Counting Our Pages...

Well, it always seems to happen to me around this time of year.  I start to count the pages left in our school books.  It always scares me a bit when I start to realize that we're on page 185 and there are 275 pages in the book!  We don't hold to textbooks completely, but it does lay heavy when I notice I spent all that money on curriculum and I'm not going to finish it???  Oh, I have to sit back and take a breath...  then replay all those conversations I've had with other homeschool moms... then I feel pretty good.  How are you feeling?

Lets see if I can help your anxious "I'm almost done with school but I have so much to do" blues....   Did you know that most public and private schools only finish 60% of their curriculum each year.   Yep!  I struggled for years trying to figure out how the schools covered all the material in  approx. 180 days when I can't seem to come close.    Well, after much research, I found that they don't.  My eyes were opened when my friend, who put her child in expensive private school (used Abeka curriculum), was handed a half completed workbook at the end of the year.  When the mom asked why it was half done (thinking that her daughter must be behind), the teacher said "Isn't it great?  We actually got half way through".  Surprisingly enough, not one school building institution finishes their curriculum by the end of the year.  Homeschoolers finish more pages in a traditional school book than any other school building institution.  In fact, by the time May approaches, most public schools are playing "catch-up" on materials and usually don't cover all that they need to.  Private schools, at least, usually send the unused curriculum books home with the child at the end of the year.  Aren't you glad you get to keep your books and move at your own pace... knowing exactly what they are learning... all the time?  I am.  Amazing!

My point...  Have no worries if you feel like you're behind...  You're probably ahead!

Thanks for visiting.  Be sure to tell me you stopped by - I'd love to visit your blog :)
