Starting FIAR Today!

I'm creating this blog as a place for us to record our "Five In A Row" unit studies.  I felt like having a place just for these entries would make it a good resource for other moms using FIAR.

I hope to include daily summaries for each story that we "row", including pictures, lapbooks, and recipes that we use.  I will provide links to resources that we find on the web for each story.  I'm also going to use basic templates for this blog, and probably change them each week to suit the current story.  This week I will be using the "Colored Pencils" template since that is the art medium used in the illustrations of the first book.

Today is our first day using FIAR and we are very excited!  We are starting with the first book in Volume 1, The Story About Ping by Marjorie Flack and illustrated by Kurt Wiese.

The basis of "Five In A Row" is children's literature.  There is a different children's book for each week and activity suggestions in 5 different subjects to go along with the story:  Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, Math, and Art.  Plus, there is a Bible curriculum supplement that provides bible verses and character lessons to go along with the book.  There is also a FIAR cookbook that gives recipes to go along with each story, so on Fridays we will be cooking and eating a meal related to our book.  I will be adding Saxon Math K, basic readers, and some fun workbooks for logic and thinking skills to the curriculum, plus we will be working our way through the book Leading Little Ones To God by Marian M. Schoolland.

Some links for more info and resources for FIAR:

Five In A Row - official website

Homeschool Share - homeschool moms share their unit studies

MrDonn.org - search here for free lesson plans for some of the FIAR books

FIAR Circle - photos and lapbooks

That'll get you started.  I'm excited to be starting this with my son who is 6 and in the first grade.  He loves books and I think this will be a great way to spend our first "official" year of homeschool!  And I can't wait to share it with all of you!

Sep. 28, 2006 - We are rowing too!

Posted by Hagertroops7

This is awesome! I used FIAR a little with my daughter several years ago, but this year we are into it full-swing for Kindergarten with my 5-year-old. The first week was Make Way for Ducklings, then Ferdinand, and now Storm in the Night. I am lapbooking his work and intend to blog about what we've done...
If I can remember how to use trackbacks I'll do some of that with your sight.
Happy rowing!

OK, I was out of the loop on this one. I just checked and trackbacks no longer exist. http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4547#4547
I'll still link your sight when I do post about our rowing experiences!
Blessings!
