When Life Meets the Road

Too often I feel like I'm in a sports car going so fast down the highway that I miss the beauty of traveling down a good ole country road.  As a child growing up, I remember my dad taking us on country drives.  It was an outing just to go riding in the country.  We'd play counting the horses and cows.  I counted the drivers side cows and horses, my sister counted the passenger side as we pasted one green pasture after another.  Now, we have highways... to get us there FAST.

Are we like this with our child rearing?  Aren't they growing up so fast?!!!  I do try to take the country road in appreciating each stage of each daughter's life.  I want to meet them on the road, where ever they are to come along beside to guide them, mentor them.  I think of Jesus Who comes down to meet us where we are, to pick us up, to lift us up. Oftentimes, in His loving arms.  Sometimes, to nudge us along.  Jesus doesn't leave us there, but brings us up.  Just like I'm not going to come down on my daughter's level.  The goal is to bring her up to a mature, adult Christian way of living, thinking, worshiping, being.

Where are my children is this road of life?
Our 19 yo is going to college, learning to be a radiologic technologist.  She plans to wed next June.  I feel like there's only a few months left of daily mentoring.  Spiritual lessons, home-life skills such as cooking, home decorating, painting, and love of family are a few.  Once she's married, it will be a different kind of mentoring.  Likely much will be by telephone and not with daily hugs.

Our 17 yo is a senior and plans to start the local college next fall.  She thinks she knows what its all about, but there's many conversations and skills to be learned.  She's beginning to see the pieces of life as one sees a jumbled puzzle.  As she experiences each piece, my prayer is for the Lord to overshadow how she'll handle it.    She does well to study people and the problems they've had to avoid conflicts herself.  She works 2 pt jobs while she schools-at-home (she goes to a school once a week to turn in her completed work and to pick up her next week's work to do it all at home (except mid terms and final exams).  She's also very involved in her youth group, went to play paint ball yesterday.  As you see, she does have a lot of puzzle pieces.

Our 15 yo is in 10th grade with a desire to home school through high school.  A home body at heart.  She chose to stay home to help paint our house's exterior with her dad (a huge family project) rather than going to paint people with the youth group yesterday!!

Although at times life with teen girls can be weary, fearful of the unknown, I'm learning the joys of enriched conversations and studies with them.  I'm learning that fear is a sign of distrust... in our mighty God Who has the power to keep them, guide them, lead them in His green pastures...  and especially in the areas I'm inadequate to teach, lead, or guide.  He's the great Shepherd leading His flock.  I'm just a vessel ... and sometimes I think only a temporary vessel being used to assist His work.

If you are struggling in raising your children, I encourage you to lean a little more on God, trust in Him more and take a detour through an ole country road.  Enjoy the scenery, count your blessings, each and every one.

Intro to our family

Just so you could know who we are here is an introduction to our family.

These pictures were taken while on our summer vacation at one of Daytona, Fla beaches.  Having 3 teen daughters, one of our favorite hobbies is taking photo shoots.  We've never had a photo shoot at the beach.  This time we spent about an hour taking posed and fun pictures.

My husband are I are best of friends and have been from the moment we met almost 25 years ago.  We get along very well and love spending time together and with our sweet family.  My 3 daughters are 15, 17, and 19 yo.

These 3 sisters are best of friends.   They love their time spent together.  I hope it will always be this way!
Our 19 yo, Sharon with her fiance, Nathan. We were very glad that Nathan was able to go with us on our family vacation this summer. As you can tell, he was a good sport and fit right in with his 'adopted' sisters.  We call this picture, "Shunning Nathan.  But Sharon doesn't think so!"

I'm so thankful for all my girls, their personalities, and the right choices they make about life.  Our family has high Christian standards:  God and Jesus as the center of our lives, living first to please Him.  Then our family togetherness is also very important to all of us.

Some things I think are important although some may think they are simple:
-Eating breakfast, lunch, and supper together at the table in the kitchen.  There is always a sweet time of laughter and learning of one another's day and what's going on in each others lives.
-Worshiping together, especially on Sunday mornings.
-Honesty, truth, living righteously, praying for the fruit of the spirit be manifested in us all, trying to put on and keep on the whole armor of God.
-Have a close relationship with our extended family (our parents, sisters, and their families)
-Have a close relationship with our church family

We are not nearly a perfect family.  There's many ways we 'could' be better.  But we do try to love and forgive one another.

Hope this glimpse into our family gives you an idea of who we are.  I look forward in sharing about our lives with you and the little/big lessons of life I learn along the way.

Under the Almighty's wing,

Cindy
