Far too long

It has been far too long since I have been on here. We are doing great. We will be moving soon and will be working on using the garage in the house as a school room.
Dexter is reading Eragon and I bought a "workbook" from Homeschool eStore for him that goes with it. He is in third great and is a great reader.
I made my own workbooks for him and Joaquin and Maggie and they love them. I am so creative sometimes.

Happy Fall Ya'll

We are celebrating the return of Fall. We made some wonderful shirts last night with the kids. Of course they made each one so individual. This little project looked so different in my mind but each shirt has the kids personality in it. I will post some pictures of the kids in their shirts later.
I am amazed that the weather is already changing here in California. I am happy and so is my electric bill. Running the air all summer has hit our pocket book hard.

Seasons of Change

Autumn in coming in on us here in Southern California. The weather is cooling down and making for nice outside days. This is nice for us. The kids love being outdoors and so do we. We have had a lot of change recently around us. We have decided to go from a public virtual charter school and venture it out on out own. This will be scary at first I am sure. As it is our children learn far more outside of the current cirriculum they are using. We prayed about it and this seems much better and where God wants us. October first is the filing date here in California. We have named our school and will post more on that later.

We have been visiting the library more often now. This is so fun with the kids. We now carry a small crate in there. I think so the librarians will know us by name.

The small kids are learning about farms and farm animals this week. They are making lapbooks and really do enjoy it. This evenig after the boys went to bed Maggie was sitting on the floor. She stood up and said "Daddy, roosters say cock-a-doodle-do (chin up and arms as wings) and Daddy hens lay eggs (she was squatting and grunted). Then a baby chick comes and peck out of it's shell." That was so cute and unexpected from a 3 year old.

Joaquin and Dexter were playing a word game and Joaquin (who is 5 and not a full reader yet) says 'W-H-Y spells WHY". Ok that was very unexpected. This was awesome for us. We know he is learning so much and soaks up a lot of what Dex is learning and telling him. This is turning out to be a wonderful year.

Farms

This week the smaller kids are learning about Farms. Farm animals and foods. They are so excited. They are having fun with the lapbooks they are making for it. I am very pleased with the amount of printables I am able to find online for the theme. Joaquin and I went to the library this evening to get some books on farm animals and farm life.

Dexter is loving math and learning about Tundras

What About Socialization?

What About Socialization?
by Pam Hartley
10. We're training him to like isolation so that he can be an astronaut.
9. Socialization? We're Republicans!
8. Don't worry. We get together with other kids twice a week so he can
learn how to spit on them and treat them disrespectfully.
7. We do Unit Studies on Socialization, and also Hair Washing, Clothes
Folding, and other completely redundant subjects.
6. I'm sorry, I didn't hear you. I was mentally planning her week of
Girl Scouts, 4-H, dance class, karate, and soccer. What were you
saying about socialization?
5. If I could get him to stop planning so many group camping trips and
book fairs, I'd be able to convince him to socialize!
4. Huh?
3. Please, just for a change, ask me about college, okay?
2. Squeak, dive under the nearest object, peek out, and mutter "who
are you and what do you want?"
1. Oh, I know what you mean! That's why we're homeschooling

Work Area

We currently live in a two bedroom apartment. We don't have a learning room. There is just learning stuff all over...and quite unintentional for the most part. We are making our dining room into a computer room ( I will post pictures at a later time.). The kids do most of there hard surface work at the kitchen table that is now in the living room against the window. It actually works well and there is more natural light. Otherwise the kids can do a lot of their work wherever they are most comfortable. A lot  of the reading is done on some large pillows that are on the living room floor against the old TV center that now holds mostly books and magazines, a few hamster and a terrarium for the red eared slider.

You might be a Homeschooler

You might be a Homeschooler

  • If your whole class and teacher kiss the principal goodbye as he goes off to work
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If you and your teacher come to early morning class in your pajamas
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If school is recessed to bring in the groceries
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If cleaning the room, making the bed and preparing lunch is your daily assignment in Home Economics class
    ....
    YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If you have to relocate your chemistry lab each day so the family can eat lunch
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If you have to walk twenty feet back and forth to school each day
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If going to the park counts for both a nature fieldtrip and P.E.
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

  • If your wife asks for, and gets a copier instead of a diamond tennis bracelet for your wedding anniversary
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If your kids think that reading history is best accomplished while lying on the floor with their head resting on the side of their patient dog
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If the principal can give the teacher a pat on the behind and it's not harassment
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If your neighbors think you are insane
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If you can listen to your child's favorite hilarious passage from "Hank the Cow Dog" forty-seven times
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If your formal dining room now has a computer, copy machine and many book shelves and there are educational posters and maps all over the walls
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If you have meal worms growing in a container...on purpose
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If talking out loud to yourself is a parent/teacher conference
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If you take off for a teacher in-service day because the principal needs clean underwear
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If you can't make it through a movie without pointing out all the historical anachronisms
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If you step on math manipulatives in your pre-dawn stumble to the bathroom
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If your closet contains more than three jumpers
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If when visiting a strange town you see a parking lot full of mini-vans and station wagons and wonder if it's a homeschooling conference
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.
  • If you live in a one-house schoolroom
.... YOU might be a homeschooler.

Today

Today Jimmy had jury duty so he gave Dexter a mini lesson on what that was all about.
I started some lapbooks with Joaquin and Maggie for the letter A. I think it will be nice to see them when they are complete. Dexter reads everyday to the younger kids. Soon we will be starting Joaquin and maybe Maggie with BRI books.

Last week Joaquin and Maggie got their fisrt library cards. They were so excited!!!
