded that we are to live as the aroma of Christ; that our lives are to draw others to our Lord, not away from Him.

"Live in such a way that those who know you but don't know God, will come to know God because they know you."  Anonymous

(Last year, during Thanksgiving time, I posted A Heart Exam and Let's Make Everyday Thanksgiving Day.)

Falling Away?

Recently, I have left a few long comments on a website's post.  In that post, the writer (a sister in Christ) mentioned about the division among Christians and some "Christians" falling away from the faith.  I would like to share my thoughts here, too :).  Here's part of my comments:-

True Christ's followers bear good fruit and have a heart that wants to please God. It is sad but true that some people call themselves "Christians" but continue to live in sin and do whatever they're pleased (neglecting what God says). I believe they just consider "salvation" as a fire insurance. In fact, they have never been born again.

It's a matter of the heart. Ultimately, only God knows who is saved and who is not. I am not one to judge anyone's salvation. I just share what I have observed: some say the sinner's prayer...without true repentance...without genuine desire to die to self and to live in Christ.

John 15:1-8 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples."

After I left my comment, she asked what I think of people who fall away from the faith and live in the world again for a season like how Peter denied Christ .

My answer: Peter denied Christ with his lips out of fear, but he never denied Christ in his heart.  Matthew 26:75 "And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice.  And he went out, and wept bitterly." (showing repentance).  I believe Peter never stopped believing in Jesus and loving Him.  After Jesus Christ's resurrection, He asked Peter three times whether Peter loved Him.  Each time Peter replied that he loved Jesus, Jesus said, "Feed My Sheep." (John 21:15-19)  Amazingly, Jesus not only offered Peter forgiveness and love, but He also commissioned Peter for ministry.  We, like Peter, have failed God at one time or another; yet God's amazing grace and His compassion are overwhelming.  "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (I John 1:9)   (Added note: In my opinion, Peter had never fallen away from the faith.)  By the way, failing or struggling does not mean one is not saved. Paul struggled (Romans 7:18-20). We all do fail, struggle, and/or make wrong choices at times.

Now let's look at Hebrews 6:4-6, "For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame."  The prime example of this is Judas Iscariot.  I John 2:19 says about the antiChrists, "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us."  From us, but not of us!

What do I think of people who fall away from the faith and live in the world again for a season?  God is outside of time.  He knows who is His and who is not.  He does not turn a switch on/off (saved/not saved).  It is the attitudes of the heart.  Failing, struggling, or making wrong choices are different than falling away from the faith/ turning your back on God/ ongoing rejection of the Holy Spirit/ denying the deity of Christ/ keeping on sinning continually.    It goes back to the question whether those people were truly saved in the first place.  The Bible says that no one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him and he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.   The Bible also says that no one who lives in Him keeps on sinning and no one who continues to sin has either seen Him or known Him.  This refers to an ongoing sinning/living in darkness.  "In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother." (I John 3:10)  "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.  If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." (I John 2:15-16)

We are saved by grace through faith unto good works (Ephesians 2:8-10)  Saving faith will produce good works.

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church.  Please join me and other brothers and sisters in Christ in praying for the persecuted Christians and their persecutors.  For more details, please visit http://www.persecution.com/topStory_IDOP2008. html.   For specific prayer requests, please visit http://www.persecutionblog.com.  If you would like to watch videos about the persecuted church and the Voice of the Martyrs's involvement, please visit http://www.youtube.com/user/VoiceOfTheMartyrsUSA

1 Corinthians 12:26 "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it." (In reference to the body of Christ, the Church)
We often take our freedom for granted here in America.  Are we using our freedom to tell others about Jesus?  We live a life of luxury here compared to many people in other countries.  Are we sharing with those in need?  Live your faith and your love out loud!  Pray for courage and boldness, willingness and opportunity, grace and gentleness ...then go tell of God's love to all the world.  In addition, please remember (not just today) to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering for our Savior, who are beaten for "loving Jesus", who risk all to serve the King of kings, who give up everything to follow the Prince of Peace, who sacrifice so that others can hear the Good News.
"In fact, everyone who wants to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." 2 Timothy 3:12
Many Christians who share the Gospel and desire to live a Godly life experience some kind of persecution or trial in every country.  However, the Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) focuses their help on the Christians who are not allowed by government policy to obtain or distribute Bibles and other Christian literature, and those who are arrested, attacked,...whose freedom and/or possessions were taken away due to their faith in Jesus Christ.  Here is the list of countries where Christians are continually being persecuted:-

My "To Do" List

I like making lists.  It doesn't mean I always remember to look at the lists or accomplish all that is on the lists :).  Anyway, lists are a helpful reminder.  I was thinking I should jot down a "To Do" list assigned by the Master to remind myself.  There are so many but here are some of the biggies (in my opinion).

- Love the Lord my God with all my heart and with all my soul and with all my mind (Matthew 22:37)

- Love my neighbor as myself (Matthew 22:39)

- Worship the Lord our Maker (Psalm 95:6-7)

- Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything Jesus has commanded me (Matthew 28:19-20)

- Study and memorize God's Word (Psalm 119:11, 105)

- Obey all of the 10 commandments (Exodus 20:3-17)

- Fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness (Joshua 24:14a, I Chronicles 28:9)

- Remain in Jesus and bear fruit (John 15:4-5, Galatians 5:22-23)

- Trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5)

- Do to others what I would have them do to me (Matthew 7:12)

- Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with my God (Micah 6:8)

- Hate what is evil; cling to what is good (Romans 12:9, I Thessalonians 5:21-22)

- Share with God's people who are in need (Romans 12:13a, Hebrews 13:16)

- Practice hospitality (Romans 12:13b, I Peter 4:9)

- Love one another deeply, from the heart with God's love (I Peter 1:22b, I Corinthians 13:4-7)

- Do everything in love (I Corinthians 16:14)

- Live by faith, not by sight (II Corinthians 5:7)

- Give generously and cheerfully (II Corinthians 9:6-7)

- Carry each other's burdens...fulfilling the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2)

- Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave me (Ephesians 4:32)

- Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.  Sing and make music in my heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:19-20)

- Submit to my husband as to the Lord in everything (Ephesians 5:22, 24)

- Respect my husband (Ephesians 5:33b)

- Put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-17)

- Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.  With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints (Ephesians 6:18)

- Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than myself (Philippians 2:3)

- Have a Christ-like attitude (Philippians 2:5-11)

- Do everything without complaining or arguing (Philippians 2:14)

- Rejoice in the Lord always (Philippians 4:4a) and be joyful always (I Thessalonians 5:16a)

- Work at whatever I do with all my heart, as working for the Lord, not for men (Colossians 3:23)

- Pursue righteousness, Godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness (I Timothy 6:11)

- Be discreet/self-controlled, chaste, keeper at home, good, obedient to my husband (Titus 2:5)

- Encourage one another toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24-25)

- Fix my eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2a)

- Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy (Hebrews 12:14a)

- Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry (James 1:19-20)

- Embrace a gentle and quiet spirit (I Peter 3:3-4)

- Hold my tongue when appropriate/necessary (Proverbs 10:19, Proverbs 17:28)

- Train my children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6) and impress upon my children God's commandments (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

- Discipline my children (Proverbs 29:17)

I understand that our relationship with Jesus is much more than just a "To Do" list.  Yet He said if we love Him, we are to obey His commands (John 14:15, 21, I John 5:3).  By God's grace and with His help, I hope and pray that I will be able to accomplish all that is on this list.  I know I will fail at times; however, I will continually strive to please God and aim for perfection (II Corinthians 5:9, II Corinthians 13:11).  I desire to live my life by the Book (Bible)/God's standard...live according to His will...nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.

Insight from my 6 year old son

Last week at Pogy's Subs, on our table there was a laminated card that had this saying:

Dear God,

So far today I've done all right.  I haven't gossiped, I haven't lost my temper, I haven't lied or cheated.  I haven't been greedy, or grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent.  I'm very thankful for that, but, in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed.  And from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help.  Amen.

We all smiled after we finished reading it...except my 6 year old son.  He had a serious look on his face while he claimed, "That's not true!"  We asked, "What do you mean?"  He explained, "This person said she hasn't done anything bad so far but that's not true.  She has been boasting."  Wow...my son had a deep thought!  It is often easy for us to think that we are doing all right or that we are doing better than that person or those people.  We need to be very careful not to let pride creep in our heart and mind.  Pride pushes God aside; God hates pride.

"As it is, you boast and brag.  All such boasting is evil." James 4:16

"This is what the Lord says: 'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord" Jeremiah 9:23-24

"If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.  ....But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."  2Corinthians 11:30, 12:9

"Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything, for ourselves, but our competence comes from God." 2 Corinthians 3:5

By the way, we can sin even when we're still lying in bed.  We need to remember to take captive our every thought to make it obedient to Christ....in bed and out of bed.

Loving Muslims Through Prayer

30-Days International asks Christians to pray for Muslims during Ramadan each year.  This year, Ramadan takes place from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30.  You can view a video about this international prayer network here.  You may want to sign up for their free e-newsletter. During the 30 days of Ramadan, they will email you daily prayer articles.  They also provide several free downloads which include prayer guides/booklets (one designed especially just for kids).

Interjection Woe

I am grieved to see a lack of reverence for our Almighty God more and more in the world, especially in America.  People use God's name in vain left and right.

"You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name." Exodus 20:7

This is very serious! It is sad that even some Christians use God's name in vain. I believe (hope) most of them do so without realizing it. It is bad enough when they use it orally as a habit. In addition, I have come across several blogs and comments on Facebook where Christians misuse God's name in their writing. When you interject "g_sh", "g_lly", or "g_e" (add o in the first two blanks and e in the second blank), you use God's name in vain because the former two are a euphemistic variation of God and the latter is a euphemistic shortening of Jesus (see dictionary). "OMG" is included (I don't even want to type those 3 letters here).

Another sad thing is that many foreigners desire to act and speak like Americans so they adopt American interjections including those three mentioned above.  Next time you are about to either exclaim with delight or express surprise, please avoid the forewarned "interjection woe."

Do Hard Things

DSC04504 DSC04510

On May 3rd, my 14 year old daughter and I attended the "Do Hard Things" Conference presented by Alex & Brett Harris, the twin founders of the Rebelution, and their father, Gregg Harris.  The twins also wrote a book titled, Do Hard Things (A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations).  It was a wonderful conference making a positive impact on teens.  The worship team was led by Joel Harris (one of the twins' brothers).  The songs selected were meaningful.  I would like to share part of the lyric to one of the songs: "We must go, live to feed the hungry, stand beside the broken...we must go.  Stepping forward...Keep us from just singing.  Move us into action...we must go."  I was so glad to see the session during which their Dad shared the Gospel and 127 submitted their lives to the Lord.  Awesome!

I appreciate the fact that the twins encouraged teens to do hard things "for God’s glory" (for the right reason), not just simply do hard things for the sake of doing hard things.   Soli Deo Gloria!  We all (not just teens) need to keep growing spiritually and trying to live up to God's standard/expectation.  Do we delight in the Lord and His Word?  Are we bearing good fruit (the fruit of the Spirit)?  Is our heart yearning to please God?  Does our life demonstrate evidence of grace, love (sacrificial kind of love), faith, humility, and obedience to God?  How are our attitudes of the heart?

Have you ever read a book called, Kathy written by Barbara Miller (and another person I can’t remember the name)? Kathy Miller is a great example of doing hard things. When she was 13, she got hit by a car. She was in coma and expected not to live…then even if she lived, they expected her not to be able to walk. However, God healed her (the miracle part)! The “doing hard thing” part is that only 6 months after she came out of the coma, she ran 6 ½ miles! And she used that to show the world: “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

My "hard things" I need to work on:-

- Memorizing the Scripture

- Staying calm and not raising my voice when upset

- Managing time wisely

- Taking a driving test

What "hard things" do you need to do, try to do, or hope to do?

"Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is."  Ephesians 5:15-17  Let's keep obeying God, seeking His will, and serving Him no matter how “hard” things get :) .

Zer0 is g00d!

Usually, when we think of "zero," we think of something negative such as zero points on a score board, zero on a test, zero dollars in our checkbook, etc.  But "zero" can be good, very good :)!

Do you know what's in your water?  It's not easy to find water that's just water. Yesterday, we bought "ZeroWater," a water filtration system that completely removes organic contaminants and metals.  The kit included an electronic water tester TDS.  This TDS meter is a very cool gadget!  It's the same testing tool used in labs to check for the presence of contaminants.  We had lots of fun testing water from different sources.  Our tap water showed 031 (parts per million), our filtered water that we had been using (Pur) showed 020, and bottled water showed 038 .  But when we tested the water that's been filtered by our new system, the meter showed 000 (hence the name "ZeroWater").  As pure as it gets, folks :)!  The reading 000 indicates that the tester detects no traces of dissolved solids and chemicals that are usually found in your tap and bottled water.  We're joking about taking this meter with us when we go eat out at restaurants and using it to test their water.  Water Inspectors we are!!!

Now...wouldn't it be interesting to have a heart tester that can detect if there are any contaminants (jealousy, envy, bitterness,....sins)?  We all would hope/desire to get the reading 000 which reflects a "pure" heart!  I told you, "Zer0 is g00d!" :)

The test: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."  Psalm 139:23-24

The result: "Who can say, 'I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin'?"  Proverbs 20:9

The solutions:

1. Pray and ask God to cleanse our heart.  "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."  Psalm 51:10, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1John1:9

2. Live our life according to God's Word.  "How can a young man keep his way pure?  By living according to Your Word."  Psalm 119:9

The benefits:

"Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?  Who may stand in His holy place?  He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.  He will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God his Savior."  Psalm 24:3-5

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Matthew 5:8

"The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."  1Timothy1:5

A Heart Exam

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, I think a heart exam seems appropriate :) (no...not a warning about fat & cholesterol piled up during Thanksgiving feasts).  What is our heart condition?  "A thankful heart is a happy heart." (a theme message in Madame Blueberry)  Do we have a thankful heart?  Truly thankful?  Not thankful only for material things...for worldly pleasures,  but truly thankful to God for everything and in all circumstances...  Do we daily thank God for who He is and what He has done?  Or do we only thank Him when He answers our prayers the way we want, or only when we have been blessed with something big?

"Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done." 1 Chronicles 16:8

"Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.  For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations." Psalm 100:4-5

"But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:57

"Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Colossians 2:6-7

"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."  Colossians 4:2

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1Thessalonians 5:16-18

"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire.'" Hebrews 12:28-29

"By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name." Hebrews 13:15

"Thankfulness is the soil in which joy thrives." ~Unknown

"When thou hast thanked thy God for every blessing sent,

What time will then remain for murmurs or lament?" ~Unknown

A thankful heart not only produces a happy heart but also gives us a right/pleasant attitude.  The attitude of awe, admiration, reverence, and gratitude for the Almighty God!  Other benefits include contentment, joy, peace, complaint-free atmosphere, no envy, no covetousness, desire/eagerness to give and share, etc., besides doing God's will.

I will never forget what a dear friend of mine said when I visited her and her daughter at the hospital after a car accident that took her son's life and left her daughter in critical condition.  I went there to encourage and comfort her but instead, her words touched me deeply.  She said, "I'm so thankful that the Lord gave me all those years to homeschool my kids.  I thank Him for all the time we spent together."  She retained a thankful heart throughout the whole ordeal.  Wow...isn't that a wonderful example of "giving thanks in all circumstances"?

A Simple Prayer of Thanksgiving by Helen Steiner Rice

I come not to ask, to plead or implore You,

I just come to tell You how much I adore You,

For to kneel in Your Presence makes me feel blest

For I know that You know all my needs best...

And it fills me with joy just to linger with You

As my soul You replenish and my heart You renew,

For prayer is much more than just asking for things--

It's the peace and contentment that quietness brings...

So thank You again for Your mercy and love

And for making me heir to YOUR KINGDOM ABOVE!

Father, We Thank Thee by Grenville Kleiser

Father, we thank Thee:

For peace within our favored land,

For plenty from Thy bounteous hand,

For means to give to those in need,

For grace to help in thought and deed,

For faith to walk, our hands in Thine,

For truth to know Thy law divine,

For strength to work with voice and pen,

For love to serve our fellow men,

For light to goal ahead to see,

For life to use alone for Thee,

Father, we thank Thee.

Kindness

Wouldn't this world be a lovely, warless place if everybody is kind to one another?  Wouldn't families be a lot happier if everyone in the family is always kind to one another?  Wouldn't the poor and needy no longer be in need if everybody shows kindness?  Wouldn't conflicts and arguments be quickly resolved (or not even take place) if people always use kind words?  A while back I wrote a (somewhat relevant)post titled, Taming the Tongue.

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:32

"Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else."  1 Thessalonians 5:15

"And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful." 2 Timothy 2:24

"He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God." Proverbs 14:31

"An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up."  Proverbs 12:25

Why..oh why is it hard for us to be kind sometimes?  Is it because...the other person is unkind/mean to us, it's inconvenient for us, we're too busy doing our own things, we don't get recognized/rewarded, we just don't feel like it (or we're in a bad mood), or perhaps people keep taking advantage of our kindness...?

Does God tell us to be kind only if/when 1. others are kind to us, 2. it's convenient for us, 3. we're not busy, 4. we get recognized/rewarded, 5. we feel like it, 6. people appreciate our kindness...?  NO!  He simply commanded us to be kind!  The Good Samaritan is a wonderful example of kindness.  Remember...Jesus said, "Go and do likewise."  I'm so pleased and touched when my kids secretly do their siblings' chores without being told to, save the last piece of dessert or treat for their sibling, let their siblings go first, complimenting their siblings, comforting their siblings when they're sad/upset, etc. (kindness doesn't always come easily for my kids, but they're learning and trying :))

Kindness has no price tags.  We shouldn't expect anything in return.  Even if nobody has noticed, God does :).  Doing what pleases God should be more than enough motivation for us.  We are to be kind to others, not because they deserve it, but because it's the right thing to do.  I have failed miserably time and time again.  I only have myself to blame.  Please pray for me.  Thanks!  I'm so glad and grateful that God is patient with me.  His kindness towards us is immeasurable, in spite of what we do or don't do.  I know I certainly don't deserve it.

In my opinion, kindness is...

C aring about others' feelings and considering others' needs and wants above our own

O ffering help, support, sympathy, prayers, encouragement, and friendship

O beying the Lord's commands: "Love your neighbor as yourself" and "Do to others what you would have them do to you"

L oving others in words and actions.  Love is patient, love is kind.

                                    Be kind...be cool! :)

"Speak kind words and you will hear kind echoes." Unknown

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." Mother Teresa

"Learn to say kind things--nobody ever resents them." Unknown

"Can you ever remember a time when you regretted having said a kind word?" Unknown

"Hatred and anger are powerless when met with kindness." Unknown

"Speak your kind words soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." Unknown

"I shall pass through this world but once.  Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now." Unknown

"Kindness is a language which the deaf man can hear and the blind man can read." Mark Twain

"One kind act will teach more love of God than a thousand sermons." Unknown

Kind hearts are the gardens,

Kind thoughts are the roots,

Kind words are the flowers,

Kind deeds are the fruits.

Take care of your garden

And keep out the weeds,

Fill it with sunshine

Kind words and kind deeds.

                                      ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

My prayer today: Lord, please create in my heart the unselfish kindness, that I may serve You and others joyfully...that I may be sunshine in the lives of others...that I may reflect Christ accurately...In Jesus' name, I pray...Amen.

Have we committed a crime?

"What is the greatest crime in the desert?  Finding water and keeping silent." Eastern proverb

"Jesus answered her (the Samaritan woman), 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.'....Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thrist.  Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'" John 4:10, 13-14

We (Christians) have found the living water, but...have we been keeping silent?  Have we committed the greatest crime in the spiritual desert?

                 You Forgot My Soul

You lived next door to me for years

We shared our dreams, our joys, and tears.

A friend to me you were indeed...

A friend who helped me when in need.

My faith in you was strong and sure

We had such trust as should endure.

No spats between us ever rose;

Our friends were like...and so our foes.

What sadness then, my friend, to find

That after all you weren't so kind.

The day my life on earth did end

I found you weren't a faithful friend.

For all those years we spent on earth

You never talked of second birth.

You never spoke of my lost soul

And of the Messiah Who'd make me whole.

I plead today from Hell's cruel fire

And tell you now my last desire.

You cannot do a thing for me...

No words today my bonds will free.

But do not err, my friend, again;

Do all you can for souls of men.

Plead with them now quite earnestly,

Lest they be cast in Hell with me.

                                                          ~Author Unknown

Are we truly loving our neighbors as ourselves?  Are we doing all we can to reach the lost...to help quench their thirst by leading them to the Living Water...to show them that Jesus offers lasting spiritual satisfaction?

"Save some, O Christian!  By all means, save some.  From yonder flames and outer darkness, and the weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, seek to save some!  Let this, as in the case of the apostles, be your great, ruling object in life, that by all means you might save some."  Charles Spurgeon  (Note form me: Only God can save! I think Mr. Spurgeon understood that and he just meant that Christians need to reach out to the lost in the hope that they might come to the Lord and be saved.)
