Welcome to my little corner of the beach in Southern California. I am married to one amazing man who loves me with a heart of Christ and who has blessed me to be a stay-at-home homeschool mom of three wonderful blessings. My heart is for homeschool ministry and helping others through encouragement. I've been homeschooling since the beginning and love it more and more every day.

I began my journey in homeschooling based on Bible scriptures found in Deuteronomy chapter 6:6-12 Homeschooling With Encouragement is dedicated to encourage the homeschool mom. I am the owner of a Yahoo group, monthly newsletter, two homeschool blogs, and the Weblink Education website.

Schooling Year Round

Planning Ahead

Recently I have had so many people contact me about my year round school schedule on my blog.  It is a schedule that my friend and I created over three years ago.  It seemed to meet the standards of the 180 required school days and give us much needed breaks during the year for travel and personal use.  I wanted to share that schedule with you and explain how you can make one yourself.

First, if you use any sort of structured textbook curriculum, you will notice that most concepts are broken up into six week sections. That means that they will introduce, implement and review a new concept every six weeks.  I know that ABeka does this, Alpha Omega, Horizon, Weaver...etc.   So, why not create a schedule that supports that six weeks study period and then take a break?  It is proven that children retain and understand new things better when given a break after a concept is thoroughly explained. I have seen it improve my children's understanding tremendously.  Even when one of my boys don't exactly convince me that they completely understand something by the end of six weeks - By the end of our 2 week break they seem to have digested what was taught and can perform at the level I desire.  This has happened over and over again. So, I encourage you do try something new - it just might do the same for your family.

If you would like to try the "Independent Year Round Schedule" (six week on/2 week off schedule) for next year, but you do not want to follow this exact one  - you can make one yourself by following the pattern below.  Remember that there are six six-week sessions in a school year (180 school days).
  1. Get our your calendar for the next school year
  2. Mark the days you have planned for vacation and so forth
  3. Mark off days that you wish to have off during the year (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter...etc)
  4. Pick a start date (best if you begin in July or early August)
  5. Count out six weeks (This is your first session)
  6. Mark off two weeks after those six weeks (these are your "off-track" break periods)
  7. Repeat #5 and #6 (5 more times for a total of six sessions)
You are welcome to use my "Independent Year Round Schedule" that I followed this year - it is posted on my right side bar.  You'll just have to change the dates slightly to fit the new year.  I will have many more suggested traditional year round schedules in my new E-book due to be released the end of June.

Enjoy!

I love the idea, sometimes I think it might depend on where you live too. I know when we move we will want to use every bit of daylight and warm weather for outdoor things but not want to get out as much in the darker winter months. Here though it is the opposite because it is SOOO hot! sometimes we have to adjust for the seasons where we live as well as the other days off we would like. If I am really honest, I would want a lot more free days than school days.

We used to run Jan- Oct. for school since hubby's busy time is around Christmas.

We tend to change things around with every move that we make!

I am doing year round school with my son. It's better for him to keep his brain working. And it does gives us that flexiblilty we need. Next week we will have company,so I don't have to stress over getting everything done. Works for our family.

I'm contemplating your year round schedule! I think it would work well with our hs techniques... not to mention we will have alot going on with a possible move, etc.... we are already a bit messed up for this year and will probably be schooling most of the summer anyway... so then I take two weeks off and start all over again! It's sounding pretty good to me... Thanks for sharing.

I love this schedule. The kids didn't do so well this year without my watching over them every day. I'm sorry to say that we will be finishing the rest of this school year over the summer. ;o( Bummer! Thanks for sharing your schedule.

Love ya,
Lori

My New Book Is Finished!

Be encouraged in creating a successful school schedule and school day. Read how to beat homeschool burnout and how to evaluate your progress as a parent/teacher. Then, finally understand what it means to apply the "eclectic" or "Charlotte Mason" approach to your homeschooling. Also, you'll be comforted to read the hearts of moms as they tackle the difficult question about socialization. This is a must read; a book that will encourage your journey through homeschooling.
