About SoCalVal

Photobucket

Welcome to my little corner of the beach in Southern California. I am married to one amazing man who loves me with a heart of Christ and who has blessed me to be a stay-at-home homeschool mom of three wonderful blessings. My heart is for homeschool ministry and helping others through encouragement. I've been homeschooling since the beginning and love it more and more every day.

I began my journey in homeschooling based on Bible scriptures found in Deuteronomy chapter 6:6-12 Homeschooling With Encouragement is dedicated to encourage the homeschool mom. I am the owner of a Yahoo group, monthly newsletter, two homeschool blogs, and the Weblink Education website.

"Satan's "best shot" against God and the people of God was the crucifixion of the God-man, Jesus Christ. And in that act, he unwittingly not only sealed his own doom, he opened the door for Jesus to offer redemption and salvation to the whole world. But that's not the end of the matter. Believe it or not, Satan can also accomplish God's purposes through the trials and afflictions that he throws our way. How? By helping us to cling to the Lord in dependence and prayer and, as a result, growing stronger spiritually."

Learning Curve

Photobucket
The Three Amigos

There is always a learning curve when you go on vacation.  Sometimes the curve is a good thing and sometimes the curve isn't so great.  Our eight day vacation was one of both.  Coming from a state that is full of high entertainment, the farm was a great experience to taste and feel.  Not only did we become used to the slow pace of life, but the children learned the value of land and each other.  Away from friends, television, and computers,  my three amigos worked together in finding new things to occupy their time.  Our oldest son took more walks around the farm and talked more openly with his dad; the younger son learned how to be patient and enjoy his time with nature despite his cast; and the little one learned how to be more independent from me like swing on a "big girl" seat by herself.

This sort of life brought out the good moods and character in our family. Of course there was much more that they discovered within the eight days, but to find words that justify the peace and joy the slow-life brought to our family is hard to do.

As for the learning curve going  the opposite direction of a "good" thing, we had our experience on the way home. First of all, traveling during the day (14 hours) always adds a few more adventures onto the plan and a few more dollars are spent.  As dinner approached just hours from our home, we got this wild hair to stop in Las Vegas and eat somewhere quick, cheap and easy, away from the casinos.  We've heard about places like that from people - so, with our wallets hitting near empty we decided to  see what we could find.  Of course, being ignorant in this area we had a few surprises.  Well, lets just say my son summed it up when he handed my youngest son a pillow to block the billboard advertisement on the side of the bus that was beside us.  Reading the signs for t-shirts, my youngest son announces that he would like to use his allowance to buy those "ladies" walking on the streets (I use that word lightly) some clothes!  We wasted an hour trying to find Treasure Island for some fun kid pirate food - only to find out that there were no children and no pirates to see!!!  Cheap food?  Not at $21 a plate!  Needless to say, we went somewhere else.  Actually we stopped at a highly advertised Greek fast-food place for sandwiches.  However, as we walk in to be seated, my son points out the greek statues carefully places throughout the restaurant - you guess it...  unclothed!  Oh!  Well, we had to eat (it was late)...  so I tried to explain the history of Greece and the meaning of statues (homeschooling mom at work).  However, a phone conversation with grandma later revealed that what I said didn't stick.  "Yeah Grandma, we went from a place with Christian people to a place that didn't have one Christian in it.  We saw a bunch of naked people."  That went over well, let me tell you.   Anyway, our learning curve was large in scale - but the lasting impression of our simple vacation is unmeasurable.  It is good and we can't wait to see what the Lord leads us to do next.

Sounds like a wonderful vacation! Keeping it simple is often the nicest of times- the nicest of things!
Your driving/supper experience made me smile but I am sure it was quite frustrating at the time.
Glad you have a great time! Thanks for sharing with us. The photos were nice- you have a nice family!

It sounds like such a great time in CO. The time in Vegas, lets just say it brought a smile to my face. My parents took me to Vegas when I was a kid, it is a very interesting place, and that was about 30 years ago. I can only imagine what it looks like now. :)

Hi Val,
I will be praying for you all over the next few months. I love reading about your vacation and the things the Lord is doing in your life.

Telluride is beautiful and serene! We visited in 2000, I have some special memories of it. Sadly that was before I had a digital camera, because I would love to share a few.

Blessings,
Linda

Great pics! What a nice shot of your 3 together. And I love the 'rear view" shot of your daughter on the swing.

I'm glad you didn't post any photos of the "n*ked people". :-)

LOL, I guess your son's summary to Grandma pretty much sums it up, huh? Reading your last post too, it sounds like you had a great time and that you all have big plans for the near future. That's great! CO is beautiful. I wouldn't mind living there myself. For some reason I am sent the CO Homeschool Assoc. magazine - I love it! How did the job interviews go for your husband? Anything promising? I pray good things for you and yours to come! ((hugs))

Okay my dear I am ROFLing! On BTW welcome home! We visited LV 2 years ago after a 23 year absence and oh my our experience was so much like yours. I am so proud of my kids ( and yours) because they knew in there hearts that it was "sinful" stuff. All the training and bringing up comes to moments like these! They really have no desire to revisit LV. Unless of course it is to fly in to return to Grand Canyon and to California, which is what we did two years ago.
I am so glad you all got to just be family. Blessings
