Ready set go!

Here we go off and running to a new year!

Are you ready?

I hope that we are!

I have a junior and a 3rd grader this year.

My Junior is studying to pass her CLEP exams and get college and highschool credit at the same time!

YEAH!!!

We hope to get at least the Associates Degree finished this way.

I actually LOVE hands on teaching with Abeka with my 7 year old. It is so wonderful when you see things click.

This year however, we are going to use some of the switched on schoolhouse, so that I am not tied to the table for 8 + hours a day. I want to enjoy Homeschooling!!! and I want me kids to enjoy it as well.

Academic excellence is also very high on the priority, as we want the children to have a prosperous future.

Today we started our sprouts after soaking over night , for our ezekiel Bread.

We will make it later in the week.

I will let you know how successful it is.

We are trying something new with our yeast free sour dough starter.

Wish us luck!

Eastern Blue Birds

In the back yard we have a Purple Martin Box.

We have had no luck at all with Purple Martins.

We have had  Eastern Bluebirds. We had a nest built , lovely little eggs, hatchlings and then an empty nest. Much to our surprise this happened 2 more times! What a Very Pleasant Surprise for us to have these nests . Next year I hope that we also get the Purple Martins.

Here is one of the nests.

Here is more information about the birds.

Science in everyday Life

I find it amusing, that as an adult daily I use those skills which I saw little use for as a child and even teen. Science, especially Biology and Chemistry really were not my "thing"!

Yet daily I use the Science of Biology, and even more so chemistry in life.

We grow organic Gradens and have free range organically nurtured and supplemented chickens.

My Business is Soap Making and Spa Bath and Body and Natural Care Products, I even make them for our numerous Pets.

My father bless his heart, says that I am not a "real Farmer" as the animals (including chickens) should not all have names! :o)

Back to my point everyday for every batch of soap that I make and every lotion that I create I use Chemistry!!

Who would have know that I would actually LOVE chemistry!!!

We use it in our garden , we use it in our own adventure toward better Health, as we steer away from medicine and follow what Hippocrates himself said.

"Let food be your medicine and Medicine be your food"  I would love to see Dr's put that one into practice!!

Hippocrates in case you did not know, is the Father of Medicine.

His ideas of medicine at least were sound.

Anyway encourage your children to enjoy Science!

My 6 Yo is reading the vegetable Gardeners Bible for her science and she is LOVING it!

We started out with 2nd greade Science, which talked about seeds and plants and planning a garden, so we got busy on that.

I asked her if she wanted to learn more about how to make her garden healthier and keep the bugs out of it.,and she answered with a resounding "YES"!

So she  will be working her way through composting , as well as uinderstanding that healthy plants do not attract bugs as frequently. How to use "good bugs' to benefit the garden. As wel las the fact that all plant health starts in the soil. SO she will be learning alot of concepts beyond a normal 6 yo curriculum.

She already has the knowledge of the importance of PH levels, not only for the garden but for our lives, and our own bodies.

I wish I would have grasped that at 6!!

Here are some pictures of what we have done this year in and out of the garden.

ENJOY!!
We certaily are!

Birmingham ZOO - Alabama

Taken from the official website of the Birmingham Zoo

Animals

At any given time, about 800 animals of more than 200 species make their homes at the Birmingham Zoo, including 80 species of birds, 80 of reptiles, and 60 mammals. For a current list of all species in our collection, see our Animal List.

Animals are cared for daily by a dedicated staff of curators, zoological managers and keepers at the Birmingham Zoo. These professionals provide well maintained environments that reflect their natural habitats. They also work hard "enriching" animals' lives to make life more interesting and less predictable. Keepers may place food inside "puzzles" for animals, spread an unusual scent in a habitat, or train animals in new behavior as a form of enrichment.

Our Animal Nutrition Center prepares balanced diets for animals in the collection and our Animal Health Center provides expert veterinary care.

In accordance with American Zoo and Aquarium Association Species Survival Plans, animals may be sent to and from other zoos to manage the genetic viability of designated captive animal populations.

All photographs on BirminghamZoo.com are of animals in their habitats at the Birming

A New Year

Here we go off to a New Year ...

I have 2 left home schooling here and 5 still at home.

We are doing primary grades and High School this year.

I expect it to be alot of fun and alot of work.

We have no official style,I like to be learning outdoors as much as possible, but we also use alot of traditional as well as non-traditonal methods.

I want my kids to get the very best education, and enjoy it!!

I like to have my lesson plans laid out for the year when we start.

This gives us a good foundation.

We can deviate if we want or need to , but we have the basis of what we need to learn for they year and what we need to cover in the books.

It makes it easier to get work done and add to or take from the books what we need to get done.

It also makes life less hectic!

We are too busy for chaos! Right Moms! :o)

We have several projects already started and will post these projects as we complete them so you can see them from start to finish.

I hope everyoone has a great year!
Blessings!

Sharie
