Oct. 28, 2005 - Our Wonderful Chickens!!

Well here they are!!  All 27 chickens.  Sorry I can't get them all in one photo so I posted several pictures.

DSC02850 DSC02845 DSC02884 We have several different breeds. They all are brown egg layers. Right now we are getting about 15 to 19 eggs a day. Yummy eggs!! If you never had fresh eggs, you do not know what you are missing. I never liked eggs as they were always stale and rubbery. Now I love eggs!! So tasty and yummy!! My dh built the coop. I will post some pictures of the kids painting the coop. The chickens are considered free range in a sense that they are not caged and have more than enough room to walk and free to go inside or outside the coop. Next year we are planning on having them go free on our property. We are not comfortable with them doing that yet as they are in their first year. Also this coop is a Chicken Tractor. We move the coop all over our property which gives the chickens fresh grass to eat. They get all excited when they see us coming out there getting ready to move them. Enjoy!! Holly

Holly, Love seeing your chickens! Looks like we have a few of the same -- Rhode Island Reds (or is that Red Sex Link? I have both) and Plymouth Barred Rocks. My favorite of ours is the Americauna/Araucanas. They are very different colored, very sweet - one of them makes a terrific mother - and lay green/blue eggs (full size!). Always a conversation starter, for sure!

We let our roam around the yard, but do wait until they are full grown. Even the teenagers get taken by hawks or bothered by dogs. The grown ones don't seem to attract anything mean, except our Cocker Spaniel's incessant teasing.

I put up photos of our newest chickie babies on my other blog, http://keepingthehome.blogspot.com

We have one Rhode Island Red. I will have to check with my dh about the other one. I think it is Red Star. Maybe he will post what they are if he comes by.

A friend of ours have Arucanas. I was flabbergasted over the blue/green eggs. I made a joke about the Green Eggs and Ham story. They laughed and said everybody said that when they first see their eggs.

I will check out your blog pictures of the chickens. I did read about the hatchings on your homeschoolblogger blog. My boys want us to rent a rooster so we can get baby chicks!! I am not sure about that. We will wait and see.

We got these chickens in the Spring of this year so they are very young still. They held their ground with the cat and succeeded in teaching the cat a lesson.

Did you see the Turken?? or you may know it as Naked Neck? We felt bad for that one because we thought it was pecked during shipping then we found out it was a Turken.

Blessings~

We have about 14 chickens. Right now my dd who feeds the animals tells us there are no eggs. Hmmm you are getting quite a few. I thought it was because it was getting cold. I will need to go out and get to the bottom of this. We may have to play the hide and seek game and try to locate what part of the barn they may be laying in. We got three new chicks born this spring. That was pretty exciting -- our first experience with chicks from our own eggs.
Blessings,
Maria
