Mar. 14, 2006 - I survived surgery...I think...
My hysterectomy was successful on Friday. Waking up in the recovery room, my first thought was "I'm alive", my second thought was "Aaaaawwwggh! everything hurts and I'm going to throw up!" They got that under control (morphine and that anti-nasuea medicine are wonderful), and then took me to my room. Here they actually expected me to move, by myself, from the gurney to they bed. I will never be able to figure that out. Every movement made my gut feel like it was ripping open. If they had just let Leny in the room, he could have moved me.
After that every thing was a bit of a blur. Pain and discomfort and jello.
On Sat, after feeding the scrapbooking ladies breakfast, sending the kids off to their activities, Leny came in and took care of me for the day. It was amazing how he could see just what to do when the nurses couldn't. (They were all very nice, he was just MUCH nicer!) He immediately saw how to make my bed more comfy, how to support me when I got up, how to arrange my table so I could actually reach things. Even though I just slept most of the time, it was so nice to have him there.
Several other people stopped by. I wasn't really up to visitors, but it was still nice they came.
They took my catheder out but it became quite obvious my bladder wasn't functioning. At one point my bladder had 800 ccs in it, which is 4 times the normal amount. Yadda yadda yadda...but modern medicine is completely amazing.
So they released me on Monday, and by Monday night I really wished they hadn't. It is amazing how your whole focus is reduced to the functions of your bladder and bowels. We were very close to returning to the hospital for the ridiculous reason of needing a catheder, when Leny tried the old potty training trick of running the shower, and it actually worked.
Now it is Tuesday, and I am learning how to function from my command station; the bed. The kids think it is spring break, and I am having a hard time convincing them that is not actually true. I have been im-ing the kids "Get off runescape", "get off runescape"... but I don't think it is working too well. We definately will be having a chat with the principal this evening. After my nap I'll read to them.

Happy to hear your operation went well. Don't blow it now 8-)! Follow your doctor's orders to the letter. Do not do a single thing you shouldn't be doing and I mean NOTHING!!! If you are a good girl your recup time will go quickly and smoothly, without a hitch, and you'll be back on your feet feeling better than you ever have before you know it.
Grandest of days,
Anna
