Gifted Children

Well, it seems pretty evident that one or most likely two of our kiddos are gifted.  They are not just ahead but gifted in that quirky sort of way.  Mikey is about 3 grade levels ahead in his reading level and about 2 grades in math.  Sarah is about one grade ahead in everything.  Mikey is definitely showing several of the characteristics of giftedness that I have been reading about in the many library books that I have lugged home.

I don't mentiont this to boast (since I don't feel that I have any control over it anyway).  But, I am feeling a great deal of pressure to keep them challenged.  I don't want to waste this gift.  I know that in a regular school setting they would be bored to tears.  And, since I am the sole person choosing their curriculum right now, I am looking for guidance anywhere I can get it.

Oh, my dear husband agreed to go to this years homeschooling convention!!!  It is in May and I am already so excited.  He is gung ho about homeshooling but has never taken an interest in what  it is that we actually do all day.  So, this will be a nice way to connect for us.  (and some long over-due alone time)

We also have his 20 year high school reunion in April.  I am still on my weight loss trek.  I have 13 weeks left to get to my goal of size 6.  I am getting confident that I will make it. This will also be the weekend of our 10 year wedding anniversary.  So, I have a lot of motivation.  (I am also turning 35 next month which is another motivation to get fit in itself.)

We have so much going on in the next several months.  I want to be fit and healthy and feel really great about myself.  Let's see if my hubby joins in on my big fitness push.

Congrats on your weight loss so far! That is quite an accomplishment!!! I hope you and dh have fun both at the convention and reunion. I have yet to go to either one of those...maybe this year on the convention but definitely waiting until my 20yr for the reunion!

And as far as being gifted, that really is a special needs category just as much as someone who needs more remedial-type work. Praying for God to give you wisdom as you find exactly what your child needs.

Love,
Marsha

Oh my goodness! You are not going to believe this; BUT, I was hitting the random button hoping to find another homeschooler speaking on their gifted children. I landed on your blog on the third click.

Boy howdy do I understand quirky! I have two boys; youngest moderately gifted and the older boy is exceptionally gifted. In our family it seems the bigger the gift the more quirky. It does seem to be an awesome responsibility filled with daily challenges.

I was just getting ready to post my frustration on trying to find an adequate math program for my oldest quirk. I'm going to buzz around your site and see what else you might have posted regarding curriculum.

As far as suggestions for you, I have found we have to study everything in depth from the start and work sequentially until we have exhausted the topic within his level of comprehension. I have also found that unit studies are not enough to satisfy his appetite. When we tried anything similar we spent more time doing research to answer his questions than actually studying the topic. Anyway, just a few ideas based on what is working for us to assist you and your husband in the search when you attend convention.

I look forward to hearing more!

I'm so glad you will be able to go to the homeschooling conference. My parents say that it gives so much enthusiasm and encouragment to keep on keepin' on!

May God bless your efforts as you raise up your gifted children in the way they're supposed to go.

In HIM,
JB

Hi! Just found you while hitting the "random blog" button. My soon to be eight year old seems to be a grade or two ahead, too. I have been doing lots of reading on gifted children lately. I would love to hear what has worked for your family. I will check back in later and give you the names of some of the books I've found helpful.

For math, the ALEKS online math program has been great. It truly lets your child move ahead at their own pace. http://www.aleks.com/

Hope to talk to you more later,
Laurie

Wow! As a mother of a gifted child I understand your pressure to keep the children stimulated so they don't waste their gift, and also so they don't get bored and develop poor study habits because they have not been challenged. It is indeed special to have special kids.

We challenge Josie (just 6) by teaching her the piano and by developing her creative tallents on http://www.mybabymonsters.com

She and her dad has a bi-weekly podcast, a daily story on the website, a book and various merchandise on the site. It takes a lot of my husbands time but Josie enjoys it so much, that it is worth the time investment.
