Following in the footsteps of my three times Great Grandmother Charlotte, who taught school around the fireplace in her Virginia home in the 1850's...

Show & Tell Friday (School Days Edition)

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

I know I'm a little early, but I won't be able to upload anything tomorrow and I didn't want to miss! My sweet friend Mary is the hostess of this Show &Tell, so be sure to go visit her and see all of the wonderful treasures she has to share!

Now, since it's back to school time, I have been sharing some of the "school days" memorabilia from my family. Today's S&T will be about books! Oh, how I love books. My house is FULL of them. Being a homeschool mom, I was thrilled to inherit these.

All but one in this set belonged to my grandma. I see that she must have shared with her sister (five years younger) because some of the books have both of their names written in.

I think this one has such a lovely cover.

Tucked inside one of them was an English assignment from my great-aunt, and a spelling list of my grandma's!

This book belonged to my grandpa who was raised in Melvern, Kansas.

I have several school books that belonged to my great-grandfather (Gram's father). I love how he has written in them.

And this one belonged to my great-great grandfather!

What a treasure you have ! My Grandma was born in 1910 and to see those dates ...wow ! I love how back then they really put a lot of time and effort into writing and drawing. You can see it by what they drew in their book. (0;

Thanks for joining again my SSiC (((hugs)))

Oh how neat! I have a couple of older books that look similar to yours, but I don't think any schoolbooks. I especially love the written assignments & spelling list - now that is a super rare find! Too bad we don't have the "teacher's book" that we could do likewise! Fastforwarding a bit - I will have to blog someday on how I got a Dick & Jane book absolutely free one day - from a total stranger - evidently she didn't know they go for $75 at the antique store.

Well, I need to head to the barn - hay comes tomorrow morning early. Have a good night my friend! Someday I would like at least a virtual tour of your home - if you don't mind the drool :) Have a nice night!

Amy,
What a treasure!
I love books too. I fill my home with them as much as I can. I love the old books you have. I have some that the previous owners were going to throw out and I asked if I could keep them but they are not as old as yours. I also found old hymnals at our library one day for $1. I bought them for my brother because he collects them but I must confess I was coveting them. The library was "cleaning out the attic". I hope to find more good books the next time I go back.

You know these are priceless museum pieces, don't you? :-)
Wow, what a museum would give to have you donate this for the "public" good. But hang on to your heritage (not to mention your research materials for the novel you are going to write!) I'm pretty envious of those books and would LOVE to get my hands on them. You'll see why when you read my second book. (Wish I'd had your books to look at when I was imagining the classroom and the school day in the book.) sigh

Here, you'll read about our days of homeschooling our three sons on our 100 acre farm. Our classroom is wherever we are, be it out under the oaks or a blanket of stars. Home education is a way of life here and there's never a dull moment!
