Jun. 26, 2008 - Contemplations....

HAPPY SUMMER!

I felt it was time for a major update!

Oh my, there is sooooo much to tell...where do I begin???

First I managed to pull a 3.0 last semester despite working 60 hours a week, caring for the kids and carrying 9 credits at school...whew...no wonder I was a zombie all the time...LOL!

I've lost even more weight and hope to be "one hot chick" by the end of the year!!!
My hair is back to it's normal blonde, thanks to my friend, Kim, AND my self-esteem is way up there where it belongs!

I filed divorce papers this week.  I waited a full year before doing so.  I now know that it is the right decision.  I am at peace.....

I 'm  slowly beginning to make some friends in the area.  I've been to a few bike rallies and just have a blast!
Still kinda lonely...it would be nice to go to dinner or a movie or just hang out with someone...the friends I've made seem pretty busy with their own friends and lives and I don't fit in, yet.  It seems most men aren't interested in a woman with kids...seem to just want sweet, young things!  Aahhhh, but I know the Lord has wonderful plans for me...just have to keep the faith and trust in Him!!!

So, with the kids gone..I pretty much just go to school and work part-time at the campground. Sometimes the loneliness is engulfing.....

Meanwhile, Sara is back in Maryland and will be 18 on the 30th...soooo hard to believe my little girl is a grown woman..how I wish I could have another little girl!

William and Joshua are with their dad.  William has decided to move back with me!!!!!  He says he is tired of taking care of his dad.  I don't blame him.

I will post new photos soon and write more later!!

Apr. 13, 2008 - Flying Solo...

Where to begin???  It has been many months since I have written..I have been very busy!  On April 11th I quit my job at Wal-Mart and am focusing on school full-time.  I have decided to major in Elementary Education with an additional certification in Speech Therapy.  i will transfer to Missouri State in the Spring.
Sara has registered for college and will start this Fall.  We will take some classes together!  She wants to major  in Nursing and then midwifery so she can do mission work.  i am very proud of her!
We are still in our RV and survived the winter just fine despite not having hot water & the furnaces quitting!!  I am working 20 hours a week in the campground office in exchange for living rent free.
Haven't made any friends, yet.  Although I am going to some local functions and Lil' Sturgis, this summer, and I hope to make some friends then.
Meanwhile I am loving school and life!  I would love to hear from ya'll.  Just because I moved away doesn't mean I've disappeared!  I've lost a tremendous amount of weight and hope to have the rest of it off by this summer!

Blessings, Lisa Ann...doing just fine on her own!

Feb. 4, 2008 - A New Year & A New Life!!

 Happy New Year!!!
The kids and I came out here the end of October in the RV and love it!!!  I still work for Wal-Mart just in a new town, now!   I started college on Jan. 14th.  They accepted all of my credits from Anne Arundel Comm. College so, I will have my degree at the end of the year (AA) and then I am transferring to MSSU (MIssouri Southern State University) in Joplin.  My major is in Elementary Education.
Anyway, life has been busy!  All the kids are in public school.  Joshua loves it but says he learns more in homeschool than at public school!  Sara is going for one semester and says all the classes are easy. She plans on going  to college this Fall.
William is in public school and living with his dad.  I really miss him!  Hard to believe he will be 16 on Valentine"s Day!  The school is terrible but he is an excellent student.  I am glad I taught him good study skills and he takes his education seriously.
My parents finally moved back to California from maryland. Jennifer is still in West  Virginia.  I plan on staying right here in Missouri.  I love it~~the people are delightful and the cost of living is cheap. I am only 50 miles from Springfield and 2 hours from Branson.  When we drove through here 2 years ago I knew this is where I wanted to live.  I can be in Kansas or Oklahoma in 15 minutes.
Anyway,  between work and carrying 9 credits in college life will be busy!

Lots of Love,
Lisa, Sara & Joshua
Abby, the beagle
Lilly, the "princess" cat
Bella, the "rat" cat

Oct. 12, 2007 - A New Chapter....

Happy Fall!

Yahoo...it has finally cooled down!  Perfect walking weather and I am loving it. Our move day is almost here!  My last day at Wally World is Oct. 24 and we hit the road on the 25th!!  I start my new job on Oct. 29th. I am very nervous about driving this coach, towing the car, the 300 miles to my new home.  I have a friend who might come with us (with his wife and daughter) and help me drive. That would be fun!
Sara and Joshua are excited about going to public school or the first time.  Sara's school is 3 1/2 miles from where we will be staying and Joshua's school is only 2 1/2 miles away.  Our pastor's wife grew up in the town we are moving to and she wants to move back with us!  She has given us a list of places to go to.  Everyone I have spoken to has told me wonderful things about the area and all have been very positive about our move!
Richard and I have drawn up some temporary separation papers that we will have notarized this week.  When that is done it will be easier to leave.  William has chosen to stay with his Dad.  I have Sara, Joshua and two of the  cats ,Lilly & Bella, and my dog, Abby.  Richard has William,  the other two cats, Mosi & Jackson,  and Joshua's dog, Kaya.  Kaya is too big for the RV and we will get her and the other cats when I settle into a house in the Spring.
I'll write more when I have more time!

Sep. 21, 2007 - Newspapers

Well, we had a wonderful field trip with our homeschool group last week!  We went to the South East Missourian Newspaper for a tour of the facilities and a learned how a paper is published.  You can see photos at this link: Pictures of Field Trip

The photos show our group[ at the plant and then at the park.  Joshua is in the green shirt with black sleeves and Sara in in the grey shirt.  We had a lovely picnic and the kids put together their own paper.  Every student brought a piece to include in the paper.  My children each wrote a poem and I am very impressed by their writing abilities.

Here are the poems:

Fairy Wings

She sat among the tree tops,
Silver moonlight on her face.
Her skin bejeweled with diamond dew;
her dress of spider lace.

So fragile and so elegant
her crown of baby's breath
entwined and glowing in her hair,
she mourned the moonlights death.

Once known to all then pushed aside
upon adulthood's dawning,
she sat in silence all alone
and listened to echoes calling.

Memories of simplicity
rode in among the breeze
as she watched their faces turn away
for they no longer 'just believed'.

So among the ample landscapes
of growing up and childish dreams
she carried the end of innocence
on her forgotten fairy wings.

Patriotic Songs

Patriotic songs do ring,
Songs we shall not stop singing.
For this is our land-a land that is free,
And I am proud as I shall ever be.

Stars shining bright,
Red, white and blue.
The nation is celebrating,
And it's all for you.

Happy Birthday, America,
I love you.
Happy Birthday, America,
Our pledge to you is true.

Sep. 21, 2007 - Moving Forward With Our King of Kings!

Our King of Kings!

This stained glass photo was sent to me by a friend.  He called it  "Our King of Kings" and he is so right!
It is amazing what will happen when you truly "Let Go and Let God".  It has been a  rough road for me.  A close friend once said to me "Lisa, you are so in and out of God it's amazing you even believe."  His words got me thinking and I have worked harder at trying to follow God's will for my life.
I called the third store on my list yesterday and spoke with the head CSM, Donna,  and she was delightful!  She welcomed me aboard and was looking forward to meeting me soon.  She will call me back on Tuesday with the details of my starting date, etc.  I told her I didn't know  anyone but she said that if I was as friendly in person as I sounded on the phone I would have no problems making friends.
I am happy that she can give me 32-34 hours a week and 40+ hours over the holidays.  Also, I will be getting a small pay raise!  The store I am in now cannot give me more hours.  I have tried and tried to get more.  The area is not growing and their sales have been falling.  So, the hours are not there.
Several of the associates I work with have come to me to tell me  that they are sad to see me go.  Even the store manager and co-manager have said that they are sorry to lose me because I have been such a joy to work with!  One of the cashiers is organizing a  girl's night out going away party for me.  I am so touched.  I had no idea I was so well liked!  It is a little sad to leave all the friends I have made.
There is no doubt that I am getting a bit nervous about driving this 37' coach towing a 16' car 300+ miles.  I can do it...I will just have to take my sweet ol' time!!!  I just wish Sara would stop laughing at me when she thinks of me driving it!

May your day be blessed by our King!!!

Sep. 17, 2007 - Sewing Memories

Sara and Joshua had rehearsal tonight for "Peter Pan".  Rehearsal is almost every night, now.  It's a little hard with my work schedule but we are making it work.
Sara is helping me sew the costumes.  Joshua's is pretty easy.  I will have to spend several hours on Sara's pirate's vest because it has grommets, boning and is fully lined.  It is sooooo nice to have my sewing machine back!!!  It is the best machine and even after being in storage for  nearly 4 years it still runs smoothly!
It feels kinda weird to be using it in the RV.  I sit down to sew and I feel like I am back at my teak dining room table  in my house in Maryland looking at the Chesapeake Bay as I sew.  There is so much history in the machine!
I began to think about all I have sewn on it and realized it has literally stitched my life's story!  Richard bought  it for me when we became engaged 19 years ago.  The first thing I sewed on it were curtains for his house.  After we were married I sewed most of my maternity clothes and all the items for the nursery ( curtains, crib bumpers and dust ruffle, etc).  Of course, I made a beautiful Christening gown and I made my girlfriend's wedding dress!  When I think of all the Halloween costumes and Christmas I have created and sewn!
And now we are into theatre!  I love costume design!  It is so much fun designing a costume and then sewing it into creation.  Here are photos of Sara and Joshua in the costumes I made for them for the "Wizard of Oz" play.

Sharla is on the left and Sara is on the right (with the white apron)
I was pretty tired of the color emerald green by the time I finished sewing the dress!

Here is Joshua as one of the Munchkins.  His was easy to make!

I will be sure to post photos from "Peter Pan" when the play is over.
I  guess that's it for now.......

Sep. 17, 2007 - Patience is a virtue....

When, oh when , will I learn to just sit back and wait for God's guidance?  Why must I be so impatient and anxious about my future?  I have a friend who reminds to just be patient and Trust the Father Spirit for He knows where to lead me.  I should listen to my friend more often for he is wiser than me!
Last night I cried and cried and finally prayed (as in the song) "Jesus, take the wheel 'cause I can't do this anymore."  This morning when I went into work James, the store manager, told me he had approved my transfer! So, during my lunch break,  I called the stores I am interested in transferring to.  The closest one will keep me posted will keep me posted.  Gina, the front end manager for the next closest store, asked me to call back the week of October 13th. However, the third store was very interested in having me asap.  They need cashiers and can give me close to 40 hours a week.  I am to call the front end manager, Steve,  on Thursday when he returns from a re-model.  I was hoping for the other two stores because they are closer to where I will be living.  The  store that is interested in me is 19 miles away, about a 1/2 hour drive. It doesn't matter...I will take whichever store offers me a position first!  I need to "Let Go and Let God" more often!
Sara is very excited!  She says she wants to go before Halloween.  I was surprised because  a few days ago she wanted to stay here until after Halloween.  I had originally planned on going out to our new town after Thanksgiving but, again, Sara asked if we could go sooner.  I was concerned about leaving Richard and William for both holidays.  Sara said that many families get divorced and are apart for holidays and we will be OK.  Richard was not interested in discussing the holidays.  She is right...since the stores are hiring for Christmas help now.  Also, she would like to get a job at the Civil war museum as soon as she can.

I'll write later when I have more news!

Sep. 14, 2007 - I Believe It's Time For Me To Fly.......

In the words of REO Speedwagon, yep, it is time to move one!  After a family pow wow, Sara, Josh and I have decided to hit the road and travel southwest ,Missouri!  It is an area we had considered a year and a half ago before we bought the property we have now.  There were two pretty parks for sale we just fell in love with the area.
The town we are moving to is a charming Civil War Era town known for its maple trees and civil war history

I have put in for a transfer to three of the  Wal- Marts in the area. I'm in holding mode until I hear back from one of the stores.   We can move anytime after the 21st of October due to our commitment with the theater.  Sara and Joshua are acting in their third performance, "Peter Pan" running from October 18-21.
We don't know anyone in the area.  However, we are making some connections thanks to our assistant pastor and his wife.  They both grew up in the area and recently transferred to the church here in and miss the area.  They have been very encouraging about upcoming move and have given us several contacts.
I was thrilled to discover that there is a very active home school group where we are moving and have already been in contact with them. They have been very inviting and I look forward to getting involved with the group.
Sara and I will both be going to college. We are applying to a couple of colleges. I would like to teach at a Christian school. Sara is also considering a women's college.  I will be going for my Early Childhood Development degree and Sara will be studying to be a high school history teacher!
As for William, he has decided to stay with his father and it will be hard to leave him and move 300 miles.  He is now attending a public high school and seems to be enjoying it.  My homeschooling paid off as he was able to walk in and start classes with no problems and he is breezing through his assignments.  I miss him.  I don't see him too often even though he is only 4 miles away.  He has some anger at me because of the divorce and it will just take some time.

So, now I just have to figure out to drive 60 feet of vehicles down the road and we should be OK!  I got in the driver's seat today and started up the engine to let it idle a bit and Sara started laughing at me.  She said she didn't see how I was going to drive the RV because I was so short and I looked small sitting there!  Well, I told her that I felt quite comfortable, I could see out of all my mirrors and I have the back-up camera!

That is all for now!  I need to get back to work on the costumes for the play! Sara is a pirate and Joshua is a lost boy.  Both have speaking parts and I was amazed at how quickly they learned their lines and cues.

Blessings!

Jul. 20, 2007 - I am "Unwritten".....

Life is getting better and better!  I have decided that the song is my "theme" song.  It is also the "song" of my close friend, Kim! You can listen to it on my playlist.
Life is an open book for me at this time and I am loving it!!!  I am so at peace now and am beginning to enjoy all the small pleasures that life has to offer. The possibilities seem endless and where my new path takes me only God knows.  But, I know he will guide me wisely!
Today I was at the doctor's, again, as they try to figure out the mystery of my cough and difficulty in breathing.  The pulmonary function test came back "inconclusive" although the doctor said that I appear to have some kind of blockage in my lungs.  He thinks this is why I feel like my lungs are closing in on me and I can't "breath". I am at 75% functionality on my exhales.  So, they took a series of chest x-rays.  Two doctors reviewed them, while I waited, and they decided to give me a TB skin test.  I have to go back on Monday to have the results read.  The x-rays are being sent to a radiologist in Cape Girardeau and I will have those results in 2 weeks (when I see the doctor, again).
Meanwhile, I have some changes to my meds.  I now take Cingulair once a day & Allerx & Advair (an inhaler) twice a day.
Along with Aciphex and Nasonex.  UGH!!  So many drugs!

Jul. 13, 2007 - On The Road, Again....Sort Of!

This past week I moved into the RV and am staying at a really nice campground.  I have free cable and WiFi!  My husband is in the "house" running the mobile home park with our son, William; Joshua is still back East and Sara is in North Carolina enjoying the SPLAT convention.
I am sooooo happy to be back in my RV!!  It feels like coming home, again!  Now, I can just concentrate on work, homeschooling and getting on with my life without the worries of being a landlord.  My husband is very happy to be back running the park.  So, it is all a good thing.
I am beginning to plan our coming school year.  William will do Sonlight's Core 5.  This will be perfect for him since he just returned from New Zealand & Australia.  Joshua will continue with Core 1+2 and Sara is still going over her choices.  She is considering using the ACE curriculum along with some Sonlight books.
I am using this time, alone, to focus on myself and do some things I don't always have time to do while raising three kids!  I have started writing in my journal, again, and I even gave myself a pedicure.  It was fun to pamper myself!

Jul. 1, 2007 - Life Comes at You Fast.....Dodge!

Every once in awhile life throws you a curve ball and I have been tossed one!  Yep, it has been a long time since I have posted and for that I apologize.  But, hey, curve balls can be tricky and complicated.   Mine definitly has been!

First, I am still working at Wally World.  I decided to stay on after the remodel and it was a good decision.  I am cashiering in Lawn & Garden and I am really enjoying it!  I have made some great friends, I get to be outside and I am surrounded by pretty flowers and plants.   What could be better?

Secondly, and rather sadly, I have seperated from my husband of 18 years.  Please do not judge my decision.  It was not made lightly but, rather, with great thought.  It is something that has been in the works for quite some time.  I feel so much better.  Like a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders!  I have lost weight (something I have needed to do) and I am happier!

William has returned!!!!!   He arrived in Missouri on June 9th!  My goodness has he changed!  He is so tall, about 6' 1" and has really filled out.  Gone is the argumentative, troublemaker little kid.  Now, he is patient, loving and tolerant of his siblings.

Joshua went back to Maryland & West Virginis with my parents.  he is having a blast playing with his cousins, Dakota & Lhasa, going to sports camp and building forts.

Sara is going to SPLAT Youth 2007 in Greensboro, NC with our church.  She leaves July 10th and will return July 16th.  Then, she will fly to Maryland and will join Joshua at my sister's place in West Virginia.  The beginning of August my sister, her family, Joshua & Sara will drive to Cape Cod for 2-3 weeks to visit our Great Uncle.

Meanwhile, Richard & I are trying to come to terms on the sale of the mobile home park.  I will stay in Missouri until the divorce is final and then, well, who knows~~it's a big country and I am not sure where we will go, yet!  It's kinda in God's hands!  My new song is "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield.  That kinda sums it up for me.

Our homeschooling has been on hold for awhile to make room for life's little lessons.  After all, in the words of Charlotte Mason "Life is Education"!  I am looking forward to getting "back on track", as they say. We will still use Sonlight, which I adore.

I have been going to Al Anon meetings.  I can't recommend them enough!  The ladies are nice and I have a friend, from Wal Mart, who goes with me.  She has been a great sponser for me.

I need to get ready for work.  Please keep me in your prayers!

Mar. 25, 2007 - I need to dance.........

"There are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there's still time to change the road your on....."  Led Zeppelin

I need to dance!  I love to dance!  I just hear the music and I have to dance!

What happened to my Spring?   The past few days have been unseasonably warm~~80+!  I love the warm weather however, I do miss the lovely coolness of Spring.
Today, I went to the early service at church and enjoyed the Spring Coffee afterward.  I made a new friend, Anita, and went to her house this afternoon to chat and look at some cedar trees she is giving me.  She teaches a crocheting class at church on Tuesday evenings and I am looking forward to joing this week!
I finally planted my irises.  I have been meaning to do it for quite some time.  Kaya, our new little puppy, was a great help.   She had a blast digging the holes for me.  The only problem was that she kept snatching the iris roots and running off with them!
Yesterday was a busy work day at the park. It didn't end until 9:30 PM.   I have been trying to hire someone who can help with the carpentry work I need done.  I haven't been too successful in finding anyone.  I guess I am going to learn the trade pretty quickly!  This morning, after church, I spent a couple of hours cleaning the house and working on the water system.  Now, I am doing laundry so I can be ready for my other job at Wal-mart.
I am using the laptop because Joshua spilled gingerale on the keyboard of the desktop computer.  I can't figure out how to get the keys off to clean it.  Joshua went to paducah to a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese's and I am sure he is having a blast!
i still need to get the rent roll ready for April and do some lesson planning.   I am starting to really burn out from working at Wal-Mart, then coming home and working on the park and keep the family happy & running smoothly!!!  "Calgon, take me away!"
OK, time to put the laundry in the dryer and get dinner going!

Have a blessed week!

Blessings, Lisa

Mar. 12, 2007 - Thoughts of the day.....

Today was another beautiful day!  It was tough getting up for work because of the time change.  But, I made it and had a good day.  I took the car beacuse I had to go the the Social Security office to change the name on my card from my maiden name to my married name ( I've only been married 18 years!).   It was a very pleasant experience...in and out in 15 minutes.  It would have taken half the day back in Annapolis.  Since I had the car I drove out to a cotton field during my lunch break and had a lovely walk.  Then, I went back to the parking lot and sat in the car enjoying the sun and listening to "Loggins & Messina".
Joshua got his first buzz cut yesterday!  My friend, Tiara, cut it for him when I went to pick up Sara from her house.  He looks like like a mini William!!!  I can't believe it!  Of course, that just made me miss William and realize just how fast kids grow.
Sara spent the night at Sharla's house on Saturday.  The girls wore sarongs and made a Thai dish.  Then they sat around the bon fire roasting marshmellows.  She had a great time!  I am so glad she is finally making a friend!
I need to do some lesson planning this week.  Now that the play is over it is time to get back on track.  I guess I will take some paperwork to work with me tomorrow.
It is only 7:30 pm, but I am ready to go to bed.  I can hear the kids playing outside and the smell of freshly plowed earth is wafting in through the open windows..  The farmer that rents land from us just plowed.  I wonder what he is going to plant?  This past summer and Fall it was wheat and then soybeans.  Oh my gosh, those fresh soybeans were so good!  I was going out to the field and eating them!

OK, off to bed to read a good book and get a good nights sleep!

Mar. 11, 2007 - Notes From Australia

Here is the latest update from my parents & my son, William.  They are now in Australia.  Actually, they left on a 6 day backpacking trip through Tasmania yesterday!  As you read keep in mind that my parents are 63 and my dad has heart disease.

Blessings, Lisa

Hi --

I wasn't able to get to a computer terminal as soon as I thought when I wrote the following below. Anyway, we now have been in The Land of Oz for about four days and it has been quite wonderful. We did not expect the beauty or the pleasant tropical climate we got. Anyway, please forgive the delay and I hope all is well back home. We miss you. Now, here is what I wrote a couple of days ago
 . . .

I just finished changing the clock on my computer back to 10:04 a.m. from 1:04 p.m.  That’s because we now are at Cairns , Australia , where we arrived yesterday afternoon after more than five hours of flying and many more hours than that of scrambling for cabs, buses, and trains and a connecting flight from Brisbane . We got up at 5 a.m. New Zealand time and by the time we got to bed at our hotel last night, it was the equivalent of 3:30 a.m. the next day. We were tired and we all slept solidly.
Right now Kristina, William, and Jeff are off sightseeing and checking out book stores for a Lonely Planet Guidebook to Australia to help us plan the next four weeks. We came to Cairns , which is in the tropics on the east coast, with the hopes of chartering a sailboat and seeing the Great Barrier Reef . The charter didn’t materialize, but a two-day overnighter on a tour boat with 10 passengers has and we leave tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. for a sail to the reef and two days of snorkeling and diving. We hope to do some motor bike touring this afternoon, since the bicycles all are packed up for a flight to Sydney in a few days, on March 5, where I think we will start a ride on the Great Ocean Road, but that is not definite. In fact, nothing is definite, which is both disconcerting and adventurous.
Our plans are subject to change at a whim and we are whimming a lot these days because there are so many options. We tried to see all of New Zealand , and very nearly did, but that cannot happen here in Australia . The country is simply too big and our time with Jeff too short. I think I can say we have seen and experienced more of the country than 99 per cent of the population. We rode the North Island extensively from the northern most tip to within a few kilometers of Wellington before having to hop a bus back to Auckland and greet Jeff, who arrived January 28. In all, I think we rode about a thousand of the steepest, hilliest miles of my life. Same for Kristina and William.
Jeff rented a van and we retraced some of our route north to show him the giant Kauri trees, then drove the fabled scenic East Cape area before ending up in what we think is the North Island ’s premier city, Wellington . Auckland is nice, but Wellington stands out as almost breathtaking in its charm, beauty and civility. We took a ferry from there to the South Island and continued the tour at a near break-neck pace. We rode only the three Southern Alpine passes. Lewis was the easiest. We had serious expectations for Haast, but it surprisingly ended just as I thought it was starting. We rode the fabled Arthur’s pass both from east and the west. The signs said the western ascent was a 16 per cent grade, but Jeff’s averaging altimeter put it at 17 per cent. We made all three rides without loads and it was, in relative terms, not too difficult at all. I, of course, stopped quite often to catch my breath and rest. My strength seriously declines on steep climbs. I’m quite strong on anything 8 per cent or more, though, with the emphasis on less.
William’s progress has been not unexpected. He had his 15th birthday on the road and by the time we climbed Arthur’s Pass, he was quite strong, and handily beat me and even, on a rare occasion, finished before Kristina who spent quite a bit of time waiting on me. William even climbed what is reputed to be the steepest city street in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, in Dunedin , which was said to be a 36 per cent grade. He zigzagged a lot and stopped several times, but he made it on his second try. He had mechanical problems with the bike the first time and had to come down for a quick repair. Jeff and Kristina were impressed, but they said they would not be truly impressed until he rode the long 34 per cent Baxter and Fargo streets where they grew up in Los Angeles . William was justifiably proud of his accomplishment.
A highlight for me was visiting Invercargill, at what I called the bottom of the world. At the southernmost edge of the South Island , it was where the fabled Burt Munro, object of the movie The World’s Fastest Indian, lived and worked. It was an amazing town that has yet to cash in on the booming tourist business of the rest of the country. Get the film and watch it if you have not already done so. It is wonderful and, according to persons we met who had ties to him, was quite accurately done with only a couple of bits of dramatic license taken. If you’re not familiar with the story, it is that of an elderly man who took a motorcycle – a 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle – with a small engine and made it go more than 200 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in America . I know it sounds simplistic, but take my word that it is a fun and inspiring film with much humor. Anthony Hopkins plays Burt Munro and he does a wonderful job. His pedicure scene alone is worth the price of the rental.
The only real difficulty we had was when we got to Christchurch . I called it the land of No Vacancy , because there was not a single room in the entire city available and I do mean that literally. Not only were we there at the very peak of the summer season, but it seemed the WWF – World Wrestling Federation – was in town from America for the first time ever and everyone came out of the woodwork to see the spectacle. Also in town was the PGA for a golf tournament . . . along with a couple of other major events. We spent three and a half hours trying to find a room and ended nearly 30 miles out of town for one night, then at a campground back in the city – the only place we could get for Saturday night. A big population left Sunday, so we were able to rent a nice two-bedroom motel unit at the campground to prepare for our flight yesterday.
Christchurch was the only city I did not like. We had taken a couple of tour cruises – Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound – about 10 days ago and while there we met a woman who described Christchurch as “. . . the Los Angeles of New Zealand”. It was an apt description. Kristina, Jeff and William reported there was about a two square block section of the city that qualified as charming. The rest was suburban tract sprawl with very poor traffic planning.
The people of New Zealand are terrific and for the most part overwhelmingly polite. We had no fewer than eight invitations to stay as house guests, two of which we accepted. As with we Americans, though, many of them turn into monsters once behind the wheel of their automobile. Too many gave little or no quarter to the cyclists and we came to classify New Zealand’s roads as the most dangerous cycling roads we have ever ridden, and that includes a lot of territory. Of course, that was only for the North Island , since we did not have that much experience on the ever more popular South Island . More than once, however, I was quoted a claim that New Zealand had the highest per capita highway death rate than any country in the world. I doubt it is true, but I may be wrong. They drive at amazingly dangerous speeds on shoulderless two lane roads.
It seems we saw a hundred cycle tourists spanning all ages and generations, 90 per cent of whom were riding the South Island . That may be an exaggeration, but not by much. There are hills and the Alps to cross on the South Island , but there also are long flat or gently undulating lands between, and the Canterbury Plains are a big flat treat. The beauty of the South Island simply must be seen.
The most memorable experience of my New Zealand ride was not a ride at all, but a trek. Jeff, who has made countless treks, escorted us on a three-day 55 kilometer Alpine backpack across the Keplar Track. It was a first for Kristina, William and me and a thrill. We carried all our food for the three days, including an extra day . . . just in case. It was difficult. We gained a little over 4,000 feet in five or six kilometers the first day (Kristina and Jeff did about 5,000 feet because of a side trip to the top of Mt. Luxmore ). The second day was along the ridge of the Alps and it went up and down and up and then down, down, down in what turned out to be the most difficult of the trek. The last day covered a mostly down and level 22 kilometers. Let me tell you, I hobbled for the following two days, but it was such a thrill, we all want to do more and are considering a five-day trek in Tasmania. The only problem is that the season is getting late and Tasmania is a long, long way south. That means cold. Old and cold don’t go together, except for Jeff who has done that sort of stuff for days at a time in the snow.
We now look forward to our Australian experience and will let you know what we do just as soon as we know. In the meantime, do know we miss everyone, but not the weather, which I understand is less than hospitable right now. Here at Cairns , the pilot yesterday said it was a very pleasant early autumn day with the temperature at about 26 degrees, which I think translates to about 83 Fahrenheit or so.
Do take care and we would love to hear from you.
Hugs to all,
Wayne
And Kristina, William and Jeff

Mar. 10, 2007 - My favorite time of the year.....

The sun is shining, the windows are open and there is a soft breeze blowing as I listen to Enya on the stereo.  I was up a 6:30 am this morning and enjoyed the peaceful, hazy morning while I took the dogs for a walk.  Spring is my favorite time of the year and it has arrived!  Yesterday was 73 and today will be in the upper-60's...beautiful!!!  I plan on planting the cool weather vegetables in the garden tomorrow.  Today, I am planting irises around the house.
I love Spring because it is a time of new beginnings.  No matter what has happened in the past there is always a fresh start in the Spring.  Flowers start to peep out from the cold gound, little buds appear on the branches of trees with the promise  leaves to shade us from the heat of the summer.  The air is crisp and clear and clean.  I feel so energized!
We have a new puppy, Kaya, and she is just darling!  She is half  malamute, one quarter wolf and one quarter husky.  At 9 weeks old she is nearly the size of my Mom's miniature poodle!  We got her on Joshua's birthday.  He turned 9 on March 5th.  Hard to believe my baby is already 9.
The job at Wal-mart is coming along.  I am  enjoying it, but will be glad when it is over and I can be back home doing what I love!  I feel like a fish out of water.  I spend my lunch hour outside, usually by myself.  It would be nice to share it with someone...I am just so much older than most of the other re-model crew and I guess I don't have much in common with them.
I am starting to get a bit lonely.  I really haven't made any friends, yet, and I miss my dear friend, Kim, so much!!!  I have been thinking of Keith and Rudy and hope that they are happy in Heaven and realize how much we miss them!  Playing guitar around the bon fires of Snug Harbor, the Chesapeake Bay and the great gatherings we use to have!  Oh,  what fun we had!!  I use to love listening to my husband and Kevin play guitar and sing until the wee hours of the morning, then getting up, making coffee and sitting on the back porch watching the sun play on the water of the Cheasapeake Bay!
I am slowly and steadily losing weight and starting to look and feel like my old self, again!  Richard says I have changed.  I told him I didn't think I had , but maybe I have.  The job at Wal-mart has made me realize that I am still more than just a "mom" and a "wife".  Now, I *love* being a mom and wife however, it is so eay to lose sight of your true self, your own identity~to get lost in the everyday trappings of what is expected of you.  It is nice to have something of my own.  I guess it is that I feel "empowered".  I now know that the family can survive just fine without me.   None the less,  I am looking forward to being home, again!

Here is a photo of Kaya.....

Kaya.....9 weeks old

William is in Melbourne, Australia.  Tomorrow he is going on a 6 day backpacking trip through Tasmania!

I need to go.  I will post the letter and photos from Australia later tonight!

Feb. 9, 2007 - The Wizard and Wal-Mart

Life comes at you fast...and boy has it been busy!
I started working at Wal-Mart two and a half weeks ago to help with the re-model project.  This is a temporary, full time job and will end April 20th.  It has been quite an experience!  I have never punched a time clock or worked for a large corporation.  However, I am enjoying it.  I nearly walked out, today, because I really have a hard time with the "holier than thou" attitude one of the re-model overseers has.  But, I bit my tongue and hung in there.  It is only temporary.
Life at home is another story!  My family seems to be barely surviving without me. But, they are surviving.  I am beginning to feel apppreciated.  I leave very easy school assignments for my husband to oversee and I am lucky if those get done.  However, he is getting a good handle on all the paperwork I do for the mobile home park we own and it is a relief to not have to do that for awhile!  We are going to put our park up for sale while the neighboring park is for sale...who knows, maybe a good offer will come in, we have nothing to lose!  There is an interesting property we are looking at in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
So, the Wizard of Oz is coming along nicely.  Both Sara and Joshua are doing great with their rehearsals and I will finish the detail work on their costumes tomorrow.  Next week will be very hectic.  The rehearsal schedule is nearly every day and I will have to go directly from work to the theatre.  I will post photos of the costumes as soon as I can.
I am totally exhausted and I will probably have to edit this later!  Off to bed!
