Show & Tell Friday (School Days Continued)

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

Here are a few more of my school days treasures! Please stop by Mary's blog to participate or just enjoy visiting!

This is my grandma's high school photograph. Next to it, is a brick that was in the schoolhouse that she attended in Indiana.

This is her school days memory & autograph book. I have so enjoyed reading through it!

This entry was written by my grandma's cousin, Fairy, who was more like a sister. They grew up together and played for hours on the family farm. In the winter, they were always thrilled to have snow storms that would mean one cousin staying on until roads were passable. As young women, they traveled to California together. While my grandpa was at war, Gram lived with her and my aunt was born in their home. I have always loved her as well, she is such a dear person. Fairy now has dementia, and she cannot remember that my grandma died. She asks her daughters about her everyday and then says, "Oh, I remember now. Maybe it's better that I forget."

"In your drugstore of memories, remember me as a pill."

A few entries...

Forget Me Not

--Ronald Edison Frantz

***

Dear Alberta,

When the golden sun is setting

and the earth no more you trod

May your name in gold be written

In the autograph of God.

Yours till Niagra Falls,

Opal Stuber

***

Back behind the chicken house,

I knelt unpon my knees

and almost died a laughing,

to hear a chicken sneeze.

Yours till moon shines,

Maxine Angle

***

Dear Alberta-

Health, wealth, happiness-

Earth's golden store

Heavenly rest, after death

How I might wish you more.

Yours till the mountains peek and seas the salad dressing,

Clara Betsy Flora

***

Dear Alberta-

When you get old and ugly

As most all old folks do

Remember you have a friend

Who is old and ugly too.

In your chain of friendship, remember me as a link.

Lena Mae Helms

***

Dear Alberta-

It was midnight on the front porch

Their lips were tightly pressed

(Alberta and Richard's)

Mr. Kinzie gave the signal

And the bull dog did the rest.

Always a friend,

Eddie Simp

I should also mention that the quilt pictured with these items was a graduation present to my grandma from her grandmother. The pattern is "Lost Ship" and it's in near perfect condition. Here is another picture of it on my bed.

Oh what a treasure this is. There is something that is so different in their time and area. The way they express their terms of endearment are so precious. We seemed to have lost that in our times. I love it and so enjoy reading notes that have that flavor of expression. Thank you for sharing this ! Oh, btw I might call you Frank till I see your pic. [0; hee hee.

God Bless my SSiC

Amy,
These are some wonderful treasures that you have. I love the way they expressed themselves in their writing. The style is just so beautiful. You don't see anything like that these days. The quilt is beautiful also.
Thanks for sharing about your mom and homeschooling. It is because of people like her that we are so free to do what we do today. Your mom seems like an amazing woman!

What a beautiful S&T. I loved the photo's. Eeeks! Makes my S&T of globes so boring. LOL! Oh well, it's my first time participating ;) maybe next time I'll have something with more meaning.

I can just get lost in this stuff! Those autograph books are precious. You notice the time and care taken with the penmanship! Did you know some school districts are not going to teach cursive any longer? They have so much technology to teach now days and most kids keyboard.
Ah! Lost skills from a more laid-back time--a time that put forth their best effort to see a job well done.
I have an autograph book, too, from the 6th grade. Here is one of the entries: "Yours 'til the ocean wears pincurls to keep its waves in place." Not quite up to your grandmother's book, eh?

Oh what a nice blog......you have such amazing treasures! Your mother's story so INSPIRES me. I so admire her for standing up to what she knew was right, despite the pressure. I wish I could say THANK YOU, so just pass that along for me ;)

that the creativity of these entries reflects the change in education that has taken place in the last 70 years. How creative these friends were! I especially like the closing signature.

Wow, your grandmother was beautiful (I'm sure you look just like her). The penmanship is beautiful (I'm really into beautiful penmanship - I want to go to a museum in the TwinCities again and see if I can get a copy of a couple pages out of Ben Franklin's secretary's journal - I want to write just like him). The quilt is beautiful - I love quilts!!! And the autographs certainly put my schooling to shame - oh, to be a mouse in the corner of your grandma's school & home and learn as she did! Thanks for sharing this! Your house is just one big facinating museum - can I come live with you? lol
