Mid-Year Musings

Posted in Home Schooling

It’s that time of year when I feel that I’m nearing the top of the hill, on my way to that marvelous downward slope of the school year.  I don’t know why I make it sound so wonderful, because, in truth, I’m always eager to plan for the next year!  So, yes, I’m already planning for next year.  It seems that I insist on trying new things each year… *LOL*… even if things are going well now.  Well, here goes:

Rachel:

Science – Same publisher, new topic (Apologia Biological Science).  I think she’ll really enjoy biology.

Math – We’ll wrap up MUS Algebra I and begin MUS Geometry.  We’re wrapping up Pre-Alg now, and Alg I is on its way.  I expect much of it to be material she’s already familiar with – at first.  She may finish this summer.

Social Studies –  We inherited a Bob Jones U.S. Government set from a friend.  I plan to do only half a year though.  The other half will likely be a U.S. or World Geography course.

English II – We’re gonna hit creative writing hard-and-heavy next year.  This year has seen more focus on literature, grammar, and some writing; but next year will be lots of writing and reading.

Keyboarding – The girl has GOT to learn to type by touch.  It’s a sad sight…really.

Theatre – The local theatre has classes.  I don’t know the cost yet, but it’s offered year-round.  Rachel is interested in trying it out.  I hope she enjoys it.

P.E. – Like it or not, Rachel has to get up and get moving.  Maybe we’ll take more walks, or I’ll have her do aerobics with me (which she HATES).  I’ve left this up to her, and she’s no help at all.  K

Sarah:

Science – This is a big question mark for me.  I love the elementary Apologia courses, but I also like the Singapore Science currics for 6th grade.  I’ll have to think more about this between now and then.

Math – MUS Zeta (percents, decimals, etc.).  This will be her last “core” level before heading to Pre-Algebra.  (So hard to believe.)

History and Literature – Beautiful Feet’s History of the Horse.  Sarah’s been asking to do this for a while.  It should be interesting to her, although I don’t think I’ll enjoy it much. J  I do love the BF concept of using living books to teach history.

Grammar – Winston Grammar comes highly recommended by a good HS friend of mine.  I’m looking forward to using it.  Sarah knows very little about grammar.  Hopefully, this will stimulate an interest in writing by middle school.

Spelling – maybe.  Sarah loves spelling, but I personally think spelling is covered well enough through living books.  I’m seriously thinking of dropping it next year.

P.E. – Tennis again.  Next year, she’ll be playing in a junior league.  Plus, the girl loves to play.  P.E. comes natural to her.

Art – I want to enroll her in some kind of art/craft lessons next year.  She loves it, and I know there are many available at Michaels and Hobby Lobby that are much more reasonable than private lessons.  Too bad I’m no good at arts and crafts.

So, there you go.  Lots of plans.  We’ll see how much changes by next fall… then after that.  J

Hi,

I like your new avatar!

I don't even want to think about next year's curriculum until about April, but i am changing Cale's Lang. Arts in January so i guess i am thinking curr.

It looks like you have a pretty good plan.
What about Camille? Do you do anything "formal" with her?
I'm not doing much with my littles right now.
