What were your favorite chapter books as a child?

I am trying to compile a nice long list of chapter books to read with the children.  If you wouldn't mind commenting on a few of your favorites, I would really appreciate it!!!

THANKS!!!

One of my favorite subjects: children's literature. But I'll try to restrain myself.

Aside from the Little House and Anne books (L.M. Montgomery)...

We just finished *Understood Betsy* by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. It's online--you can print it out for free at the Baldwin Project. It's not very long, but a wonderful read.

*The Wind in the Willows* (Kenneth Grahame) is one of my all-time favorites. My girls love *The Princess and the Goblin* by George MacDonald (also available free online). My 7yo in particular LOVED *Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.* Both girls were enthralled with *The Hobbit* and the Chronicles of Narnia.

Here's a link to some children's books to be found online:

I remember reading something like The Secrets of Nimh. I think it was the one with the rats? I also liked Madeline L'Engle's A Ring of Endless Light. And the Narnia books are always good!

Well, this wasn't one of *my* favorites because I don't remember anyone reading to me or reading myself very much...isn't that so sad... but one of our family's favorites now is 'Trumpet of the Swan'. I've read it twice to the kids now and they LOVE it.

I loved the Thornton W Burgess books when I was a kid: "The Adventures of Reddy Fox," "The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel," and so on. I've started reading these aloud to my littlest ones, and they LOVE them. They're learning about character, animal habitats and behaviour, and even roman numerals! (the chapters are numbered that way and my 6 yo dd can't stand not knowing what they mean)

I also loved the Madeleine L'Engle books ("A Wrinkle in Time") but I would caution you to find a Christian study guide, as some of the ideas presented are NOT mainstream Christianity.(if you are Christian.. if not, never mind)

Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys are favourites here, and lately the older girls like the Dear Canada series.

I posted a similar question recently on the FIAR boards. The Redwall series by Brian Jaques was mentioned (actually I asked about them and people seem to love them!). The Elsie Dinsmore series was another one people liked.

I have to secornd Understood Betsy...I just loved that one! And Little House books!

Let's ee...Rachel liked Ginger Pye and we all LOVED Teddy's Button. (good one for boys!)

Hank the Cowdog books were also recently discussed at FIAR as being a wonderful series.

Happy reading!

I am stopping by because today is Random Blog Day:) And I love books, so I had to answer this question: The Secret Garden, The Little House on the Prairie Books, The Trumpter Swan, Charlotte's Web, Black Beauty, The Black Stallion, Pollyanna, and Alfred Hitchcock spooky stories. I love ready and I love books!

With my children we have read the Indian in the Cupboard books (the first two are the best, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Huckleberry Finn, The Magic Treehouse series, Hank the Cowdog, and A Wrinkle in Time to name a few.

Sunday, April 16, 2006 - My favorite books...

Posted by DMalament
I have more favorite books from reading to my children than I have from my childhood. Part of it is that I didn't read as much for pleasure and literature then as I do now. Also, some of the best books weren't even written yet when I was a child (I am 47).

Ones not yet named that I like(d):
• The Secret Garden, Burnett;
• The Mennyms series by Shelia Waugh;
• Three Tales of My Father's Dragon, by Ruth Stiles Gannett;
• Heidi, by Spyri;
• Black Beauty, by Sewall;
• Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie by Peter Roop
• Rootabaga Stories, by Carl Sandberg;
• The Peterkin Papers, by Lucretia Hale (and other works by Hale);
• Lad: a Dog and others by Albert Payson Terhune;
• Caddie Woodlawn, by Brink;
• The Family Nobody Wanted, by Helen Grigsby Doss;
• Follow My Leader by James B. Garfield;
• Books by Beverly Cleary;
• Books by Edith Nesbit;
• Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, by Rachel Field (and others by Field);
• In Grandma's Attic & others by Arleta Richardson
• Justin Morgan Had a Horse by Marguerite Henry;
• Little Britches: Father & I Were Ranchers and others by Ralph Moody;
• Miracles on Maple Hill by Virginia Sorensen;
• Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard Atwater;
• Mr. Revere and I by Robert Lawson, and Rabbit Hill by same author;
• My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George;
• Number the Stars by Lois Lowry;
• Old Yeller by Fred Gipson;
• Yellow Eyes, by Rutherford Montgomery;
• Roller Skates by Ruth Sawyer;
• Freckles by Gene Statton Porter;
• Jack and Jill, by Louisa May Alcott;
• The Dragon and the Raven, by G.A. Henty

Books I am looking forward to trying:
• Blue Fairy Book and others by Andrew Lang (and the other Fairy Books too);
• Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank Gilbreth;
• Five Children & It by Edith Nesbit
• Five Little Peppers and How They Grew and others by Margaret Sidney
• Four-Story Mistake by Elizabeth Enright
• The Saturdays, by Enright
• House of Sixty Fathers by Meindert de Jong;
• Twenty One Balloons by William Pene DuBois;
• Heroes by Charles Kingsley;
• More books by G.A. Henty.

Hope this wasn't too long...
