Simpler Times

For many years I have longed for simpler times.  My husband and I actually purchased a canvas print called "Simpler Times I" by Thomas Kincade just a couple of years into our marriage.  Funny thing is we bought it on credit.  We wanted life to be simple, but apparently we didn't quite know how to get there.

Over the years of our marriage, we have made mistakes, and taken wrong turns on our quest to reach a simple lifestyle.  Actually, we had the wrong idea of what constituted simplicity, therefore making it impossible to attain.  Our ideas were formed by looking at what is normal, and if you listen to Dave, you know normal is broke.  Life is not simple when you are broke.  Especially if you're broke and in debt as we were.

At the beginning of the year, we decided enough was enough.  We no longer wanted to own our home - it was a money pit.  We were looking for the most inexpensive way to live - "the RV experiment".

Turns out, this was a costly mistake.  What we should have done is wait on the Lord, and stop trying to make things happen. (We purchased this before we sold our home  more debt!)

Just weeks before our house sold, we were offered this -

We rent this beautiful place for less than you can get a small apartment.  Plus many, many acres to enjoy.

This is the beginning of simplicity.

Given the current state of the economy, our arrival to simpler times has occured at an excellent time.  Of course all glory be to our Soverign God.

Now, we need to learn how to garden, get some hens, and maybe a milking cow??? Are you serious Julie

I have so many other things I'd like to tell everyone about like how much I enjoy fall, how well Luke is doing in football, and the books I'm reading.  But, I'm spending a lot of time enjoying the fall, watching Luke play football, and reading books

Corey

Just so you know. Having a milk cow is awesome and not as hard as you may think. Starting out with a goat may help ease you into it.

Hi Corey! I must say I've enjoyed visiting here these last seven months. It's always encouraging to see how God is working in other peoples lives and I must say He's really showed through here. Thanks for your transparency and sharing with the rest of us.
Yes, I'm serious about the cow :-). We will probably purchase it as a newborn next May so that one of the girls can enter it in the 4H Bucket Calf Program (make a little money off of it as a baby). Hopefully one of them will continue to show it in livestock shows as it grows older. Tim will have her artificially insiminated (he is a licensed vet) at a strategic time so that she will produce a calf that we can use as a future bucket calf too. One of Tim's selling points on this whole idea is to use a mechanical milker as I'm not sure I could actually do it myself. Oh well it's all still in the works, it will be interesting to see what will happen :-). I have never tasted raw milk, is it really that different?
Blessings, Julie

it looks very peaceful. We too are looking for ways to simplify our lives. We got rid of TV and it's made a difference. We are looking into other ways to quiet down the pace too.

Simple is good! I'm hoping to get chickens in a couple of years and maybe even a cow!

What a great read! I'm glad that you have learned through this last year to wait on His leading -- and isnt it a wonderful thing that when we don't do it His way, He is always there to pick us up and help us out of our mistakes. Praise the Lord!

I love the house! Wow! It sounds like you guys are headed in the right direction. My husband and I went through FPU (Dave Ramsey) a couple of years ago, and it has changed our lives so much! If only our country as a whole would embrace the life style, things would be so much better. My husband teaches the class now, and it floors me to see just how many people have their finances all messed up! It doesn't matter if they have large or small incomes. It is all about decision making and living for Him or ourselves. We have become such a materialistic culture.
