"Folk" Tales

Finally a New Entry!!

--  For all of my thousands  of loyal blog readers who are tired of clicking on here to find the title "Mondays", this entry is for you!! (Mom)

--  Many new (to us) and exciting things are happening here on our little farm.  We planted a small garden using the "by the foot" method.  We used chicken poo for fertilizer.  This being our first attempt at growing anything edible, the results have been pleasant, but not magnificent.

The layout - the kids have been a great help!

  The first edible evidence

--  We also have little watermelon and canteloupe starting to grow and the butterbeans should do well.  The tomatoes are not doing as well as I'd hoped, and the chickens ate the corn.  - More on those little buggars later!

--  I don't have a current picture of the garden, mostly because I'm embarrassed of how weedy it looks.  I'll work on that and show you soon.

--  The chickens.... well, what do I say about the chickens?  These gals have access to over 100 acres of pasture, yet choose to peck and dig and poo in the yard instead.  "Watch your step" is a common phrase around here.  They took care of my strawberry plants one afternoon and only left the stems.

--  We have a designated hen house with nesting boxes that the nice girls use, but have found several chicken-made nests around the house.  One of them had EIGHT eggs in it.  It's an egg hunt around here daily!  Again, "Watch your step!"

--  However, I can't complain too much because these ladies have been giving us around two dozen eggs a day lately.

--  I love the variation of shapes, sizes and colors.  It's diffucult to see in these pics, but the lighter color eggs are actually blue and green!

--  On a sad note, we had to get rid of Breaker.  He was our rooster and pet.  The problem was, he was starting to chase Julia - or anyone under four feet tall.  It was cute the first time, but when our little niece and nephew came to visit it was quite scary.  He would fly up and put his feet in front of himself trying to spur them.  The young man that picked him up said he would "let 'em out on tha farm".  But, for all I know Breaker was dinner :(

--  Really sad that Julia cried and still says she wants to go get him back.

Breaker

--  Ok, stop crying.  I've got some better news.  The pasture has some new guests.  A mommy and daughter set of donkeys.  They are really sweet and even come to the fence and allow us to pet them.  The cows don't do that, they run away if you look at them!

--  Lastly, a picture of Julia and my niece Trinity.  They caught a couple of chickens!

--  I promise all my fans (Mom), that I will try to blog more often and keep you informed of what's happening at our humble abode.

Corey

Yeah, my buddy, Farmer Corey is back!!! Glad to see all is well with you all on the farm. I wish our garden was producing, but it's been a tough spring for us up here - cool & dry mostly - the seeds are just sitting in the ground waiting for a better day. Your produce looks yummy!

Yes, eggs don't photograph well, they never look as big or as colorful as they really are - what do you do with 2 doz. eggs a day (let's see, that's 168 eggs a week, lol).

I'm sorry to hear that your rooster didn't work out - you just never know about those guys, one time you can have a sweetie and the next one can be a little devil. Yeah, you don't want a mean one around children. The donkey's are cute though - you are really getting into this farming thing, aren't you? lol Donkeys make good watch dogs. So are these donkeys mini's? They look rather short in the photo. Can the kids rid the mama?

So nice to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by to let me know that you have returned. Keep us posted on what other exciting adventures are happening with you. :)

Glad to see you back! You have really been busy. WOW!

You asked about the babe, so . . . Everything's going fine as far as we can tell. The ultrasound to find out gender (oh, and whether the baby's healthy) will be July 2nd. Our congregation is on pins and needles. They're worse than the grandmas! :)

I'm starting to feel a little better. Now instead of having the whole day be awful, I just have to get to 10 am. Then the rest of the day goes pretty well.

I'll post again in the next few days, but since you were so sweet to ask, I thought I'd let you know early. ;)

Your farm looks so beautiful, and you all look so happy! When I look back at where we both were a year or so ago, it just makes me shake my head and wipe my eyes. God's so good at meeting our needs!

Have fun hunting eggs!

Oh Corey as I'm trying to comment here I have two kiddos bickerring over who's turn it is to look at the Rainbow Resource catalog (only in a homeschooling household).
Okay, first of all your egglayers are awesome! Sorry about the strawberry plants...I would have been tempted to drop kick a couple of the ladies...just bein honest, sorry. The garden must be a success if you're getting lettuce that looks like that! This is my first year to plant lettuce and it's still itty bitty. Oh well we have snow peas producin out the wazoo right now and soon beans too.
I'm so proud of you! Chickens, a garden, you've become quite the country dweller.
Yes, Corey, you are right, we do have a more laid back approach to school. We get it done but just at a more relaxed speed. Some days it may be just math with lots of nature walks and playing outdoors, while others it's math, language arts, spelling, science, and an experiment, with reading aloud. It varies.
Hope your summer is off to a wonderful start and enjoy your garden and chickens (I may have some soon).
Blessings, Julie

Please do keep posting! It was pleasant to read and I loved the pictures!!! I grew up with chickens and have many memories of them. Where we live now, we can't have them so it's great to see some, somewhere else :0)

Jun. 22, 2009 - Very cool

Very cool on all your summer adventures and on your garden. Those square foot gardens are pretty cool. I'd love to see a picture of it full of vegies. It makes me long for more Southern weather. We mainly harvest in August. And we'll be very lucky if we get an edible Watermelon or Canteloupe at all (although I'm trying this year in my greenhouse so that might be good).

What cute pictures of the kids with the chickens. And, also, what a neat Donkey. I hope you keep enjoying your summer and enjoy your new floaty toy.
