Preparations for another person to teach in my recovery period

6:22 AM, Thursday, December 18, 2008 .. Posted in Homeschool .. 0 comments .. Link
Well, yesterday was actually a productive day dispite just sitting in my recliner.  I was able to print out a lesson plan for Olivia's schooling and plug in her information so that if I do have someone come in to teach them when we commence back to school on January 5, 2009 they will have a detailed list of what I do with her.  As for Nathan I just wrote it out in letter form as to what he does on the computer with SOS.  I also put in their extra curricular activities like swimming and keepers/contenders.  I feel more comfortable now that I know they will be well cared for and whom every it is that comes in can just follow the lesson plan.

First week of 06/07 school year nearly over up for

Well, it's Thursday Aug 31 and we are almost finished with our first week of school  I can't believe we have been HSing  for over 2 years now.  I am so excited about this year.  We are working on SL Core 2 (with some Core K for Livi) History for both Nathan and Olivia but break them up and do Core K for Olivia in LA and Science while Nathan continues with Core 2 and then does Science on the computer with SOS 4.

History and Geography are going great, we are learning the oceans and continents and both the kids have pretty much learned them all after 3 days.  We sing a song about them and then work on the markable map together.  We have ready about Gladys Alyward this week and today we will start reading about William and Catherine Booth, from the "Hero Tales" book.

Math is going well too.  We are using Saxon Math 1 & 3.  We all sit at the table and work together.  We are in the review section right now so that they can work on last years skills before moving on to new skills.  I really like the say Saxon works.  The don't move to fast.

Other than that we are having loads of fun.  Today is park day so we will work really hard until noon to get it all done so we can go play with the other HS kids.

Blessings for a new school year to all,
Gretchen

A day of grace

The sun is shining here today and DH is home for the holiday.  I am blessed because he worked with Nathan on his Saxon 2 Math and finally  (after 2 years) go a taste of what I do each day for HSing the kids.  I worked with Olivia on all her letters/numbers.  I am in my skirt and am wearing my apron.  I feel so feminine.

School has been such a blessing today and the warmth of the sun on my legs while reading to the kids by the back sliding glass door is so nice.

Good books

1:58 PM, Tuesday, January 24, 2006 .. Posted in Homeschool .. 0 comments .. Link

We are using this book to teach Nathan LA.  Today we started ch. 1 and he is learnging about the subject and predicate of a sentence.  He is really grasping the whole concept of this.  We finished up with page 5 today.  Tomorrow he will learn about Declarative & Interrogative sentences.

Yesterday we finished reading Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Today we finished reading Heidi ~ Child of the Mountains (1954).

And started reading Mountain Born by Elizabeth Yates.

Nathan started reading Fun with Dick and Jane independently.  Even though he is reading at a 4th grade level he still needs to read repitition stories.

Snow and Math

1:10 PM, Thursday, January 19, 2006 .. Posted in Homeschool .. 0 comments .. Link

Its snowing here today in the Snowy Range Mountians and we are nice and warm.  We have learned in Saxon 2 math about how to read a thermometer within 10*.  It is 30* here.  Nathan is going to be graphing the temperature for the rest of the month.  He is also working hard on double plus one facts and story problems.  I really like the layout of Saxon Math.  I have mapped out the rest of the school year and it looks like our last day will be June 27th if we continue on this track.  I know that is rather late but with the illnesses in the last 3 weeks it has put our schedule back a few weeks too.  I am ok with that but Nathan isn't to enthused.

Back to school after Christmas and illnesses

Well, I am happy to say that we are finally back to school.  We worked on Saxon 2 math with Nathan and he really is enjoying the picture sentences with some, some more and some, some went away.  We finished 2 lessons today.  He is now working on addition flashcards.

Steve took today off so we can work on Allies room.

He is nearly finished with his 9 patch

9:12 PM, Friday, January 6, 2006 .. Posted in Homeschool .. 1 comments .. Link

Nathan has been working really hard on his 9 patch project.  He finished the top and ironed it all before final sewing of the rows.  We have the back of the pillow cut out and pinned to the top. He is already to sew it tomorrow and fill it and then close it up. I will have a picture of the finished project then.  As you can see from the previous picture of the first row it is quit a wild pattern.  The backing is black/white check to look like a racing flag.  I can't wait to show it off for him.
