Breaking Tradition - Part 1

I’ll never forget walking into my first group of homeschool mom’s and being asked one of the most popular questions out there: “What philosophy do you follow?” Wow! I didn’t know there was a philosophy for homeschooling – at least at that time (5 yrs ago). Well, as the years passed I still really didn’t feel comfortable or felt like I fell into any particular “category” or “philosophy” for homeschooling; Rather, I accepted that all I needed was some textbooks, a chalkboard, some teacher manuals, and really good ideas to make a successful school year! Hmmm.

Well, after word got out about that choice of curriculum, I was classified as “traditional”. The funny thing about it, I didn't feel traditional in my teaching... so, I decided to break TRADITION (rebel).  I admit it...  I'm stepping out...  admitting that I'm not exactly a traditional homeschool mom (tell me I'm not alone).   Yes, I have been adding a little flavor to our studies. I admit it. I’m mixing a cup of unit studies with textbooks, and a pinch of eclectic education with some unschooling. Didn’t think it was possible? Well, I found that my children learn better when I incorporate some art with language; history with textbook science; and natural experience with everything!!! Oh, the joy of having freedom in homeschooling!

Ok. So, now I guess I have to admit to the "homeschool club" that I belong to an “everything goes” homeschool philosophy.  Hmmm.   Anyone else with me on this???
