I'm moving!

Posted in Projects

While this has been a wonderful "starter home", it is time for me to spread my wings and enter a new realm of blogosphere.  I love the "gadgets" that the "new fangled homes" have and since I am not specifically homeschool oriented in my blogging, I think it might be time to move along.

I'm keeping Blogelle because I really want to expand that but my memories blog and my family blog are joining this one on wordpress.com

Visit me!  And to celebrate this exciting move, I'm holding a contest.  The prize is a 20 dollar gift certificate!  Come name my book!

Update on the Chair Front...

Posted in Projects

Well here I sit.  Another week goes by and I sit.  I sit.... and I sit.

However, since coming to a realization that life in a chair doesn't have to be the epitome of boredom or completely free from accomplishment, I have managed to add more meaningful activity to my days.

Since that day I have...

  • Edited two chapters in "Cinders"
  • Edited a photo shoot.
  • Organized about 300 pictures
  • Started consistent daily work on Ethan's reading lessons
  • Started a Christmas shopping list
  • Started a Blog for my childhood memories.
  • Switched out the tablecloth for something "Fallish"
  • Researched alternate moderator gifts.
  • Read four books
  • Crocheted 3 more rows on afghan
  • Planned science blitz.
  • Planned quick Thanksgiving blitz to start in November. (How did I forget that the little kids haven't done one?)
  • Planned two new ooks.

Today I'm off to update my writing website and do some tote sorting/decluttering.   Not too shabby....

Of Porches and Blogs

Posted in Projects

Everyone who reads this blog eventually asks if that porch you see at the top of the page is MY porch.  My answer is always "not yet".

I searched everywhere for something that would make people feel like they were welcome to just come 'sit a spell' while we 'chat' and drink some lemonade or iced tea.  When I saw that picture two things happened.  First, I found my picture.  It was PERFECT.  I just loved it.  My blog had that welcoming 'sit on the porch, watch the world go by while we solve it's problems' feel.  All-American.  I still smile everytime I see it.

The second thing that happened requires a little bit of background so I'll tell a story.

Once upon a time, an engaged couple was looking for the perfect nest to call home.  They saw new townhomes on "Lilac Square" that tempted them.   The homes were bright and new, lilacs just happened to be the girl's favorite flower...  but the yards were tiny and two townhomes were conjoined at a time.  This meant only a thin wall of privacy protection was in place.

They looked high and low, hither and thither.  Finally, they looked at a house on a busy street that they'd previously rejected due to curbside lack of appeal and location.  (that street is BUSY!)  The house, from the outside, looked like Santa's Reindeer lost their pea soup all over the house one Christmas!  The pea green stucco was trimmed in barn red with a white foam roof.  No, this is not a joke.

But once the couple stepped inside the house, they knew.  This was their house.  She fell in love with the wall paper, the hardwood floors, and the large rooms.  He fell in love with the back yard... the HUGE back yard.  They both hated the outside.  A saltine box covered with pea soup.  No life, no shape, BORING.

They quickly added siding to their house.  It was a definite improvement.  Really.  But unfortunately it also gave the appearance of a 1970's mobile home.

Enter, my blog picture.  The second thing I realized when I saw that picture was that this could be MY HOUSE!!!  I can do that to my house.  I can build that porch, I can have the 'shape' and I'll love it.

Yesterday, phase one of the new house was implemented.  My son-in-law, David, put my new door in for Kevin for his birthday.  Kevin now has one less project to worry about and I have my new door up and looking beautiful.  Kevin added locks and such last night.  I am SOOOOOO excited.  Two windows and that room is du-double-n- done!

I'm considernig paint and I have new fabric for covering couches and making cushions and such.  It's going to be so pretty!  I get new trim around the new doors and windows and everything.  After that, we do the windows in my room... redo the trim and such there... and VOILA!  I can put new siding (long discouraging story but all siding must be replaced) on the front of the house and start building my PORCH!  WAHOOTY.

Off to find a recliner cover.  I can't wait.  :)

Wedding Dress Musings

Dress Progress...

We are having a delightful time creating the dress of Challice's dreams.  We've tried to incorporate so much into this dress, both literally and symbolically.  For years to come, she will look at the pictures and remember everything that made her special day so very special in the first place.

First, we are using what we have... and supplementing with the very least expensive things we can find while maintaining the looks she does want.  This is how most of her life is likely to be.  Making do, finding the best sales and carefully budgeting for every expenditure.  This dress kind of personifies her future life, and shows how beautiful the results can truly be.

We started with a piece of shantung styled satin that I had.  I purchased it for a special order of my Anastasia dress but never received payment.  Technically, the fabric was free.  It wasn't purchased for this dress and the original Anastasia dress certainly covered the expense of the extra fabric.

We found, on the dollar table at Wal-mart, a lovely striped chiffon.  The quality was incredible.  There were occasional spots but I could tell they would be easily cut around and if necessary, washed.  I took a large piece of this fabric and began embroidering with the specialty stitches on my sewing machine.  This is the first time I've deliberately designed something to use those features!  The white stripes were carefully stitched with ivory rayon thread and the result was astounding!

Laces came next.  My heart wanted to go purchase tatted laces and expensive Venice laces.  I love the richness of 'authentic'  lace but that would kind of defeat the subtle design of the gown.  Scrounging around I found white and ivory laces, and left over sheer ribbon.  I went to work.  Using white Venice styled cotton insertion lace with roses,  I wove ivory sheer ribbon through it and chose to use that at the waistband and cuffs.

I found rayon Venice styled laces in my stash.  One piece, that I used around the overskirt and sleeve flounces, was left over from a large batch of lace purchased from a manufacturer that changed their product line.  I'd more than made my money from what I purchased.  The sleeves were a lesson in patience and frugality.  One piece has two carefully mended sections in order to have enough to do the sleeves.  We literally found two SMALL pieces that we had to add to each end of one larger piece to make enough to work!

The other Venice styled lace is a thicker richer lace.  I bought it when I thought I'd be starting a dress for her, and then decided not to use it.  How fitting that I'd add it in anyway, using up what had been planned in order not to waste it.  This lace MAKES the dress.  It is what you see around the neckline and around the satin shantung underskirt.

Challice's personal style is reflected in the pattern she chose.  She wanted a "Molly" dress.  Something that Molly Gibson from Wives and Daughter's might wear.  We bought the Sensibility pattern for the Romantic Era and went to town.

Somehow, this dress seems to span several periods.  There is something almost medieval or renaissance about the dress though it wasn't intended to be.  There is the bodice style and length of the Romantic era with the sleeves that are almost Victorian in their style.  The embroidery on the bodice and the laces make me think of Ante-bellum and Edwardian.

The end result?  We have a dress that looks like a family heirloom... but no one could possibly guess how old by the styling.  I like that.

I'm loving the creation of this dress... but it is almost finished.  A few pearl buttons, the other sleeve, and hand sewing down the lining will complete my first family wedding dress.  It's a special time in our lives, and we intend to enjoy it to the fullest!

Making Christmas Cards

Posted in Projects

This year I decided to be a 'good mom' and let my children make our Christmas cards. (and thereby forcing myself to mail them after all of their hard work!)

We had a blast!

"Ingredients"

White Card Stock

"Tearable paper" (onion skin stuff from your scrapbooking aisle)

Markers

Stickers

Die cuts

Scissors

Rubber Stamps

Notion scraps

Glue and Gluesticks

Glitter pens...

The options are limitless I assure you!

Cut the paper in half, and fold those in half again.  Let the kids 'have at it'.  They can do whatever they want with one outside part but cannot touch the other 'sides'.  Designate yourself or one child for the official 'stamper'.  Put a rubber stamped message on the inside.

I intend to mail with a 'newsy'letter written like a newspaper and prayerfully pictures of the dahlinks.

Isn't it mahvelous???  (picture removed) To those who have seen pictures of our tree in our living room... the tree stands where this piano was!  I made an evil bargain with our piano tuner!  He wanted to do some repair work on the keys and I told him I'd go for it only if he'd move the piano for the month of December and not bring it back until January.  He hadn't planned on moving the piano to do the work but I guess he wanted the work badly enough because he arrived the Monday before Thanksgiving and drove off with it.  WAHOO!  First year in AGES that we haven't had to close off our Living room Closet for our tree.  :D

My dress and reason for absense...

Posted in Projects

Well, I took last week off.  The passing of little Becca made keeping this up just a wee bit hard.  I figured this week wasn't going anywhere so I could begin again.

My dress got diverted to a different one so I will be making yet another dress!

About Me

Where I make people scratch their heads with my bizarre and slightly scary ability to write but not publish novels and childrens fantasy, sew boutique clothing but not clean up my mess, ineffectively homeschool 9 children and rattle off obscure songs faster than the speed of sound - all at the same time. With no kitchen cabinets... but finally an OVEN!!!. Ain't it the life?
