When I was a child, my mom always steered us away from sweets. We never got the sweet cereal nor the chocolate mix for our milk. In fact, we were ushered to take a spoonful of cod liver oil every day (yuck!) on top of our daily vitamins. So, tell me... Why is it that when a "mom" becomes a "Grandma" they suddenly throw caution to the wind and fill their purse up with candy? Well, maybe not all Grandma's do this, but my mom does.
Depending on your sweet tooth, Grandma has just about anything you want tucked inside a baggie inside her purse. Yes, there are caramels, gum (all types), chocolate and lollipops; Starbursts and Smarties, jelly beans and hard candy. All the kids know about her stash... even the neighbor kids!!! Grandma puts them there just for them. She's got a gift... the more you lean towards a certain type of candy, you can be sure to find more pieces of that particular candy in her purse by her next visit. Amazing. With five grandkids and a numberous amount neighbor kids that seem to gather when she's near... the candy never runs out.
The good thing... Grandma only lets the kids have maybe one or two pieces of candy each visit. At least that is what is told to me. It might be a completely different story when I'm not around. It's fun for the kids... it's something they have come to expect and be excited about. I guess it is a right of passage ~ A mom is supposed to check the teeth after brushing, buy good and healthy cereal, give baths and so forth... Whereas, a grandparents job is to spoil and love on the grandkids.
