Next Year Plans, Already

Posted in Home Schooling

For some reason, school has seemed effortless this year.  Hey!...I’ll take it!  We’re just cruising along past the midpoint and it’s actually been quite enjoyable.  The girls don’t gripe about school, and they are learning so much!  Of course, this causes me to second-guess the way I’m doing things.  Are we doing enough?  Should I be assigning more work for the girls?  I have this overwelming tendency to compare what we do at our school with what other kids are doing in their school.  I sure wish I could squash that mentality!

This year, Rachel and Sarah are doing Math, Language Arts, Literature, History, and Science.  Our attempt to do two electives fell through, so we are sticking to the core subjects this year.  I’m not so concerned about Sarah since she’s only 4th grade, but I wonder if Rachel should do more since she’s 8th.

I’ve already started planning for next year.  As usual, I’m changing things up a bit.  The girls will be enrolled in our homeschool group’s “Academy” next year (Thursdays only), so that will include many other electives and science lab.  It is so cool, and I’m looking forward to it.  Here is what I plan for the girls to tackle next year:

Rachel:  At Academy: 9th grade Writing, 9th grade Speech, Physical Science lab, Photography orArt, and American Sign Language.  At home, we’ll cover Physical Science lecture, History/Lit (Ancient History), Algebra, and Grammar.  This is quite a load for Rachel, but I think she’ll do fine.  I’ve already warned her that high school means a more stringent workload.

Sarah:  At Academy: Art, ASL, Writing, Science, and History.  At home, we’ll do Physics experiments once a week, History/Lit (Geography), Epsilon/Zeta (Math), Spelling, and Grammar.  This sounds like a lot, but they are all given in small portions.  Sarah will enjoy all these studies.

I’ve already ordered the science experiment book for Sarah from my friend/Usborne rep.  I can’t wait to look through.  Everything else will be purchased later.  Here’s hoping next year will go as smoothly as this year is shaping up to be.  J

Good luck! Do you have to have them tested? If you do and they do well on the tests, I wouldn't worry so much. : )
