"Organized" Chaos

• Oct. 6, 2008 - Help Me 2 Teach Review

This post has been a work in progress.  I wanted to make sure I took my time writing so I could  be completely objective about the site.   First let me tell you a bit about what it is.  Help Me 2 Teach, in a nutshell, is a search engine developed by a former teacher to help homeschoolers find Internet sites to supplement teaching.  You can sign up for as little as 3 days to try the service out for $4.95 with several options up to a year for $29.95.  For someone on a budget and with limited time to research the internet  this could be quite a help.

The concept is to make searching easier by providing sites that relate to what you are searching so that you don't have to weed through thousands of results on a regular search engine.  For me personally, this would not be a beneficial site.  We use KONOS as our basis for curriculum and study unit topics.  Right now, we are studying Explorers/Sailing/Navigation and specifically this next two weeks, Christopher Columbus.  Typing in several of these combinations in the search box either resulted in no hits or in some cases, hits that had nothing to do with the topic.  I specifically searched "Christopher Columbus" and received two results - one site on magnetism (which was a part of Columbus' navigation in the form of the compass) and the other site a biography site of literature authors (???).  I'm not sure how that site related to Columbus.

I did find that if I checked the Table of Contents for a subject, there seemed to be a more thorough collection of sites associated with a subject.  For example, we covered the Olympics recently and there are multiple sites listed based on that topic.  I checked through some of the sites and found them to be well chosen and had I had access to Help Me 2 Teach back in August, I would have certainly incorporated the web sites into my teaching.  American Elections & Voting was another unit we covered over the summer and also has some great information listed in the table of contents.

I guess my overall impression of Help Me 2 Teach and what it has to offer is this ------- Given time, as the owner has the opportunity to expand upon the sites attached to Help Me 2 Teach, it could be very beneficial to a busy home schooling mom.  I also think it would be a great tool to use with a student for researching topics. By having a place to send a child to research a subject in a controlled environment a parent wouldn't have to worry about "questionable" results which can happen with a mainstream search engine.   I would feel fine asking my 12 year old to research a topic for a paper knowing he would get strong information without wasting time weeding through a mountain of useless information or more troubling in this age of technology, inappropriate web sites popping up in that search.

So, as a work in progress I think Help Me 2 Teach has potential, but as most things in life, it will be a matter of time and ability to fill in the "gaps" for it to get there.  I would utilize the site as it continues to grow, but for now I think I can manage to search though traditional sites on my own to pull the information we need for our studies.
