My Father's World - A Brief Curriculum Review and How We Used It - Part 1

Posted in How we are using My Father's World Curriculum

A Year with "My Father's World"

Spring here is in full swing, and summer will soon be here.  That

means the school year is drawing to a close.  This year I can't say

that I'm glad.  Most years I'm counting days, and then feeling a great

sense of relief that it is over.  So, you may ask, to what do I

attribute this change?

Answer:  My Father's World curriculum

In our 5 years of homeschooling I can say without a doubt that this

year has been the best.  I'm very pleased with all we've accomplished

this year.  The children have learned so much ,and have learned it with

joy.  There was no mid-year burnout -  no end of the year anxiety.

They've enjoyed what we've done this year, and for that I'm truly

grateful.

What have we studied?

1.) Creation - We learned about the creation of the world...the

animals, Adam and Eve, and yes even the dinosaurs...all from a

Biblical worldview!

2.)  Noah, the worldwide flood, re-population and the dispersion after

the flood.

3.)  Ancient civilizations...how they lived, where they lived, where

they came from, and what their religious beliefs were.  Civilizations

such as the Israelites, Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, etc.

4.)  Science - we did lots of hands on experiements during the first 3

semesters.  During this last semester we began learning about

Archimedes and some simple machines.  In learning about Archimedes

the children are learning where some things we use in daily life, and

some ideas came from.

5.)  The Bible has really come alive this year.  The Old Testament can

sometimes be difficult to grasp, but as most of the history has been

linked to the Bible much of the Old Testament has become more

meaningful.  I have loved doing a chronological history study that is

so well linked to Biblical history.

That is a brief summary of what we have studied this past year.  My

Father's World (MFW) curriclum does not include math or language arts

in their packages.  However, they do offer their suggestions for which

curriculums to use for these subjects, but leave the choice to the

discretion of the parents.

NEXT TIME:

In my next post I'll talk about some fun things we did this year for

school, be sure to check back.

Blessings!

I'm so glad to hear you say this. It looks like you skipped the first "geography" unit. Right?

I'm going to start using MFW -- this is our first week. I got the entire ECC from a friend to borrow for free. So I'm not going to skip it -- but we are starting it at an odd time. Normally our school year starts in September... but I'm so excited about MFW -- that I'm stopping Ambleside Mid-term and starting this now. First week went WELL!!

Praise God for your great year. I'm so glad to hear that you liked it. I can't wait to read what else you liked about MFW.

Jennifer,

We did skip ECC. My 2 older kids had used Switched on Schoolhouse from Alpha Omega for the previous school year, and had a very in depth study of geography. I felt they would have been very bored to study geography again. My youngest child had no geography experience (other than some general US geography such as "this is our state on the map" and "this is a map of the U.S."). I was a little concerned that she would have a difficult time with CTG by not having had geography, but she didn't. As we went along I was able to answer any geography related questions and help her with map activities. She did great. I know there have been a lot of questions on the MFW Yahoo group boards about whether to start with ECC or not. I think with our situation it worked fine to not begin with ECC, but for students who haven't had an in depth geography study it is probably a great place to begin. I think that's what the Hazell's had in mind when preparing the 5 year study....having a solid geography study with countries and their cultures before going into the chronological history study.

I'm glad you enjoyed your first week of MFW. I hope that you will be as pleased with the curriculum as we have been. I only wish I had known about this curriculum and style of learning when we began homeschooling 5 years ago. It would have saved us a lot of workbook burnout!

Blessings!
