Our Thanksgiving Notebooks

Posted in Homeschooling

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Christmas will soon be upon us!  During the month of November we took our break from our "Creation to the Greeks" unit study (published by My Father's World).  During that time we studied Thanksgiving using Amanda Bennett's "Thanksgiving Unit Study" and the "Thanksgiving Learn N' Folder" from Live N' Learn Press, along with many wonderful books from our local library and some sources on the internet.

I wanted to post a few pictures of some of the children's notebook pages from that study.  Each child has a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors.  As they would finish a page (like the ones below) they would slide them into sheet protectors in their notebooks.  They designed their own covers and made decorative strips to slide into the spine of their notebooks.

I purchased these cut-outs at the local school supply store.  The leaf came in a pack with other fall colored leaves, and the others were notepads.  The kids wrote their vocabulary words and definitions on them and pasted them to card stock paper.

Here are more of the leaves that I mentioned above.  With this page the kids wrote on each leaf something they were thankful for.  I wanted them to be able to keep this in their notebooks rather than making a tree of thankfulness on the wall.  This is a sweet memory for them to look back on when they are older to remind them of the things that were important to them when they were younger.

Here is another example of ways to use the notepads I mentioned with the first picture.  This is a creation of my 9 year old daughter.  She thought it wasn't sufficient to only put examples of the Indian and Pilgrim houses.  She felt it necessary to add some information about each, and she chose to use the Indian girl and Pilgrim boy notepads to display that information.  The red and orange papers you see behind the houses are scraps of textured cardstock.  I was able to purchase a pack of this paper already cut in a couple of different sizes, and in a large variety of colors, at the local craft store.

These are just a few samples of the things our kids did with this study.  I'll be posting some pics of how we incorporated the lapbook activities into their notebooks as well.
