A deep, incessant bark came drifting in through the open kitchen window. Immediately the children jumped and ran outside to see what it was about. After a few minutes one of them excitedly bounded inside looking for a flash light. It was after 9:30 pm so they couldn't see what all of the excitement was over because it was so dark out. There was something getting the attention of our dogs by the back gate, but the children couldn't make out what it was. I went out to see what was going on, and was called down near the back gate. "There is something out here, but I can't tell what it is", said my oldest. The dogs were excitedly circling something, then suddenly I saw one of the dogs pick it up in her mouth. I told her "No!" and she dropped it. Taking the flashlight from the hands of my oldest child I quickly scanned the ground and there it was. A gray lump, about the size of a small cat, on the ground right where the dog dropped it. My eyes were still trying to focus in on the details when I spotted the long pink tail. It was an o'possum, and it appeared to be dead. By this time I was joined by the next oldest child, and we stood in the black of night shining a flash light on an apparently dead animal in our back yard. I asked one of the children to get their Dad so he could dispose of it. I didn't want the dogs to eat it, for fear it may be diseased. When dh came out and found out what we were doing he told us to stay away from it. When he said "It is probably still alive" I immediately remembered our marsupial science lesson from just a few weeks before. It was "Playing 'Possum"! I shined the light on it steadily and watched carefully for a few seconds. It was all laid out with it's mouth open and body as still as death....then it breathed! We had to put the dogs up to keep them away from it, and by this morning it was gone. Apparently one of the dogs scared it as it was moving through our yard, and it put on a great theatrical performance for us all. Imagine my delight...the home school mom who is always looking for ways to reinforce learning...when we were actually able to observe God's provision of defense for this poor ugly creature! Tonight, while I was putting my children to bed, my oldest daughter said "I cannot believe we actually got to witness a 'possum playing dead in our own back yard!" I smiled as I thought to myself how Great is our God who provides even the smallest lessons of his wondrous works! ![]() |
