My Seven Habits -- in theory

Posted in Just sayin

Maureen of TrinityPrepSchool is at it again -- asking her fellow HSB bloggers to actually think about what they're doing!

In the spirit of cooperation, if not edification, I too will consider the 7 Habits of Highly Effective (Homeschool) Bloggers, even if I don't practice them as often as I should.

1. Imagine an audience. For me, I often think of the grandparents who will be reading the blog trying to find out what our family is up to these days. I also think of non-homeschooling friends who might stop by. I hope the blog will be interesting and not too obnoxious to all of these folks.

2. Don't think too much about your readers. If you worry too much that Grandma Bess or friend Joe will freak out or disagree, then you'll get awfully boring.

3. Use pictures!

4. Use names -- but not real names. I've enjoyed getting to know the family of HSB blogger Susannah. She has great nicknames for her kids so that they are real people, but they still have some privacy and security on the Web.

5. Link to interesting articles, products, and people. For example, here is a nice blog about homeschooling a profoundly gifted child.

6. Test your links!

7. Review your spelling and grammar, but don't obsess over it. (And this from a former composition teacher!) Blogs need to be readable, and there's no need to go out of your way to look foolish, but if every post needs 15 minutes of editing, you'll never actually get them online.

BTW, you should also read the TrinityPrepSchool posts on Mortimer Adler's How to Read a Book.
