Blessed are they that mourn…

Posted in My Christian Walk

This was the topic for today's sermon.  Before today, whenever I heard this beatitude, I only thought of grieving (as in losing a loved one).  However, it was presented in a totally different way today by our interim minister, Jim.

Mourning is healthy.  It's when we are broken and our eyes are open to see something for what it truly is.  It's when we fall to our knees in humble repentance before the Lord.  Jim emphasized the difference in moaning and mourning.  We all moan from time to time – complaining and groaning about the tasks of life.  Moaning is not blessed, but mourning is.  So, what are some things we should mourn?   In my opinion, the top two are the sins of the world and our personal sins.  We should not be so conformed to the world that we don't even recognize the dire condition of the world.  It's so much easier to turn off the news, cover our eyes, and pretend that the evil of this world does not exist.  It's much more comfortable to overlook our wrongdoing by convincing ourselves "I'm not so bad after all – not compared to most".  We go day by day, in an endless cycle of apathy… blending in with the world… becoming more and more blind to how far off course we really have become.  To condemn sinful acts would be considered "judgmental"… "politically-incorrect"… "pretentious"… so we choose to do nothing.

Christians, we need to be truthful with ourselves, with God, with our kids, and with our society.  We need to feel grief for all that's really wrong in this world.  We need to repent of our own wrongdoing and take all this to the Lord with a sorrowful heart – asking Him to guide our hearts and our actions, then listening for His answer with the courage to obey.  This lesson only validated my beliefs as a home schooler.  We tend to be more aware of the true state of society.  It just amazes me the number of people... Christians even... who bury their heads in the sand and claim to see the world through rose-colored glasses.  It was somewhat refreshing to hear someone proclaim to a stunned, silent audience of believers what I've mourned for so long.

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." – Matthew 5:4

"the true state of society"

It's only been in the last couple of years that the Lord has really opened my eyes to where our country is and where it's going. Often times during history lessons I'll catch myself wondering what future generations will have to say about our time in history, and that thought saddens me. I'm afraid all they'll see is the greed, gluttony, lust, and all around immorality of our time. I'm afraid that they'll focus on the parks and stadiums that are no longer named for people who did great things for society but are named for large companies who want great advertising. Hmmm...I better stop there, I feel a soapbox getting dusted off, lol!
