Reaching The End Of 2nd Grade

The Second Grade Project

As I shared last Monday, I like to take a look at our neighborhood kids school projects just to get ideas for my own children in their studies.  Unlike the 5th grade report my oldest is doing, I wasn't able to find many ideas for the second grade. This was a bummer because since we usually have a promotion night with our co-op group, I thought I better have something on display for both kiddos.  Then I remembered my blog friends...  and I got on the ball!  I started to thumb through all my favorite blogs for ideas and finally made a decision.  I decided upon a Lapbook activity.   If you have not looked into doing a lapbook, you should try one sometime.  There is usually a lapbook for every subject matter - great for the creative child. There is even a private Internet community for homeschool mom's to get help and directions for lapbooks.  The Internet is a great resource!!!

Well, now that I decided upon a lapbook, I had to decide upon a subject.  So,  I took last weeks BIG event (my son being stung by a Bee) and decided to study Bees!  Isn't that just like a homeschool teacher!!!  I was able to find a pretty good lapbook study on Bees at Homeschoolshare.com.  It had all the information printed right there for me. No major research or creativeness left for me to do.   I just needed to push my print button! Easy, easy, easy!!!   You know, if you don't have a motivated learner...  try a lapbook.  They work wonderfully!!!  The kids learn without them knowing they are learning!!!  Great mom trick (shhh!).   Plus, it gets them to focus and enjoy the last few weeks of school.

So, that is what we are working on for the end of second grade.  Of course, I have incorporated some "clay modeling" for this study, too.  After we are finished with our lapbook, my son will mold a sculpture of a Bee.  It will be a great addition to the lapbook!  I hope to have photos to share soon...
