National Poetry Day

Today is National Poetry Day.  We have been studying poetry using an online course by Maggie Hogan called, "Young Scholar's Guide to Poetry."  It's been fun.  Here are a couple poems written by my daughter:-

Acrostic poem

Autumn is here

Under your feet...leaves are everywhere

Trees are covered with brilliant colors

Until all the leaves have fallen

Many leaves on the ground make a soft carpet

Now the trees are nothing but skeletons

Tribute to My Dad

Tribute to My Dad

I love my dad! I think he’s wonderful. Let me explain.

My dad loves the Lord and strives to do His will. He tells others about the Gospel. He has shared his faith with his coworkers and others. He also loves me, my mom, and my brothers unconditionally. He shows it in his words and actions. John 15:13 says, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Dad would die for us.

My dad truly cares for us and about us. Not only does he care for us physically but spiritually as well. He does his best to answer our questions about the Bible and God, etc. He is also not afraid to admit when he doesn’t know something. He’s humble. He teaches us to always trust in God.

I enjoy spending time with my dad. He plays sports with us and teaches us how to play better. He’s our personal coach. :) He has also taught me piano. My dad has a great ear for music. One of my favorite things to do is watching movies alone with my dad.

My dad has a great sense of humor! My whole family loves to joke around. Sometimes it can be so funny just talking together about something.

My dad protects us. He always wants to keep us safe. Again, not only physically but also spiritually. He wants to make sure we don’t believe false philosophies or false teachings. He stresses the importance of going to God’s Word to find the truth. He has memorized quite a bit of Scripture and encourages me to do the same.

My dad is diligent in his work. Not only does he work hard outside of the home, he also works hard at home. He does yard work and takes care of the house’s maintenance. Last year, he put shelves on two of the playroom/schoolroom walls. Now we have built-in bookshelves from the floor to the ceiling. He’s good at fixing things and improvising. For example, how many dads can kill bugs with a rubber band? By the way, it’s funny to watch!

My dad is there to help and teach me. From helping me with math to helping me deal with my fears, my dad is there to answer my questions. He also knows a lot more about the computer than I do and has helped me many times with problems that I’ve run into.

My dad is a good steward of the resources God has given him. He has taught me the importance of not living for the pleasures of this life but of making an impact for eternity. (What I mean by that is reaching the unreached with the Gospel and saving people’s souls.) He gives generously to missions and to the poor.

My dad is completely honest and trustworthy. He never lies so we know we can always trust him with everything. He has always taught us to be truthful.

Thanks, Dad, for all you do and for loving me no matter what!

Choose LIFE!

My 13 year old daughter wrote the following speech ("Choose Life") for her final speech presentation in our homeschool co-op.  Below the speech, you will find my daughter's email that she sends to people.  This is her 8th year that she has been participating in Steps for Life.  We are so proud of her for standing up for what she believes in and for defending the defenseless.  If you're interested in giving/making pledges to save lives, please visit my daughter's website or contact her/me directly at serving_theKingofkings@yahoo.com.

                                            CHOOSE LIFE

Psalm 139: 13-16 says, "For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb.  I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place.  When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body.  All the days ordained for me were written in Your Book before one of them came to be."

God has plans and purposes for everyone since a person is in his or her mother's womb.  A baby is already alive and in the process of becoming who God wants him or her to be.  Each baby is a person created by God in His image.

How can this country allow evil or misguided people to destroy innocent babies?  People should praise God for each new life He creates instead of killing them.  People should never interfere with God's plan for each person's life.  Nobody should be allowed to be "pro choice" which means they support the right to choose to kill babies by way of abortion if they feel like it.  It is not even appropriate that they call themselves "pro choice" because there is no choice for the babies whatsoever!  The babies do not choose to die!  Abortion should be illegal because it is clearly murder.

Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRC) is a Christian, non-profit organization that offers help and hope to women and teens facing unplanned pregnancy.  By helping them meet their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs, PRC enables them to choose life.  Everybody whether young or old should stand up against abortion anyway he or she can!  Steps for Life, PRC's 2.5 mile walkathon fund-raising event, is a great example of how people can help save the lives of innocent babies and encourage one another to choose life.  Let's all choose LIFE!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
My name is Alyssa.  I am an 8th grade homeschooler.  I am participating in Steps for Life, a fund-raising event for Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRC) again this year. This year if you sponsor a walker for at least $150 by May 1, 2007, you will receive a free Steps for Life sweatshirt. I have my own website where you can visit and make pledges online. The address is http://stepsforlife.ewalk.org/LifeofFaith.

The Pregnancy Resource Centers of Greater Portland help women and teens who face unplanned pregnancy.  They help meet their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs, enabling them to choose life.  They have six centers throughout the Portland area, and have ministered to over 110,000 women and teens since 1984.  They provide free services such as counseling, ultrasound, adoption info., maternity & baby clothes, parenting classes, spiritual encouragement, etc.

Please join me in saving the innocent lives of unborn babies by making pledges.  You don't need to pay right now. You can choose to be billed later.  Any amount would greatly be appreciated!  If you do not want to make pledges online, you can still make pledges by emailing me your name, address, and the amount you would like to give.  Donations to PRC are tax-deductible.  For more info. about Steps for Life, please visit http://www.prc-events.org/

Sincerely,
Alyssa

P.S. Thanks so much to all of last year's sponsors! I was able to raise over $1,000. I hope you will join me again this year in saving precious, innocent lives. God bless!

I May Not Be...

I may not be a famous baseball player
I may not be an important mayor
I may not be a famous actress on a stage
I may not get a really high wage
But if I have saved anybody from going to hell
Then, my life has been spent well.
