It's time for an update again...10 weeks and counting!

We've been keeping busy since the last update. We've made several models of the senses in science, we've made resurrection cookies, we've finished (for now) Augustus Caesar's World and The Bronze Bow. We've just begun week 10 and are studying the how the church began as well as reading Galen and the Gateway of Medicine and Twice Freed. This is the first day we have read from those books so I'll give you a review when we are a little farther along with those. I've really wanted to post some pictures of notebook pages the kids have made, so I'll post a few in this update. I really would like to be able to post pictures of the models they are making with The Body Book, but haven't figured out a way to show all of the layers of the models we have made so far. I am going to post the model of the skin they made. It will probably be difficult to tell that it is actually several layers of paper, but because of the way this model is designed all of the skin layers are clearly visible in this picture. The only exception is that you won't be able to see the entire "hair" that erupts through the surface of the skin. ![]() Earlier in the year the kids drew diagrams of cells using line drawings of cells in The Human Body for Every Kid as their guide. The picture below is the page my 8 year old daughter did. (I allowed her to trace rather than draw). ![]() We also completed the model of the skeletal system today, but I won't be posting a scanned image of that model. It is as tall as an average 5 year old and it won't fit on my scanner bed. We have to now decide what to do with these three paper (pre-schooler sized) skeletons. We may hang them on the wall of the school room since they won't fit in our science notebooks without folding them. Folding them may be an option for later when the human body study is complete and we move on to astronomy. If we hang them on the wall I may be convinced to photograph them and share the picture with you all. The kids have already named them...Mr. Bones (which started us singing the song from the old Bing Crosby movie "White Christmas"), Boney (which made me think of a book I have called "Boney and Clod" written by a pastor...I still haven't read that book), and Bonette (my 10 yr old dd came up with that one and I don't have a clue about where that came from). Can you tell I'm easily distracted? We have slowly been delving into the nature walk assignments. One child doesn't like to draw at all. The other two like to draw, but there is not a lot of scenery here in town in the way of nature, so subject matter is somewhat limited. We don't do them each week, and sometimes I will allow them to look at pictures in a book or magazine and sketch what they see. This next picture is what my 10 year old daughter drew from looking at a picture in a magazine. ![]() On another note, I want to suggest a book for those of you using MFW's Rome to the Reformation this year...or for anyone who will study Medieval history this year. Several weeks ago the HSBCompanyBlog posted a contest and the prize was The Terrestria Chronicles book series by Ed Dunlop. I won the first book in the series , received it, read it and LOVED IT ! ![]() Well, I think that wraps it up for now. Leave me a comment here or at my other blog. Blessings, Missy |
