Educating Emme

• Sep. 13, 2006 - Links, free stuff, and a productive school day!

Posted in Homeschool Life

Thanks to those of you who gave me advice yesterday when I was feeling overwhelmed right here at the beginning of the school year!  I"m feeling much better today!

I worked on the house just 10 minutes at a time and I did get enough accomplished that you can actually see an improvement!  I'll be putting in my 3rd load of laundry in a few minutes, I finally washed the pots and pans which were stacked up  and I will have a fairly clean kitchen when I go to bed tonight!  I will have the clean laundry folded and put away, one load hanging (to save on energy) Emme's school work all done and finished up yesterday's work, sent a card to a friend -- *sigh*  I feel better.

And for dinner tonight we are having pork fried rice with Indian bread!  We are doing a Native American study this term and tonight we make our first authentic recipe!  Ok, maybe it's not, but we hope it is at least close!  Here is the link for the recipe, courtesy of Hillbilly_Housewife  : Indian:Fry:bread  I'm not going to tell you that this is figure flattering, because it's not!  We're going to have one small slice each and save the rest for another day!

So here is how our schooling went today:

  • Listened to one chapter of "Charlotte's Web" on CD in the car and discussed.  (We do this in a very informal/fun way, she doesn't realize it's schoolwork!)
  • Did 2 pages in Liberty math (review of numbers and addition)
  • Read "Our Nation" from CLP - about creation
  • Read from "Our Father's World" from CLP - also about creation and we supplemented this
  • The Nature Reader, Butterflies and Moths (another theme we have going)
  • And supplemented History with:  Stories of Early America, we read a poem about Indians and a short story "Before the White Man Came"
  • We drew a picture of Indians for our notebook.  I drew a Chief dancing around the fire and Emme drew a young squaw picking berries.
  • We did our spelling words for the week and wrote them out for handwriting.
  • We did our reading lesson, still doing 100EZ Lessons -- she is excited that she is reading words with FIVE letters now!
  • ETC for phonics
  • Made the Indian bread
  • Listened to Mozarts Piano Concerto #20, 1st movement

Later we will read for pleasure and Emme is BEGGING ME to read to her from the Pearables Home Economics book that came in the mail today!  The chapters are super short with pages to color -- just ADORABLE for her age!!  And when we go pick up dh, we'll listen to one more chapter of "Charlotte's Web" (very short chapters.

So a really productive school day!

Also a great freebie day!  I got a nurse coloring book and poster from Johnson and Johnson, a free game, book about teaching kids to read, and an entire HEALTH curriculum!!!!  It has a VHS tape, cd-rom game, and about a 3-inch high pile of information and worksheets to put in a binder!  These were freebies from Child Development services -- if I can find the link, I will post it.
