Educating Emme

• Aug. 12, 2006 - Hurry! It's a contest!

Posted in School Ideas

I decided to join in on the contest posted at Jacque's_blog -- go and check it out.  The questions below were posted there, as well as the contest rules!

  • What type of homeschooler are you?How do you homeschool? (Do you plan??)

Let's see.....  Well, we are eclectic.  We follow Charlotte Mason's philosophy but we also make things up as we go!

  • Are you using a specific curriculum or a conglomeration or none?

Conglomeration!    We utilize Ambleside for their art, composer, nature study, poetry, and  book   lists.   We use Christian_Liberty_Press for help with math, history, and science.  We use Draw! Write! Now! for handwriting.  The Beginner's Bible and the NIV Bible for religion.  We use Five in a Row, Explode the Code, and also Apologia's Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day.  On top of that we will be using a timeline and living books for history, a nature journal, lapbooks, a science notebook, literature notebook, and plenty of wonderful websites!

  • Are you making it up yourself?

Parts of it sure, but mostly I use bits and pieces of everything.

  • Do you have a plan or just use ideas as you go?

I actually DO plan, believe it or not!  I have spent quite a few hours mapping out our schedule for our first term.  (We start September 5th)  I've been printing lots of information and Book_of_Century pages tonight.  I'm awaiting my final shipment of curriculum before putting the finishing touches on my schedule!

  • Do you homeschool in desks, at the table or anywhere it works??

We do most of our studies at the kitchen table, but our family read alouds and other "literature moments" are on the couch or even snuggling in mom's bed!

  • Tell me what you are excited about that you will be doing!

Ok, this will sound weird..... but I am really excited about doing our American History this year!  First term starts out with Native Americans and we are going to be reading tons of great living books, doing crafts, eating Native American food, listening to music, watching movies, and really surrounding ourselves with the culture.  (I'm 1/16th Cherokee)  I'm excited about the Book of Centuries and keeping a timeline.  *Woohoo*

  • Are you going to teach each child in their own grade level or do you multi-grade teach?

Due to my ex husband's beliefs about homeschooling (*ahem*) my two older children will be staying in school.  We homeschool during the summer, have family read alouds, and we "afterschool" as much as possible.  With that being said, I will be teaching Emme at her own grade level, Year 1.
