Homeschooling in the Dark

We keep marching along into the darker days of the fall, which means that mom gets more and more tired, and less and less patient. I don't plan to talk much about it, but I suffer from seasonal depression, and this year it is pretty bad. (Which is why my posts are becoming more sparse -- I'm pretty sure that reading about life as a depressed person is only slightly less unpleasant than actually living that life, so I spare you.) Anyway, the bright spot is that today I just needed to buck the routine and do something different, so we played a very fun game instead.
Great States was great fun -- Violet actually liked it better than the Carmen Sandiego computer game she had tried earlier! We have been pretty lax with American geography (social studies right now is the medieval Franks of Gaul), which is pretty useful to know when you live in America, so I'm glad she likes it. Now I need a fun math facts game!

That is a great game. She could even play it with her younger sister!
Ami selected this game from a toy store when she was almost 4. We have even given it as a gift. We have the version for older children. She loved it and still plays but dad or I almost never win. What originally attracted her to it were the birds for each state. She is a longtime bird watcher.
I was in a game shop earlier tonight looking at various versions of train games that would catch Ami's eye but prices were a little out of line >40 dollars for a board game.

Some how, I didn't see the top of your post. I am so sorry you are not feeling well. I use to suffer with that for about 2 months of the winter when I lived in the fog & wet of the Bay Area. It was horrid. When I had Ami I started to spend most of my winters where we are now. On one of our trips we took the plunge and bought a home here. My husband commuted for at least a year to our former place of residence. I feel bad telling you this, I don't have this issue anymore.
Have you tried one of those lamps that wake you by imitating sun? B vitamins helped me some but the best cure was cheery sunlight.

I'm sorry to hear about your depression. I have a friend who suffers from SAD and it is very hard for her. I myself have my dark moments, so I can really empathise. I'm glad you're finding joy at times, and I hope your depression passes soon. I will be thinking of you and sending you little rays of southern sunlight and happiness ... here come some now ... :-)
