Cathy asked if the house on my avatar is ours and if I had any other thoughts on things we contract to others....
Yes, that's where we live, but it's not our house. The owner is our realtor that sold our last house and she and her husband needed a renter they could trust not to destroy it so they asked us to live here for practically nothing! We are so blessed to be able to live in such a neat place.
As far as your question about things we sub-contract to others, I was definately thinking about education and childcare (not us in that instance), but examining other areas as well. My duties as a mom are changing now as I no longer have a toddler in the house and I have a bit more time on my hands than I'm used to. I want to make sure I'm using that time in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.
So here is a question for all who read this: What do you think are some areas that we need to stop sub-contracting? Things that may be obvious to you may be easily overlooked by me, so please share your thoughts.

- Clothing. I make a large amount of my daughters' and my own clothing: Dresses, skirts, nighties, bloomies, slips. And my husband's and son's pajama bottoms. It really does save a lot of money, especially when I hit fabric sales.
- The growing of our food. We try to grow as much as we can in our garden, as well as hunting for and raising our own meat. We haven't bought red meat at the store in about 9 years and we haven't bought any meat at all in the last 3 months.
- Preserving our food. Whether home grown or store-bought fruits and veggies I try to do all the freezing and canning myself instead of buying canned or frozen fruits and veggies at the store.
- Making our own herbal medicines instead of buying them pre-made or buying traditional OTC meds.
- Cutting our own firewood (from standing tree all the way to into our fireplace).
That's all I can think of right now. Wow, I'm kind of surprised at how many I could come up with. Fun game!
