Redeeming the Time: Costumes and Church Parties

It's been busy here again.  We've been preparing for your "Kid's Karnival" at our church.  The kids and I picked up all the donated candy from our church and spent an entire day sorting, calculating, dividing, and bagging candy (can you say math lesson!).  We ended up with almost 120 bags.  The girls are excited about going...one will be Cleopatra, and the other will be a veterinarian.  We made a sheet into a dress and are making a jeweled collar out of yellow fabric and glue on gems for Cleopatra to wear.  The vet will wear green scrubs with tiny little dogs and cats pinned all over her as if they were climbing up her legs and arms.  Cleopatra told the other girls at church who she was going to dress up as, and would you believe that none of them knew who she was talking about?

We don't like going into town this time of year.  It seems every store has really gross stuff in your face from the time you walk in till you walk out.  This is just not our thing.  The party at church is a diversion.  The kids that come don't have to deal with all of that "halloween" stuff.  They get to play games, eat popcorn and cookies, watch an awesome puppet show that presents the gospel, and get a big bag of candy when they go out the door.  I think this is a great way to redeem this "holiday" for our Lord, by ministering to families and sharing the gospel.

Doll Wars

On another note, I was reading my e-mail today and ended up at Doug's Blog.  He's posted a message about Doll Wars that is timely for parents of young girls.  I thought you might want to skip on over to read about that, but no running!

Virtual Surgery

Now for the stuff the kids will like!  For about a year now my kids have been playing games on a site that *teaches* (hehe ) them about knee replacement, hip replacement, and hip resurfacing.  Now that we are studying the human body in RTR this year, and since we are just finishing up our study of the bones and joints, they have been eager to go back and play these games again.  The game takes you through the process of a real surgery and you are the surgeon ...choosing the instruments and doing the work on an animated patient.  The kids think this is so cool!  My 8 year old likes one of the games, but not  so much the others.  My older two like them all from what I can gather.  Tonight my son had just finished playing the game and had clicked on another link in the site that shows true to life pictures of a real surgery.  As he was looking at some pictures he said "Momma look, this is spongy bone where the red blood cells are made."  We had just talked about that this week in our discussion of the long bone.  He also noticed where the fat cells were under the skin.  I could have done without that comment since I don't like to think about fat cells under the skin (too close to home), but I was a good mother and kept my mouth shut.  Ok, so ready for your kiddo's to play along?  Here is the site edHeads.  The site also has something on the weather and simple machines.  Enjoy!

Blessings,
Missy
