As I stand beside the doorway
Of our little Scottish home,
I watch the men and boys go out,
A'searchin' for renown.
Such trials are before them-
I can see it in their eyes.
But they'd rather go and fight for truth
Than hark to England's lies.
Chorus:
It's for rocky crags and spires,
Crystal lochs and castle towers,
For the purple hills and wild, barren moors,
It's for Scotland they will fight,
And it's for Scotland they will die.
And in my heart I wish that I was going too.
I wonder how it feels to wield
A sword in Scotland's name.
But the men who go so bravely
Only have their sticks and staves.
Oh it's hard to be a lady
When our freedom is at stake.
'Tis so hard to be content here
While men die for Scotland's sake.
Chorus
I say a silent prayer
As they slowly march away.
I hope their homes will still be here,
When they return someday.
Yet if King Edward slaughters them
Like Wallace and the rest,
We're still so proud they took a stand;
The last of Scotland's best.

Oooooh...
I like this. Enormously. It needs a tune to sing it to, Grace!

Yay, you like it! *is happy*
Actually, I wrote it to an existing tune. Ever heard of the song, "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears"? That's the tune. I can send you a YouTube link if you want. And I think there's a recording of the Irish Tenors singing it in my favorites on YouTube.
It sounds cool! But the tune is probably copyrighted and all that. So I'll have to get around to writing my own. Or maybe I could hire someone to do it for me! That's a thought....

Hi Grace!
I saw you were friends with my brother Gandalf and decided to come check out your blog!
You write great poetry!
I really like pictures of Scotland and Ireland. It is so beautiful there. Have you read 'In Freedom's Cause' by G. A. Henty? It is about Scotland's fight for freedom against the English. It is really good. It has Sir William Wallace, Sir Robert Bruce, and others in it. (Like all G. A. Henty books, it has some fiction in it.) :)
Do you mind if I add you to my friends list?

Yes, your other poem was a little gloomy, but this one's the opposite! I've just had an inspiration! (i guess that'd be what you'd call it, anyway. =)
You could just read the verses with as much emotion as you can muster up, and have the music (whatever you compose, that is) playing in the background.
Then when the chorus comes around, you can sing, and have the music a bit louder - with bagpipes, Grace. You must have bagpipes. =)

That was beautiful.
These days I have been putting Scottish poems to music...and I think that one follows right along with the Scottish style...perfect.

Nathan, that's wonderful that you set poems to music- I keep meaning to do that with all of mine, and putting it off. ;-)

Well, I love music-but I can't say much for my voice. It sounds kind of like the G string on my violin :-B. It needs to be replaced. *pouts*
Grace is a 16 year old girl who is striving to follow God's leading, but would be constantly embracing failure if God didn't just sweep her off her feet, sometimes against her will. Music is her first love and expertise: specifically voice, but also piano. She has been trained classically, which is a good thing, most of the time, except when she wants to sing pop style... and can't. Her favorite genres of music are Celtic, Scottish and Irish folk songs/jigs, film music, and broadway show tunes. Grace also takes pleasure in the beautiful diversions of writing poetry, Ultimate Frisbee, sketching, dancing in the rain, Irish Step Dancing, speech and debate tournaments, scrapbooking, acting, reading, photography, standing outside at night while the wind whips the trees every which way, and talking about herself in the third person.
