• Dec. 2, 2008 - Yes we can? No we can't!

Posted By Deb

The mantra of the Obama era is "Yes we can!"  This is a perfect time to teach our children the very core of humanism.  Man thinks they can do it.  They think that we will continue "evolving" and somehow create a perfect world.

It will take very little time for this to all fall, just as the Tower of Babel had to.  Such pride.

No we can't.  Man cannot, and will not do it.  We'll be talking about this in our family, with the children.  As we watch and follow the news over the next few years, I'll remind them of the mantra, and how mankind thought "Yes we can!"

When mankind finds out they can't, they tend to look around to see who they can blame.  President Bush was blamed for Katrina, for crying out loud.

We live in a fallen world.  No we can't.  Yes, GOD can.  A man centered world will never work, just the same as it never has worked.  Mankind just doesn't get it, do they?  No we can't!  No we can't!

I pray that as things fall apart over the next few years, many will finally come to realize that "No we can't" and decide to put God on the throne of their hearts.  The time is short.  He is coming soon.

• Dec. 1, 2008 - Tightwad Tuesday ~ Bartering Successes and Recycling Candles

Posted By Canadagirl in Tightwad Tuesday

 [Church Candles]

Winter time is setting in and it is a great time for candles at dinner or just b/c.  I found a neat video that shows how to make old candles into NEW.   Go HERE

I also wanted to show off some bartering success I got when I was selling at the  Craft Fair.  I traded my fudge , rhubarb juice, and candles for these.  I have a few more things to show but it will have to wait till later.  Little eyes will see it other wise.

Here is a Advent Cookie that my friend makes and bartered with me on.  I love these.

 OHHHHH these smell soooooooooooooo GOOD.

Ohhh I forgot to modle this off for you.

• December 1, 2008 - The Fun Spanish

Posted By Melissa Telling in Curriculum Reviews

The Fun Spanish is a seventeen week beginner's course designed to teach children Spanish one phrase at a time, following the principles of Charlotte Mason. Common Spanish vocabulary is introduced in the context of somewhat unusual sentences which make learning fun. Each week a new verb is introduced, which the child must then practice conjugating each day. Several new vocabulary words are also introduced every day. These words are to be used in translating a short sentence into Spanish. There is then a silly Spanish sentence, using that week's verb and the vocabulary words that have just been learned, which must be translated into English. There is also a place for the child to draw an illustration to use as a memory aide for this sentence. At the end of the week, there is a two page review page which once more goes over the verb conjugation and vocabulary, and provides one more opportunity for the child to translate the Spanish sentences they have learned into English.

This program is laid out very well and is easy to use. There is no complicated teacher's manual to wade through, so you can jump right in and start learning. The introduction of a few words at a time breaks this subject into chunks which are easy to handle and fit well into an already overcrowded school day, the worksheet format allows children to work with little teacher assistance, and the continual review guarantees that the material will be retained. While it would be a good idea to also add some language tapes to your Spanish curriculum, this book will help greatly in the learning of vocabulary. $19.51 $9.77

Posted By FaithfulGrace

FOR TODAY ...   December 1st, 2008

Outside my window...

Our first snow fall has blanketed the ground in a beautiful winter wonderland.

I am thinking... About the beautiful gift of the Christmas season.

I am thankful for...My quiet time this morning.  His Word continually renews and refreshes me.

From the learning rooms...Today we are taking the day off to decorate the house for Christmas.  The girls were gone all weekend, and this will give us a relaxed time to enjoy this special memory.

From the kitchen...  I will be making turkey soup from their carcasses and cookies for an exchange this evening.

I am wearing...  My pj's.  Soon I will wear my favorite jeans and layered shirts to keep warm.

I am creating... Our Jesse ornaments, found at this site....RCA Jesse Tree I will be doing a simple stitch on muslin with black thread.  I hope to have Jennifer also make a set with me.

I am going... to the dentist in a few hours.  We all have appointments

I am reading... Besides my bible, I have begun several books which are in my sidebar.

I am hoping...To not be late to the dentist.  Getting on the computer in the morning is huge time blaster for me.  But I've been hoping to do this for months.

I am hearing... The furnace kick on, and it's gentle hum.

Around the house...We are preparing for the celebration of our Savior's birth.

One of my favorite things... My yummy coffee each morning.  At Costco we buy a box that has individual packages in it, then I add Sugar Free French Vanilla Creamer.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
*Begin our Advent studies.
*Get back on track with good eating habits and exercise.
* Begin our Native American studies

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

Wishing you a blessed Monday!

Linda

• Nov. 30, 2008 - I Shopped and I Dropped and Lapbooking

Posted By Michelle

Thanksgiving Day we went out to my brother's house.  We had a good time.  We even watched old family videos. They were so funny!!!  Those teen years I tell ya    I can't believe how old I am now.   We figured out the ages of us all.   I realized that my Mom was younger in the videos than my husband.  Weird I tell ya!!

Every year my Mom and I go shopping in the weeee hours on black Friday.  I was trying to figure out a way not to freeze to death.  I remembered that Ma Ingalls gave the girls potatoes to put in their pockets.  At least that's where I think the idea came from?? Anyways..... I put 4 potatoes in the microwave so we would each have 2.  It actually worked great.  We both agreed that next year we are taking way bigger potatoes. LOL
When I finally returned home I was exhausted!!!   I laid down for a 1/2 hr and then got up and started preparing dinner.   We were having people over for our Friend Thanksgiving around 4.  They left around 8:30. I am not sure they were out of our driveway when I crawled into bed and passed out.  Which is very odd for me.  My usual bedtime is 10:30-11:00.
In honor of Thanksgiving we made our "Thank you Jesus for...." wall.

We also did a Thanksgiving lapbook.  It stressed being thankful and what that looks like lived out.  I was telling them we can say thank you, but acting thankful is more important.  We also did Bible verses about a thankful heart, learned about the first Thanksgiving, and did fun pages too.

front cover

In the journal they had to decide each day what they were thankful for and how they would demonstrate it.  It really made them think

On this page :They had "in their own words" define thankful and then look it up and write the dictionary definition.  They read the parable and we talked about what kind of hearts we need to have.  They wrote out memory verses in the "I will hide your words in my heart". In the lightbulb we listed things we were thankful for and how we were going to show we were.  Toys > take care of them etc...  They did the thankful book and drew pictures too.  And then we talked about what we eat at Thanksgiving.

Here we ordered how the Indians had taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn, we also made a list on the board of what they could use the corn for.  We also followed steps to draw a turkey and I read some facts about them.

I stapled the 14 various worksheets we did on the inside flap and put the First Thanksgiving book inside the lapbook too.  The worksheets included crossword puzzles, word searches, word mining, drawing with stories, abc order, and more.

All in all it was very fun! I can't wait to start our Christmas one

:>Michelle

Update...sorry for the weird picture sizing. I think I fixed it.  I couldn't post pictures using Mozilla (no clue since that's what I always use???)  and had to go to Internet Explorer.

• Dec. 1, 2008 - I WILL LIFT MY EYES

Posted By Valerie (SoCalVal)

***I am going to be taking an extended blogging break during the month of December.  I will be checking in on my friends and visiting others, but I will not be posting as much.  Please feel free to leave me messages and/or comments in my C-box.  I love to hear from you.

I wish you all the best Christmas season.

I heard this amazing song this week at church.  I thought I would share the lyrics with you.  This was my first time hearing the song and I fell in love with it immediately.  The words are powerful.  You can YouTube it and see a video and hear the melody if you desire  (click here).  Enjoy.

I Will LIft My Eyes

God, my God, I cry out
Your beloved needs You now
God, be near calm my fear and take my doubt
Your kindness is what pulls me up
Your love is all that draws me in

I will lift my eyes to the Maker
of the mountains I can't climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You

God, my God, let mercy sing
her melody over me
and God, right here all I bring
is all of me
Your kindness is what pulls me up
Your love is all that draws me in

'Cause You are and You were and You will be forever
the Lover I need to save me
'Cause You fashioned the earth and You hold it together, God
so hold me now

• Monday, December 1, 2008 - Only 13 more days... "Rekindling Romance"

Posted By Amy Verlennich
So ladies... we're on the countdown!  ONLY 12 MORE DAYS until The 12 Days of Christmas... SHMILY style!  I'll be posting with some helpful tips and ideas, so keep checking back!...

As you think about what it is you could be doing over The 12 Days of Christmas, take a few minutes to watch the following link to a video about Rekindling Romance.  It has some great tips and ideas about romance and how to keep it alive.  Some focus points:
  • Remember what got you here - don't forget what made you fall in love
  • Recover the relationship first - heal any hurts first
  • Romance is intentional - it takes effort and is worth your time
  • Set regular dates - make your spouse a priority
  • Hit 2-3 "home runs" in a year - significant time alone with just you and your spouse
Now... go ahead and ask your hubby what makes him feel loved.  I'm serious... give him a piece of paper, write at the top, I FEEL LOVED WHEN YOU... and have him write down things that he feels loved by when you do it.  (You can even click on the following link to print out a pdf one for you... I FEEL LOVED WHEN YOU printable.)  You may be surprised at some of the things you do that you think go unnoticed (and don't be upset if he "misses" something that you already do for him.  Instead, you might have been putting your time in something that meant more to you than him...  Don't let your pride be hurt.  Men and women are different, and The 12 Days of Christmas is about loving him how he wants to be loved.)   Tell Ask him to write down everything he can think of that makes him feel loved... you could even leave the list in a place where he can continue to add to it.  This list will give you a great start as to some of the things that you can be intentional about doing during The 12 Days of Christmas as well.  (This can be a great thing to do with your kids too!  It's great to know what makes people (and kids) feel loved... and then do it!)

I had made a list for my hubby, and when he read it, it actually made him feel great.  He said, "I've done all of these things..."  See, the point is not to dream about things you wish happened... but what already has.  Now, some of the things on my list hadn't been done in awhile, but when my husband looked at the list, he didn't feel as if I was asking for something that would never happen because they already had.

Just to leave you with a few ideas to give to your husband (so that it's not "your" list that you're giving him... and if he winds up asking you to make a list... GREAT!... but remember, that's not why you're doing this).

I FEEL LOVED WHEN YOU...
  • hold my hand
  • have tea with me in the morning
  • put gas in the car
  • kiss me in public
  • ask my opinion
  • hold the door for me
  • change a diaper
  • buy me flowers
  • put your arm around me at church
As you can see from the few things I've taken from my original list, there are more "little" things that cost nothing then the other way around.  You may find the same to be true of the list your husband gives you.  Think of how wonderful it will be to know what makes him feel loved... because that's the whole point of The 12 Days of Christmas
