Little Miss J is a Big Girl

Julia found her thumb when she was three months old.  She has sucked her thumb and carried a "silky baby" for her whole 3 and a half years.

Last Wednesday, Paul and Isaac had dentist appointments.  I took Julia along to watch because she will have an appointment in August.  She was so excited.  She began counting down the "sleeps" a week before.  While at the office, she and I looked over a brochure about thumb sucking and the harmful affect it can have on teeth.  I showed her pictures of "bad teeth".  I also asked the dentist to mention it to her.

I was fully prepared to begin weaning her by only allowing her to suck it in the car and at night.  Then only at night, and finally put away the "silky baby" and stop the night sucking.

She had other plans.  She quit cold turkey.  She said, "I don't want bad teeth."  It has been five days now and she has gone without the silky baby and thumb even at night.  Occasionally she will say she wants to suck her thumb, but we will try to get her mind on something else.  She is doing so well, I don't want her to regress.

I hope her resolve continues.  And mine too.  I didn't think it would be so emotional for me.  My baby is growing up.  Sniff Sniff.

Good job, Julia! Big girls don't need their thumbs and you're growing up. You're so pretty you don't want bad teeth either.

Wow! That's amazing! My Habanero is still sucking his thumb when no one is looking...at the age of almost 7. Good thing the front teeth are gone now. All we need is for the new ones to miraculously come in straight. (I've been praying for that.)

Hope you all make it through. It won't be long until she's forgotten she ever did it. :')

good for her!! I've often wondered what will become of my 7th month olds teeth. He is our only 'sucker' of anything and as it turns out, he's found what your lil one has left behind.....the thumb! :)
I've asked other mothers of thumb suckers if their kids' teeth were in danger after thumb sucking and they've answered no. What was your dentits comments about it?

Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep that in mind as my lil 7 month old keeps attached to his thumb. I suppose part of it could be hereditary as well. Oh well, I can't just pull that cute thumb out of his mouth at this point, I mean it's so cute -- but its not cute at 2, 3, and 4........maybe a band-aid would work :-P

Absolutely. This is a growing time for her and it sounds like she is handling it well. What a mature young lady.
And I think you are probably correct, when it's your own child, it's still cute. But since I havent experienced that, Zane being my first appendage sucker, when I see older kids still sucking on their dirty fingers -- ewww, gives me the willy's! :) But perhaps that will change if Mr. Zane continues with his sucker friend.
Thanks for the giggle!

What a cutie!

My Harrison has sucked his thumb, but has never had problems with his teeth. He's 7 and still falls asleep with it in his mouth, but it comes out immediately when he falls asleep. He doesn't suck it all during the day. That stopped around age 3 or 4.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I'm impressed she gave up sucking her thumb so easily. My youngest gave up her pacifer a few months back, and I was the only one who had difficulty with it.
