Trying to homeschool in Germany
Sep. 25, 2006
our current location

I'd like to think that I should be careful about what I write on here, because the local authorities might be reading this and trying to find out if we're legal. Crazily enough, we ARE legal at the moment (for weird reasons, in my opinion), so that's okay. But anyway, I think a much bigger problem than outright persecution is the indifference, and I'm fairly confident that nobody is busy googling to find out what the Langes are up to. (Just in case, Hallo, liebes Schulamt! Möchten Sie langsam anfangen, für sich selbst zu denken? Wäre ja schön, und wir sind gerne bereit, Sie in solchen Bemühungen zu unterstützen.)

But even though we're legal, I don't let the children outside at home, regardless of the gorgeous weather, until after noon. And we're visiting friends this week who are also homeschooling (and with a less firm legal footing that we have), so our combined seven children all had to stay in the apartment all morning. Of course, we could be criticized because our children are out of "school" this week--but guess what, the next two weeks will be Autumn Vacation in Germany for both our state and the state in which we are at the moment, and our children will all have lessons during that time--but on our own schedule, because we'll be free to let the children out in the beautiful mornings. I hope it's not raining.

Have you made any decisions about Peru?

Don't forget there is a lovely place in Colorado you can come to live...!

The HSLDA had a message this week to all of its constituents to write letters to the German embassy... I hope it does you all some good.

Thinking of you.

Oct. 6, 2006 - cool!

Dear Sheila

Here's one who's been googling to find out what you're up to. I'm not sure why you're legal (I didn't even know you were back). We are not legal, but have been outed and the schulbehörden seem to be giving us a lot of leeway at the moment. If you want to you can email me (go to my blog www.gfoh.blogspot.com and leave a comment - it comes up on my email). Were you at the conference in Dassel? I missed it because my sil was visiting from South Africa - she visited the same time last year and then I was at the conference, so I didn't want to offend her by doing the same thing 2ce in a row. PS. have you been on the Stern or Spiegel forums - the anti-hs types are really busy there.
Ciao, Rina

My intention was originally just to store all the e-mails I've sent telling about our fight to homeschool in Germany. From August 2005 through February 2006, I also wrote about our experience in the German school system, and then we were out of the country for six months doing a DTS with YWAM. We've been back since the beginning of September, 2006.
