Sadly leaving...

Over the last week, we lost our computer due to a virus.  After several days, we were able to wipe it out and a computer guy at hubby's work got it back up and running for us.  Although it is wonderful to have it back, I realized over those several days how nice it was to NOT have the internet!  It freed up so much time to do other things that I had been putting off!  I planted a strawberry patch, learned to make bread, sewed my daughter a dress, refinished an old chalkboard that we got for free from a church that was closing down, went yardsaling, did 8 loads of laundry (!!!), played hard with my kids, planned out a space in our yard for chickens and researched buying and taking care of them, took 2 field trips (FUN!), read a couple books, and cleaned my house practically top to bottom!  Not to mention the extra time spent with my hubby after the kids went to bed and the hours I spent studying God's Word and praying.  A huge change came over me during this time and I realized how I have neglected other things.

It's because of this that I have decided to cancel my internet account, and subsequently close down my HSB blog.  This is a sad decision for me, but I realized it's the best decision for myself, my family and my home.  I will still be checking email and doing a little browsing at the library, but it will only be once a week due to the distance from my home.  I hope to keep in touch with as many of you as I can, I have made some wonderful friendships here over the past year.  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and for allowing me to share my life with you!

Please email me if you would like to stay in touch with me:  rsbrbsbush@hotmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you...I can assure you I will still be a frequent visitor to your blogs on HSB!

Sincerely,

Brandi

P.S.  If any of you have been following my recent entries and would like an update, here is the latest:  We have decided to stay in this home for a little while longer until we feel God's hand clearly guiding us in another direction.  DH has some job prospects that he is pursuing.  This, of course, makes me very happy!  :0)

New Beginnings...

Posted in Living In A Small Town • Apr. 26, 2007

Spring is definitely my favorite time of the year.  I wait, usually impatiently, every year for the first morning that I wake up to the sound of birds singing.  That morning came this past week and it was the sweetest moment!  I also look forward to our owls returning each spring and the buds flowering on the trees.  My lilies that my neighbors planted last year are so tall already and they are spreading out and filling my flower beds.  How refreshing after a long winter!

This spring brings some sadness, though.  The thought of this possibly being the last spring that I spend in this home is so heartbreaking to me.  This will truly be a year of new beginnings for me and my family.  It's bittersweet.

I'm emotional this morning...We spent last evening with a lot of the families in town cleaning a local park and then roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over an open fire.  It's the sort of thing that I love so much about this small town and probably what I'll miss the most.  To start over in a new place...again...after falling in love with this home and this town...sometimes it's too much and I have to place my full trust in God.  I can't even begin to know the blessings he has for us in another place and I know He'll lead us where we can serve His purposes best.

Please continue to pray for my family and especially my husband as he searches for a job and as he makes some tough decisions.  He is feeling the pressure of having to do what is best for his family and he struggles with not knowing where God is leading us.  Please pray that we will have the faith and the patience that we need to wait for God's will.

Update and prayer request

Please excuse my absence here of late.  As hard as I try to get back to my blog, I've found it difficult to find even a moment in my day to do so.  And, much to my dismay, I have not been able to keep up with any of my HSB friends' blogs either.

Things have been a little chaotic, a little crazy, a little confusing.  Big changes are happening in my life and I don't think I've been handing it all over to the One who already knows His plans for me and my family.  I don't function well when I feel "in-between" and don't have a clear plan for the future.

Recently, we finished our basement and were finally able to "stretch out" a little.  We added a den/playroom, an office/sewing room, and an exercise room, not to mention clearing out our laundry room of "stuff" so I can finally get to the dryer without having to step over all of my husbands tools.  We moved my son to the attic room, previously the office/junk room and my little girl has his old room that they used to share.  Plus, the new den allowed us to clear out the upstairs living room so we now have a great formal living/dining area for guests.  It's been so wonderful and I can't imagine a more perfect home!  Everything has a place, there's actually room for every activity that we do, and I just love it here more than anywhere else I've ever been (and that's saying a lot considering we have moved 7 times in the last 9 years!).

That being said, as soon as we settled in, my dear husband decided he wanted to get out of the military and move back to FL.  Now, let me tell you...I'm not real good at the "submission" thing, although I am working on it.  I do believe that he will do what is right for our family and that God will lead him.  But for the last few weeks, I have been so conflicted!  I love it here so much, it has become "home" for me and the kids and I just can't imagine walking out of this house for the last time and driving out of our little town for the last time and knowing that we're not coming back.  It breaks my heart and the thought just makes me cry.

To make things worse, he keeps changing his mind.  One day he wants to go to FL, the next day it's VA, the next day it's WV, the next day it's FL again, then he wants to stay here, then he wants PA, then it's back to FL, then it's maybe CO?, then it's here again...I'm telling you, each day when I call him at work, I wonder which direction he's headed in today.  I can't tell you how difficult this is.  To place your life and your future into the hands of someone else, and then not have the slightest idea what he's thinking from moment to moment!  It's really heart-wrenching and I have had to pray each morning for the Lord to take the burden.

I admit, I'm strong-willed and I tend to take over.  It's definitely one of my biggest flaws, especially when it comes to my marriage.  So it's difficult for me to trust, in my husband and in God.  I'm making a huge effort to hand it over, to not allow anxiousness to take over, to place this all in the Lord's hands and not allow it to take over.  I know that God is already at work in this situation, he already has a job for my husband, a home for us (even if it's not this one), and our entire future is already planned.

Homeschooling has suffered, although "un-schooling" has been amazing and I must say, my son has really taken things into his own hands and has really thrived doing his own thing everyday.  It's amazing how children love to learn, even without the structure of a curriculum or schedule.

I have seen God's hand on this.  Please say a little prayer for my family if you remember, especially for my husband as he deals with making these major decisions.  He only wants to do what's best for us.

Thank you all for still checking in on my blog, even though I haven't been very faithful in keeping it up!  I will try to keep you all updated and I hope to find the time to check in on some of you over the next couple of days!

Quick update

Hi!  I just thought I would drop in real quick and let anyone who still stops by here know that I am still alove and well!  I know it's been awhile, we've just been so busy around here!  We're just about done finishing our basement - carpet comes tomorrow and we should be moving furniture this weekend!  Plus, my hubby went on a 3 week TDY so I was "single-momming" it for awhile.  That's gotta be the hardest job in the world!  :0)

Here are the long ago promised pictures of our vacation to Florida in January.  Please excuse the mess, they were taken as we were packing and cleaning on the last day...talk about waiting until the last minute!  :0)

Living Room with Fireplace

Sunroom facing the ocean

The house, complete with hot tub - we spent many hours on the back porch!

Dining Room - very tropical

Beautiful kitchen - I even had a dishwasher for a week!  :0)

There were 4 bedrooms, this was ours - it looked out over the ocean, so we woke up to the sound of waves every morning!

Our PRIVATE pool - just for us!

Our backyard for the week - heavenly!

Beautiful scenery in our yard

That's the sliver of moon in the middle above the tree - the photo just doesn't do justice to the way it really looked that night!  Gorgeous!

We had such a wonderful, much needed trip!  In the mornings, there was a pod of dolphins that would "fish" right behind our house and we saw a manatee at the marina where my dad works.  We got to see my family, my in-laws, my great uncle and his wife and many other people we hadn't seen in ages.  It was really an incredible vacation.

Then reality hit and we had to come back home!  :0)  Oh well, all good things must come to an end sometime, I suppose!

I hope this finds you all doing well!  It's about time to wrap up another school year.  I'll have to stop by your blogs to see how everyone has been doing!  And I hope to not be a stranger around here anymore!

XOXOXO

Yes, it's me...can you believe it?

GOOD MORNING!

Wow, can you believe that I am actually posting on my blog?  I feel like a stranger in a strange land!  I just haven't had the time...or to be honest, the desire...to blog lately!  In fact, I thought about closing this space down, but I just can't bear to do it.  In the words of my dear friend Heidi, "It's just too much fun!"

The baby has gone back to bed...for a time, although I don't know how long that will be.  In fact, I think I might already hear my son getting her up again.  Oh well, I've made a quick appearance.  I'll have to try again later!

I have been using bloglines to try to catch up with some of you.  I will try to comment on some of your blogs later today.

Please visit Katie's blog at TeamBettendorf and read the recent posts about her little girl, Jillian.  She needs immediate and focused prayer!  Please add this family to your prayer list!

I am officially removing any and all info on my sidebar pertaining to the My Body, His Temple Weight Loss Challenge.  Thank you for all who went along on this journey with me.  It was not as successful as I had hoped.  I did lose 20 pounds, but with the holidays and a month-long road trip, I have since put about 10 back on!  Why is it so hard?  Anyway, back to the drawing board.  I think in the future I'll stick to short term contests...it really puttered out there in the end!  I didn't have any entries at all for the last couple of months.  Six months is a long time to committ to something, but I hope it was a little bit of encouragement to those of you who participated!

I'll be back later...hopefully with pictures!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!  Kiss your Sweeties today!

Did you think I dropped off the face of the earth?

We've returned from our month on the road and I'm finally caught up enough on everything to spend a few minutes online!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! I need to write back to several of you who have sent me messages. Please be patient with me! I'm going crazy trying to do everything that needs to be done this week, but I promise I'll write to you all before the weekend! :0)

We had an amazing trip. We went to PA first and got to see family and friends that we haven't seen in years! It was really great to get caught up. I'm sorry I didn't get to see all of you, but we ran out of time at the end of our trip and missed out on seeing everyone we wanted to. Hopefully we'll be back again this year!

In Florida, we stayed in an amazing house right on Fort Myers Beach. The water was about 50 feet behind the house and we woke up every morning to the sound of the waves. We had a hot tub under 2 palm trees right by the water and a private pool! We went out on my parents boat, went surf fishing, walked on the beach, and ate out more times than I care to remember! We spent every night on the back porch listening to the water and playing cards. Needless to say, we were spoiled!

I was even able to get the baby sleeping through the night in her own crib!  Wow!  That was quite a feat during a road trip, and I'm glad to say that it has stuck even after getting back home.  Yeah!

My sister's wedding was absolutely perfect! She was so beautiful! I am so proud of her for the choices she has made in her life and I know she and Eric will have an amazing life together! It was so wonderful to be a part of their special day. Thank you, Haley! XOXOX

I'll post a few pics of the trip and the wedding soon. Now it's back to real life! School started back up for us on Monday and things have been going well.  We are really focusing each day and getting most of our work done before lunch.  It's been wonderful to have the afternoons free!

I hope 2007 has had a good start for all of you!  I hope to get back in touch with you all soon, as soon as I figure out how to get bloglines working for me!  Is HSB going to give us our friends list back or do we need to rely on an outside source for now on?  Just when I figured out what I was doing, they had to change it on me!  ;0)

November...what happened?

Wow!  I really don't know where the last month went!  I have been so busy with other "endeavors" and just haven't been blogging like I want to!  My mom must be sooooo anxious for new pictures of the kids!  So, here's some for you, Mom!

I thought I'd give a quick update on some things I'm working on.  I feel a bit overwhelmed lately...but I like it!  I would rather be busy than stagnant...that's when depression sets in for me, so I always have to have something new going on!

Homeschool

We've been off since Thanksgiving for the holiday break.  I like to take 2 months off at the holidays so we can just enjoy things and participate in all the "extras" that seem to pop up all over the place!

We will be officially starting back up again on January 22nd, after we return from a 3 week vacation to the East Coast.  I'm going pretty eclectic with our curriculum next year and I've been working on organizing each subject and setting up a schedule.  I hope to be a lot more consistent and effective next year!

Homelife

I've been feeling chaotic and unorganized, so I decided to return to using my Control Journal.  I decided to revamp it and include more sections, so I've been working on getting that put together.  I'll share it all with you when I'm done!

My hubby is getting close to finishing the basement.  All the dry wall is up and half of it has been mudded.  As soon as he's done with the other half, we can primer, paint, and have carpet put in!  I'm so excited!  It will give us a den, a school/craft room, a guest room with a huge walk-in storage closet, and a finished laundry room with a food storage closet and eventually, we will also put a bathroom in there!  The upsatirs living room will become our formal living and dining.  We're going to rip out the carpet and have someone come in and finish the original hardwood floors.  We're going to enlarge the current bathroom by knocking out a hall closet and expanding it into that space.  The kids will get the two bedrooms on the main level and we will expand the attic room, making it a master suite complete with bathroom, walk-in closet, and sitting area.  Plus, we're adding an island into the kitchen with stools on one side and an above the stove microwave (yeah, more counter space!), and we are thinking about knocking out a doorway into the formal living space so that the house flows better.

This started out as a very small house, but it's about to more than double and meet our needs perfectly!  Praise God!

The Kids

DS just started a gymnastics class last night.  He loved it!  The facility is wonderful and his coach is very nice.  We are so glad to have a physical outlet for him and he did a great job!  She said he is very strong and will catch onto the basics quickly.  He is, of course, anxiously awaiting Christmas and is counting down the days with the assistance of a construction paper chain.  Every day we get numerous updates as to how many days are left!  LOL

DD is growing so fast and doing new things every day.  She is 7 months old now, and in the last month, she developed 2 teeth, sat up for the first time, said "Dada" and "Mama", started eating solid food, and started scooting across the floor.  Then, 2 days ago, she got her knees up under her and started crawling...she crawled straight over to a box of books and pulled herself up into a standing position!!!  What?  Isn't there supposed to be a little more time before that happens?  I know my son didn't do that this early!  She's excited about Christmas, too...well, the presents at least!  I can't keep her away from them!

Holidays

Thanksgiving was wonderful!  We stayed home, played games with the kids, watched a lot of football, cooked all day long, and then ate, ate, and ate some more!

Now, on to Christmas.  I'm not as organized this year as I normally am.  I'm almost done with my shopping and wrapping and we have our tree up.  But I haven't even started my cards, I don't have boxes packed up and ready to send out, I don't have any baking planned, I haven't made any of our neighbor's gifts, and we don't have any outside lights up yet!  Wow, I better get on the ball!

Miscellaneous

I have a very exciting business venture in the works.  I am currently working on research and a business plan so I can get financing.  I promise I will fill you all in on it as soon as it's a little more concrete.  I could really use your prayers in this matter!

I think that's all for now!  I hope that catches everyone up a bit.  I hope I haven't lost all my friends and readers!  If you're still here, thanks for sticking around...can't wait to get caught up with all of you!

Snap out of it!

Could it really be so long since my last post?  Wow!  What happened to the last 10 days?  I think I went on a hiatus...

Anyway, I'm back and it's almost 11:00 am here...where am I?...sitting at my dining room table in my PJ's catching up online...my blinds are down, it's cold outside, and it's just a bleary, dreary day...kind of like the last 10 days!

I can't let the winter blahs take over, already...it's not even Thanksgiving!

Okay...it's time to snap out of it.  My son has been sick, but he's feeling better this morning.  It's time to open the blinds, let some remnants of light into this house, get dressed, make the bed that I just crawled out of (it was a long, cuddly morning with the kids), and crack the books!  Time to get back on track!

I just can't believe how fast time is flying!  My baby girl has had so many milestones in the past week:

She cut her first tooth - OUCH!  :0)

She said her first word - Da Da!

She is sitting for several minutes on her own...

(although she has yet to roll from back to tummy!)

My son enjoyed trick-or-treating immensely.  We went with some friends and we drove to all the houses since it was 24 degrees outside!  The baby slept through the whole thing!  DS came home with enough candy to fill a grocery store aisle!  This is the benefit of living in an extremely small town...there aren't many trick-or-treaters, so the ones that come around get EXTRA!!!

Now, the real trick is keeping my hands out of his candy!  :0)

My kids are such a joy to me every day!

Yes, I live in Utah.  No, I'm not Mormon!

I get asked this question all the time!  Since we do not belong to the LDS church, some of the items above do not apply to me, but by virtue of living here, I've come to understand them and can relate in one way or another to each one!

Funny story:  One of the above says: "Your family considers a trip to McDonald's a night out...".  One night, we drove 20 miles south to get to the nearest Wendy's for dinner.  The sweet boy behind the counter came out to talk to us, as we were the only ones in the restaurant that night.  When he asked where we were from, we told him "(our town), about 20 minutes from here".  He said, "Wow!  This must be a special occasion or something!  Are you celebrating?"

So funny!  I guess I didn't realize that a night out to Wendy's was so special!

I have grown to LOVE Utah and the people here and I'm proud to call it "home"!

P.S.  Our driveway DOES have a minivan and a pick up truck, and since we live so close to Idaho, I've had people ask me if I can get them lottery tickets!  LOL!!!

I love getting presents in the mail!

Today, I received the most beautiful afghan for my baby girl from Christina (quietcajun) over at The Perils of Parenting!  I'm telling you, this girl is talented!  This is the softest and fluffiest baby blanket I have ever felt!  I just can't figure out how she has time to do this with 5 kids!

The colors match perfectly with her nursery!  She also sent a sweet note with a picture of herself and one of her family.  What a beautiful family she has!

Isn't it amazing the wonderful friendships that can be forged in "Blogland"?  I feel so blessed!

Thank you so much, Christina!  It is beautiful!

Homeschool Blessings

Posted in Homeschooling In General • Oct. 29, 2006

We always say a prayer for our day, for our families, and for Daddy at work before we begin our academics every day.  DS holds my hand and closes his eyes and is so respectful.  He is really starting to understand the importance of having a prayer life and has started saying more in depth prayers at bedtime.  He is such a blessing!

And I feel so blessed that God has given me this ministry, to be at home with my children and teach them to put God first in their lives.  The moments I share with them during the day could never be replaced, and it saddens me to think of the millions of children that are away from their mothers during the day, learning and being influenced by teachers and peers who probably don't share their families' values.

I'm reading a devotional book called Seasons Of A Mother's Heart by Sally Clarkson.  I wanted to share something I read today:

"A seed is useless until it is cast into the soil where it will die in order to become something greater - a plant, a flower, a tree.  My dedication to life at home as a mother is a seed of sacrifice.  I give up my own desires and sacrifice my gifts and talents so that new life will come from me.  I am buried in the rich soil of housework, homeschooling, character training, disciplining and all the myriad responsiblilities of making a home.  To many in my generation, my decision to stay at home is a fruitless sacrifice, a waste of feminine intelligence and abilities.  To me, though, it is a small sacrifice if by it I can send my children into the next generation bursting with spiritual life, ready to change their world for Christ.  Fruitless?  Only by the world's standards.  By God's it is a fruitful sacrifice that will yield a harvest of righteousness."  pg.27

"The decision to homeschool will, by its nature, create division.  To those who choose to put their children in public school, your decision to homeschool is a passive condemnation of their lifestyle.  Since homeschooling rejects the educational status quo, it invites criticism and rejection, not just for us as adults but also for our children.  Family members, church members, friends, and even strangers will question your decision and scrutinize your life.  I am finding that only heart-deep dedication and sacrifice enables me to confidently say, "This is right...this is what God wants me to do...this is worth it."  Because I know that doing God's will is worth whatever the cost may be."  pg. 28

I have never felt more in the center of God's will than I do right now, being home with my children, being a full-time mom, wife, and homeschooler!  I see my children growing in grace and truth, being unaffected by the outside world, and it brings me such joy.  My family thrives on this lifestyle and we are bringing glory to God, by being "in this world, but not of it"!

No one in our life has said outright, "We are against homeschooling!".  However, we have had people elude to this fact through other round-about ways.  I have been "reminded" time and time again, by well-meaning loved ones and friends, that I should make sure my kids have proper socialization.  I find this funny, as if I have not considered this myself and desire to keep my children "cooped up" in the house with no interaction with the outside world.  I actually consider this an insult to my parenting skills more than an insult to homeschooling.  As a mother, I desire nothing more than to prepare my children for "real life".  I consider homeschooling to be the absolute best lesson in socialization.  My children have the opportunity to live real life!  I find it humorous that the general population believes public school is proper socialization!  The last thing a child needs is to be stuck in a room with 30 other children of the same age, being forced to "conform", walk quietly in straight lines, control their bladders until the scheduled "bathroom break", and never ask genuine questions of interest because their teacher has no time to answer them!  Is this how "real life" works?  Not outside the public school system!  How is this a preparation for life after school?  It's not!

It's even been suggested to me that a stay-at-home mom's life must be so boring!  Boring?!  Anyone who thinks this has never been a stay-at-home mom!  I think some people even think I must resent my life and envy those women who have an outside career and get a break from their children each day.  Children are God's greatest blessings!  I can think of no better place in this world than right here with these children!  God gave them to me with this command:

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."  Deuteronomy 6:5-9

God gave these children to me and my husband, to train up in His teachings!  He did not say, "I am giving these children to you so that at the age of 5 you can send them into the hands of the government to spend each day in a place where they will not allow My Name, to learn hundreds of things that go directly against My Word!  I want them to learn about life from other kids their age, who have learned that it's okay to be vulgar, violent, and disrespectful because 'kids will be kids'."

No, he did not give them to us so that we could pass the responsibility of raising them onto "the world", so we could give them over to teachers and peers who care nothing about their hearts or their spirit.  He gave them to us for a reason!  We love them, just as He loves us!  We know them heart and soul!  We truly have their best interest in mind.  We want to develop a whole person...mind, body, and soul...not just a student who can rattle off the correct answers on a standardized test, only to forget them the next day, in the name of "education".

This is why we homeschool.  This is why my children will never go to a public school.  Never.  We will carry this lifestyle through high school.  And my children will be well-adjusted, well-educated, and excellent citizens of this world as a result.

I thank God every day for calling me to homeschool!!!

Art Gallery

Posted in Projects • Oct. 19, 2006

Are you all sick of me and my pictures yet?

Well, I have some more to post today.  As part of my de-cluttering project, I decided to get rid of some of my son's artwork.  As a mom, this is a very hard thing to do!  I want to keep everything that he puts his efforts into!  However, considering that he does about 10 new drawing every day, I just can't keep hundreds and hundreds of these papers.  So, he and I sat down to tackle it together.

We chose about 50 of his best drawings (including some from each "stage" of his growth) and filed them neatly into a 3-ring binder.  I did my best to indicate when they had been drawn.

Then, we did the unthinkable...we tossed the rest!  I had a much harder time with this than I did, he was just fine with it!

Then, he decided that he ought to make some "special" drawings on cardstock to make up for all of those that we tossed.  He spent the morning on these and I found some old frames to put them in.  We made an art gallery in his room:

Can you tell he likes SpongeBob?

SpongeBob                              Mr. Crabs

Plankton and Patrick

One of the things that has saved me over the years from having 50 drawings a day has been a Fisher Price Doodle Pro.  He carries it with him all day long and draws on it whenever he has a chance!  This is actually his second one, he completely wore out his first!

This is a man looking in a mirror...pretty creative, huh?

He certainly didn't get his artistic ability from me!

Kids, FIAR, and Autumn

Posted in Motherhood • Oct. 3, 2006

I wanted to post some new pics of the kids that I have taken in recent days.  I thought you all might want to see how big the baby is!  Time is really flying and she will be 5 months old tomorrow!  I can't believe it!

We are really enjoying Five In A Row.  It is the best curriculum we have tried yet, and it's so much fun that we can't help but stay on track!  If you'd like to see what we're doing, click here.  Warning:  My FIAR site is very detailed and has lots of pictures - it's doing double duty as a place for my record-keeping, as well as a place for friends and relatives to keep up with our homeschool activities.

Fall is really settling in around here.  We don't have too many trees in Utah that change color, the mountains are only dotted with the changing leaves, but we are so lucky to have some in our yard that are just beautiful right now!

This one is a Black Walnut, and it drops so many nuts that we can hear them falling when we're sitting out in the yard!  We're careful not to walk under this one!

Here's DS picking some of our last tomatoes.  I'll be pulling these plants out soon to make way for some bulbs I'd like to plant now for the spring.  We'll be moving our vegetable garden to another area of the yard.

It's cold enough overnight that we have to make a fire in the woodstove every morning.  It's so cozy to bundle up after breakfast in front of the fire to do our lessons!  Did I mention yet that we love homeschooling!?

I need a break!

Wow, I'm exhausted!

I decided that I would spend this weekend going through drawers, closets, cabinets, and basement boxes, organizing, donating, and tossing as I go, getting everything in a manageable state so that I don't feel so overwhelmed by all the "stuff" in my house!  I think I bit off more than I could chew...

I now have things spread out in every room, floor to ceiling, wall to wall...I warned DH that it would look worse before it got better!  We live in a house that was built in the 30's and has VERY limited closet space, so this is an added challenge when organizing.

I actually have accomplished a lot.  I went through DD's clothes, packed up things she has already outgrown, unpacked things she can wear now, threw out things that were stained, donated things we didn't like, and set aside things that are still too big...So, she now has a drawer full of fresh, new clothes!  It was like Christmas!

Then, I went through DS's clothes...packed up things he's outgrown, threw away things with holes, donated things he didn't like, and packed away summer clothes that he will still be able to wear next year.  I consolidated all of his clothes - jeans, shirts, pj's, socks, and underwear - into two drawers!  Yeah!

Then, I tackled DH's clothes.  He uses a closet in our hallway that has 4 drawers and hanging space, except that 2 of those drawers were used for linens, meaning that his clothes were CRAMMED in the other two.  Since I was able to eliminate one of DS's drawers, I was able to use that extra drawer in his dresser for sheet sets.  We only have 2 sets for each of the two beds, plus a flannel set for winter, so we don't need much room for those.  Then, I organized the towels into one drawer, leaving DH with 3 drawers for his clothes.  Yeah!  I was able to get all of his pants into one, all of his shirts/sweaters into another, and then all of his military "extras" into the third.  I even had room in the 3rd one for winter hats and gloves!

Then, I went through my drawers, throwing away everything with holes, packing up summer clothes, and re-arranging so that everything is in nice, organized piles.  I found things in there that I haven't seen in 2 years!  Plus, I'm donating all of my size 14's that have recently become too big for me!

Then, I organized all the kids' outgrown clothes and a bunch of baby blankets into space bags, piled those into plastic bins, labeled them and put them aside.  They are now ready to be put into our basement storage room when DH is finished with it.

I also got another box of albums and miscellaneous items cleaned out from the basement.  I found some great photo albums from when DH and I were dating, our honeymoon and first home after we got married, and DS when he was a baby.  We had so much fun going through them!  I hope to do 1 or 2 boxes from the basement everyday until it's finished!

Now, I have to go do my dishes, switch the laundry, vacuum, and clean off my dining room table.  We're finishing off our FIAR The Story About Ping unit tonight with a Chinese dinner and a review session with DH.  I can't wait!

I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend!

New FIAR blog

I'm starting a new blog called Small Town Rowing to document our Five In A Row unit studies.  This will be a place for my record-keeping journal, so it may not be a very interesting read for most of you.  The entries will be long and detailed and will include photos of assignments, projects, and field trips.  That's why I decided to create it as a separate blog.

I hope this will be a good resource for other FIAR families, if you're interested is seeing some of the things we are doing!

In Memory of Buttons

Posted in Motherhood • Sep. 22, 2006

Buttons the Bear:  2001-2006

This has been a very traumatic couple of weeks for our family, especially my 6yo son.  He lost his best friend and lifelong companion at the Houston Airport...his beloved teddy bear, Buttons.

As you can see, he was very well loved!  My son has had Buttons for 5 years.  He has grown up with him.  He slept with him every night and called him his "special sleeping animal" among his other sleeping animals.  He took him everywhere, carrying him by one arm.  His arm tore one day (just like Woody in Toy Story) and we had to fix him right away because he couldn't stand to not have him for even one night.

I know as Moms you must understand the attachment factor here.  Nothing else even came close for him.  Even at the age of 6, when most boys have given up their attachments, my son still held his Buttons as his dearest friend.

And I have an emotional attachment to this bear, too!  This was the one thing that I was going to keep forever as his most treasured childhood keepsake.  Can you believe I'm crying as I write this?  My heart is breaking for my child, because that's what Mom's do when their child's heart is broken.

Now, believe me, I know that there are far worse troubles in this world, and I am so thankful that this is the hardest thing we have had to endure to this point with our child.  He has always been healthy, happy, intelligent, lively, and fun!  We have never had a major trauma in our household.  We feel so blessed to be able to say that!

With that said, Buttons may be "just a teddy bear", but my child's heartache is real.  He has cried himself to sleep almost every night (which means I have also cried with him!).  He wakes up in the morning and spends his first minutes staring at his bedside photo of him and Buttons...and cries some more.

Here's the worst part.  The conversation we had the night before we left for Florida while we were packing:

Me:  Don't forget Buttons.

DS:  I don't want to take him because he might get lost.

Me:  Won't you miss him for the next 2 weeks?  He won't get lost, we'll make sure we keep a good eye on him.

I just can't even tell you how guilty I feel for that fateful conversation.  We arrived at the airport in Houston with a small layover, so I treated him to a magazine and a candy bar.  He was so into his candy bar, that he left Buttons sitting on the chair when they called us to board the plane.  I keep going over it my mind, over and over, and I can't believe we just left him sitting there!

I called the airport's Lost and Found and they did not have him.  I have searched eBay for a duplicate and I think he was a one of a kind because nothing even comes close!

My plea:

Has anyone ever seen a bear like this?  Does anyone know the manufacturer?  I purchased it at a dinner theater gift shop in Fort Myers, Florida.  If anyone has any info on this bear, PLEASE let me know!  I am desperate to find a replacement.

I've learned a really good lesson from this:  Never let your child get too attached to a hard-to-find item!  My daughter's attachment will be something that is mass-produced and easy to find, just in case this situation arises again!

Have any of you dealt with something like this with your children?  How did you handle it and help them move on?

Chocolate Unit Study

Posted in Our Homeschool • Sep. 20, 2006

Let me tell you, this is a very difficult unit study to do when you are on a very strict diet!  But, my son is absolutely loving it and I have not heard him say "Are we done yet?" one time today!

We started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl 3 days ago, so I decided to do a fun unit study while we are waiting for our FIAR books to come.  It wasn't hard to find great stuff on the web!

Here are some really fun things we found and tried out today:

The Field Museum:  Chocolate, The Exhibition

Manufacturing Chocolate From Seed to Sweet (Interactive!)

Hershey Factory Tour:  Video

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Activities

(plus vocab, quizzes, and lesson plans)

Hershey's Virtual Pumpkin Decorator

One of the activities suggested that you create your own candy bar and wrapper.  My son, who is usually full of imagination, decided that there is nothing better than a Hershey bar with almonds, so he drew that!  I couldn't get him to do anything different.  I guess he just wants to leave well enough alone!  Why try to fix something that's not broke?!

Back to routine

Posted in Our Homeschool • Sep. 19, 2006

Well, after a month of an abnormal schedule including 2 vacations and some major home renovations, I think that life is starting to return to "normal"!  I wasn't prepared for the upheaval that the vacations would cause in our life, since both of them were unexpected and pretty much last minute!  And then to top it off, we came home from Florida with no running water and a severely messy house!  (This is what happens when you leave your hubby alone for the week! LOL)

However, the plumbing in our old 30's house has now been completely updated (a good learning experience for hubby) and I have gotten the house back in order (almost, but my vacuum is broke so I'm waiting for a new filter) and we are supposed to be starting back with school today.  We took way too many weeks off and now have A LOT of catching up to do!

I'm taking a break from Weaver.  I think it will work for us after we get our first year under our belt, but I think we need to be "broken in" with something a little less "planning intensive".  Last night, I ordered the entire "Five In A Row" series, including the Bible and Holiday supplements and we will be starting that on Monday.  I've heard wonderful things about this curriculum and can't wait to give it a shot!

I really like that each unit study is based on a children's book.  One of our favorite things right now is reading together, so I think this will be a good step for us.  I decided to get some really fun books for extra read alouds, so we picked up "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "James and the Giant Peach", both by Roald Dahl, as well as "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell.  We started reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" last night and I can tell he's actually listening!  Big improvement!

I took ds to see "How to Eat Fried Worms" in the theater while we were in Florida.  It's a great movie for boys (and anyone who has ever been a boy!).  There is a girl in the movie that keeps saying:  "Boys are soooo weird!"  Wow, I can really relate!  We went in the middle of the day and we ended up having the entire theater to ourselves!  It was wonderful!  I told ds we were special and we got to have a "private viewing"!  He was so excited!

I have to run, but I'll post more about our vacation soon, including some pics.  The kids had a great time and my family was so happy to have us there for a week!  It was the best surprise I've ever pulled off!

Have a great day!

My Surprise

Posted in Motherhood • Sep. 7, 2006

Okay, so my secret is that I flew to Florida yesterday to surprise my parents!  So much fun!  I couldn't say anything, because I was afraid my Mom would read it!

We got in last night around 7:30 and stayed at my sister's house.  We waited until today to surprise them.  My sister set up a lunch date where they were expecting her to show up, but instead of her it was me and my kids!  They were in a state of shock for awhile, we really surprised them!  We haven't seen them in over a year.

I couldn't wait until January for them to see the baby...so, that's my secret!

Off to the county fair!

Woo Hoo!  It's county fair time!  I'm so excited, this is my favorite time of the whole year here in Utah.  We LOVE to go to the livestock auctions, the rodeos, and the Dutch Oven cook-offs.  Plus...it's free!

Today, I'm taking the kids with some friends of ours.  I'm going to try very hard to not eat lunch there, that would just totally negate any workouts I've done in that past 3 days I'm sure!  Besides, I have to save the calories for the yummy samples from the cook-offs tomorrow!

So that's how we'll be spending our weekend!  Fun!

DD woke up early this morning.  She's been teething and having a hard time with it.  She had been sleeping pretty much through the night for about 6 weeks, but the last few nights have been difficult.  She's been up 2 or 3 times from 10 pm to 6 am.  Poor thing, I can tell her little mouth hurts.  She's having a hard time nursing, too.  She latches on and then pulls off crying, then tries to latch on again, only to pull off crying again.  It's frustrating for me because I know she's hungry and my already limited supply is tapering off due to lack of stimulation.  I can't pump, so I rely on her totally.

I ended up feeding her a little rice cereal last night and she did surprisingly well with it!  She's still a week shy of 4 months, so I was reluctant to start already, but she's been trying to grab food off of our plates for about a week now!  She only ate about 1/2 a tablespoon, and she made the cutest funny faces the whole time!  I imagine that stuff tastes pretty bland...not that she has anything better to compare it with at this point!

Gotta run...the fair's calling my name!
