Just a quick update

Posted in How we are using My Father's World Curriculum

Well, once again things have been busy at our house lately.  I just wanted to share a couple of quick things that are on my mind right now.  Our study (My Father's World - Creation to the Greeks) is progressing nicely.  We have worked our way up to Jacob and his 12 children.  So after a few weeks of studying Ancient Egypt we have had a break from that as we work our way up to the point where Jacob's son Joseph is sold into slavery in Egypt.  While we were still studying Egypt we toured a museum exhibit called "Egypt: The Quest for Immortality".  It was so neat.  We were able to see over 100 artifacts from Egypt, mostly items recovered from tombs.  There was information to read about each exhibit, and audio provided via head sets for a lot of the items.  We brought home some really great items from the gift shop that we could incorporate into our notebooks, which allowed the kids to get really creative...you know cut, paste, decorate!  They really liked that.  I would highly suggest this exhibit if it is going to be anywhere near you before it leaves the US.  This link will give you a little information about the exhibit itself:  http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2002/egypt/index.htm

The exhibit will be in the following locations before leaving the US:

Portland Art Museum, November 5, 2006–March 4, 2007
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, September 2–December 31, 2007

I hope you will be able to see it while it is still in the US.  I was astounded as I stood looking at these artifacts that had been buried for thousands of years.  I was even more astounded as I thought of  the people who placed these items in the tombs and why they placed them there.

On another note, in a couple of weeks we will be taking a break from our MFW curriculum to do a week or two of Amanda Bennett's unit study on Thanksgiving.  I thought it would be a good break, and we could dive into something related to the upcoming holiday.  If you are looking for a great study on Thanksgiving this one is designed to cover 4 weeks, and has lots of information including book lists and lots of links to web-sites for further exploration.  It is available on the Homeschool E Store website.  Don't forget to pick up Amanda Bennett's Thanksgiving Notebooking Pages as well.  The last time I looked those were free, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.  I'll give you the link to Homeschool E Store here:  http://www.homeschoolestore.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2084

This link will take you to the current free item available for this week from them (about spiders).  After you download the free item (if you want it), you can do a search on Thanksgiving or on Amanda Bennett to find the Thanksgiving study.  They have lots of other great items from Amanda Bennett and other great authors and publishers so spend some time searching for what you need or what your children would like to know more about.  What do you children like?  Trains, baseball, horses, insects, animals, Bible studies?  We have used several things purchased from this site, and enjoyed them all.  I hope you find something you like!

I suppose I should conclude my "quick" update.  Here is a challenge for you.  Begin to think about what you can do to bless another family or individual over the upcoming holidays.  Make a plan for doing that, then carry through with that plan.  (Begin now because if you plan to go through an organization like the ones listed below many of them stop taking donations in mid November or early December.)  Maybe you could bless someone in your neighborhood, church, or community.  Or perhaps someone a long distance away...maybe even another country.  If you are looking for a great way to bless a child let me suggest a couple:  Toys for Tots is a great organization operated by the US Marines.  Another great way to bless a child is through Operation Christmas Child  which is operated by Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham).  It's simple to fill a shoe box with small toys, pencils, coloring books and crayons, soap, socks, toothbrush, ball caps and more.  Do something this year to bless someone else who may not have anyone to bless them at Thanksgiving or Christmas, and include your children....get their ideas...and let them help with the preparations.  What better way to teach them to care for their fellow man!

Blessings!
