Lesson From My Roofers

Posted in Parenting and Family

Yay!  We’re getting a new roof this week.  It’s long overdue, but with all the redtape of home insurance, it’s just now happening.  The roofers are almost finished, and I’m amazed at the amount of work they accomplish in only a few hours.  It’s looking fantastic.  Now, maybe we can repair the spots in the ceiling from the torrential rain we had in early October.  Our insurance company has been great, despite the fact that we just moved here in July and the damage was very likely pre-policy.  We’ve been so blessed.

On a more regretful note, I feel guilty for experiencing feelings of sorrow for the men working on our roof.  It's been quite cold, and they've work so hard... and for very long hours…sometimes in the dark.  At first, I felt inclined to use their toil as an example to the children of the value of a good education.  Then, I thought more carefully about it.  I recognized their incomparable work ethic… their love for what they do… their dedication to getting the job done with superior quality.  I saw in me a manner of aristocracy that I’m so glad God revealed to me before I opened my mouth.  Do you have any idea how RARE it is to find workers such as this?  It speaks volumes of their character.  Why would I think that their work was beneath anyone?  Instead, I complimented the way the guys worked.  We prayed for their safety each morning.  Sarah watches them and marvels at the techniques they use.  Naturally, I pray that our children will pursue anything they’re called to do for the Lord.  I know that a high level of education may be required – depending on their calling - but, if for some reason, the Lord calls them to perform manual labor, then so be it.  There’s much honor in it.  See how the Lord touched my heart this week through hard-working souls who never even spoke a word to me.  Now, that’s really something…

Our world needs people in ALL walks of life. So few people, in this day and age, seem to take pride in what they do, or even care if they do their job well or not. A job well done is worth its weight in gold, imho.

We had ours put on last August and it was blazing hot. I really felt sorry for them being up there. They do work fast and hard!

I'm always tempted to give the education speech when i see a "sign holder" ya know like in front of Little Ceasars.
