Thursday, March 27, 2008 - A Sonnet
I'm sure you all think another entry is due, and I happen to agree! I give you a sonnet that I wrote a couple weeks ago. Not very good, I fear, but it was my first attempt at a sonnet. I'll improve. Don't think I will always post poetry- I wanted to post some of my other writing today, but the excerpts I was considering needed revision, so I'll work on that this week and *hopefully* post it next week. I'm also working on posting some of the recordings I've made of my singing, but I'm still trying to get past the html barrier! Look for them eventually.
Of Loyalty
Tense, restless stallions paw their feet and blow,
And seasoned warriors clench the cold sword hilt.
Even the bravest make themselves breathe slow.
They contemplate the fortress, strongly built.
Each warrior knows this ride may be his last.
His last attempt to rally for his king.
Each is aware that when the trumpet blasts,
His wish will be to die or do this thing.
"Seize it!" the royal words rise on the air.
Striking courage into the hearts of all.
Their king has faith in them, and so they'll dare
Before the night is gone to scale the wall.
They have no fear, though death this night may bring.
They willingly will die to serve their king.

Here is a beautiful piece of music you might enjoy- sent to me by a person who is normally very critical of music and only accepts the best. But he shockingly doesn't like Handel!!! So this is for all you classical music lovers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JYhnx3Jj6w

I'll be going to a Vision Forum conference this weekend, so I'll (sadly) be absent for a few days. I'll be back on Monday.
Thank you all for being so welcoming- I never guessed I should receive 70 comments in 3 entries! Y'all really are amazing! (Yes, I do say y'all quite a lot here in Texas!)

Oh, I love the sonnet! I love the epic theme, medival and heroic. Bravo! I love your poetry! Keep writing sonnets, because I can tell you have a gift for them (even though you may not feel like it at the moment).
Inspired by you, I wrote a sonnet last night. It is not nearly as good as yours, but I am going to post it today (hopefully) and would like to hear what you think about it. It is about Joy, like we were talking about (I think I've been reading this C. S. Lewis book way too much :).
And about what you said, I totally agree with you (in case it seemed like I didn't). There are just times when I feel God more and other times when I don't, and in pursuit of that I write poetry. I have read many poets who were depressed because they were searching for Joy without God and came out empty. I admit that I once was like that, trying to come to heaven by another nonexistent route. And actually, what you said was rather convicting, as I have spent the past few days wandering a little. (Ugh!)
I am amazed at the number of people who commented on your last post! Wow! You are off to a running start with your blogging!
Keep up the excellent writing, and God bless you!

Well, I've written two poems:

They are horrid compared to the poems that Poetic Maiden writes, and I'm sure yours are much better too! I'm going to add you to my friends list.

Why are you all so surprised that so many people posted comments? Gracie is just a likable person is all.
Your sonnet was REALLY good. I sadly (adverb) have no skill in writing poetry. :-(
looking forward to future entries.

That's really neat! What do you mean it wasn't very good? Sounded good to me!
I'll miss your sweet comments and posts, but do hope you have a good time at the Vision Forum confrence! So that's why y'all couldn't come to the choir competition...
RYC: I will have to try making a widget sometime... Sounds fun!
I only write comments on my friends blogs, which keeps me very busy, what with 67 or so people on it. ;-) I agree with Melanie, you will be quite a popular blogger!
Jo le Canto was a big hit! With Treble choir at least! *clap, clap, clap!* ;-)
Addios, Amigo!

Well, you're welcome. I do think it's good, I'm not just saying that. =^)
Let's just hope you're right! Yes, Six Flags is fun! Next time we go, I'm going to ride a roller coaster with loops! I've only ridden one with loops, but it was pitch black, so, it didn't really count. ;-)

I hadn't even thought of 'make the bed' or 'dress the turkey'. There are so many oddities. Maybe I should do a whole catagory of them :) LOL. That would certianly be very interesting.

That sonnet is really beautiful. I love beautiful things. I have posted the ending of a very long poem(I won't post the whole thing). I think it is lovely.
The sisters embraced
And then they parted,
Their faces tear washed.
But they wept no more,
And smiled instead, laughed
At what would come,
Whatever would come, though
Hoping, hoping, someday
To embrace again.
Now, when specter haunts,
Or dragon flames,
Or ogre attacks,
Or gryphon descends,
Bamarre fights on,
And the timid march
With the strong.
The tailor, the cook,
The farmer, the queen
From village from field,
From castle, from wood
Bamarre, land of heroes,
Fights on.
Step follows step.
Hope follows courage
Set your face toward danger
Set your heart on victory
Victory for Bamarre!
- From the closing of the epic poem
Two Princesses
Thanks for your offer of help on my blog, but I think I can probably get it. ^_^

LOL! That's more comments than I get in a month or 2!
LOL I can twirl a wooden sword with my right hand, but I can't with my left (so no duel sword weilding)
Yeah, but LOTR is based in the sword ages, if you like lasers, watch Star Wars, LOL

I'm not sure if I will actually ever be able to get around to learning mandolin. I'm not taking real lessons, going to try to teach myself with a book or video. But I really hope I will get time enough to learn.
Your blog is so beautiful! How did you get the fancy font in the title? I can't figure it out.

I have a wood sword, it's easy to twirl. just like anyone can twirl a stick. I never was taught to Twirl anything, like a baton. I just swing it in a circle with my wrist.
I've played laser-tag once, it was fun, but I didn't shoot the targets to get extra points, and the other guy did, but overall I got him shot more than I got shot.

I am so glad you liked my sonnet! I am so glad that it turned out. Since you are interested I will post the first one, but I am warning you: it's not nearly as good as the first one.
I love long comments also! And I do not think that yours are too long at all! Every blogger that I know loves getting lots of feedback, because that shows that the person commenting is genuinely interested in what they have said. So by all means, do not stop leaving long comments! What is the use of blogging if we do not discuss what we think?
Thank you for your encouragement! I am so glad to have found a fellow 'poetic fanatic', as I sometimes refer to myself. I feel that the more people with a common interest talk to each other, the better each person gets.
I took the lotr character quiz that you have the results from, and I also came out Galadriel, in case you are interested.
God bless you in your blogging, and may he continue to strengthen your writing!

Thanks! It will be interesting to see how long the film would be with a good director and cast. The general rule of thumb for screenplays is that 1 page = 1 minute of screen time. Of course, that isn't always accurate, depending on how much detail you write, but it's pretty close. By that standard, the movie will be a little over 2 hours long.
As for music...my 14 1/2 year old sister Rachel composes her own variations on the piano that sound perfect for an old fashioned movie sound track! She's a bit bashful about it and doesn't think her music is really that good, but all of us say that if anyone accepts my screenplay, we should let them hear Rachel's music and consider that for the sound track. It's refreshingly unique, which is the sort of thing you want to hear in movies.
I like your sonnet! Very ballad like.
Wow! You're going to a Vision Forum conference? Be sure to tell us all about it!
I use the term "y'all" a lot too, though otherwise my accent isn't really very Southern, since I've lived in so many other places besides the South (I guess I just have a neutral American accent - thought sometimes Rachel tells me she hears a little Southerness in it).
:-)
Hope to hear from you again soon!

Your sonnet reminds me of Lord of the Rings, I got a mental picture of Rohirrim storming Helm's Deep, which is very strange. Anyway I really like it! and it rymes too!

Hello,
I have seen your username online quite often and have checked out your blog before, but just now decided to leave a comment. You and I have many of the same interests, such as Narnia, writing, reading, archery, etc. I also enjoy Renaissance things and sometimes a bit of Celtic.
When you get a chance check out my blog. I would love to hear from you! Oh, and by the way, welcome to HSB. ;)

Nice poem/sonnet! (I still don't know the difference...)
Yeah, sometimes I wish I was back in the olden times with swords and bows. :D
Curu is oldest, then its me, then its Luthien and then Legolas. Do you have any siblings blogging?

I'm just entering it into an exhibition.... though it might be fun to enter it into a contest sometime! (If there are any miniature contests around, that is. :-)
I'm glad you like the header picture! I needed a bright, sunny, spring picture to replace the winter one, and the dogwood flowers seem to work very nicely.
By the way, your sonnet was very nice! The way you wrote it seemed to make the story come alive.

Yes, please feel free to add me and to comment. Ah, the poetic nature is so wonderful! I assume you write poetry? You should post some, I've only dipped into it once or twice.
Anyway, later!

Hello again. :)
I would have to say that my favorite Narnia book is either The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe or The Silver Chair, although I love all of them.
Yes, I am a fan of the books & the movie, as you can probably tell from my blog layout. Although the movie is a good interpretation, I will always stay loyal to the books. :)
Do you mind if I add you to my friends list?
Blessings,
Kylie
