The Simple Life

• Apr. 7, 2008 - S.O.S.

...nope...I don't need immediate life saving aid...I simply have a curriculum question.

Has anyone out there had any experience with Alpha Omega's Switched On Schoolhouse????

I'm flip flopping between Math LifePac and Math SOS for my daughter...an upcoming "6th grader".

Any comments would be oh so helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a pleasant note...this has been a wonderful homeschooling year for us.  I kept things pretty stress free.  We relaxed our learning, tried different schedules and have tweaked our independent and multi-age learning times.  Basically the children work on Reading, Writing and Math for their individual levels in the morning, then in the afternoon we work on Science and/or History together.  It's is amazing to watch my children learn together and work as a team.  My four year old knows more about the Solar System and the Heart than I ever did even as an adult!!!!  I think one of my top ten reasons for loving  homeschooling would be that I get to re-learn (or learn for the first time) many things I had forgotten (or just never knew).

We have about 30 days to go before our official 2007-2008 school year will come to a close.  We'll take June and July "off"...then start back up sometime early August.  With the move to Decatur, GA quickly approaching I need to turn my mind to packing instead of educating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any homeschoolers in Decatur out there??????????

Growing In Christ,

Shay

Yes, I've done Alpha Omega and I hated it. I ALWAYS needed help from The Math Genius (Coie, of course) while I was using that program. I am now using, um, er, oh dear, I forgot. I'll let you know next time I get on.

Anyways, I think it's ilarious that you call that song the windshield wiper song! Now I'll think of you guys and your suburban wind sheild wipers when I hear that song. :-D

Thank you very very much for commenting on my blog. It was so great hearing from you! I miss you guys tons.

I'll ask Dad when the F/D camp is and let you know.

I love you so much and miss you all so very much!!!

shay,

We tried SOS for my daughter last year, and it just did not work well for her . ( I must say...I wasn't impressed with it either.) Part of the reason, though was that she was expected to know how to SPELL things like:
hyphen, number order, digit, addend, product, etc.

If she spelled them wrong, her answers (on the tests and quizzes) were marked as incorrect. I was able to go back in and change them, but it was very discouraging to her.
we actually started out with the whole 3rd grade package of SOS, and I 'ditched it' not even 3 months in.
I was also disappointed to find out that you can't 're-sell' it, because it is illegal according to their copyright /software licensing agreement.
(So basically we are out a LOT of money.) :-(

Hello again, Shay!
I am sorry I don't have any experience with either of those other math programs that you mentioned. We have tried several others (Abeka, Rod and Staff) but we finally found CLE (Christian Light Education) and it has literally been the answer to my prayers! I cannot recommend it enough! If you want more info I have a link to it on my blog, and I could also take some pictures for you and email you some 'samples' if you would like (?)

Blessings,
Michelle

Can you email me at mwell123@gmail.com so I know where to send the photos of CLE to?

Thanks,

I too am enjoying learning with the kids. I actually have a degree in History, but it's amazing how many things I never learned (or have completely forgotten). And teaching it makes it stick so much more. I really think I'm learning much more than the kids. LOL

I don't know anything about SOS.

I can't beleive Martha Bryan even remembers me! Wow, she has an amazing memory. I would have never remembered that had you not reminded me about me being her and her being me.
I don't have that magic watch anymore. I have a newer one that she can use....um...well, I guess she wouldn't be able to use it yet, but she could borrow it next time you guys come up here again. I don't know if this one will turn her in to me, but we can try! lol.
