Not only are the seasons changing, but so is my curriculum. As you may know, I have changed quite a few things regarding curriculum this year. All due to finances and the fact that my oldest child is entering junior high (we felt our son needed more structure to his school day with the material he was studying). Well, 20 days into school and I'm finding things just aren't working the way I would like them to. Structure is working, but that's not what is wrong (in my opinion). So, what does a homeschooling mom do when things aren't working? We change! So, just as the leaves on my trees turn a golden brown, my title in textbooks are changing too. To be exact, I'm changing History!
I've spent the last week or so researching different history curriculum to see what would parallel the charter school curriculum that I was given. You know, find something that covers the same thing, but gives a Christian point of view instead of secular. I love the structure of the virtual academy, but the material is questionable. I'm not too sure if I want my 10 year old studying about Buddha or Islam. Of course I want him to know about the difference in the religions of the world, but not to the point of memorizing certain aspects of the religion for tests sake. So, I exhausted my Yahoo group and different websites for help.
I think I found a healthy alternative for the charter school history curriculum. I found a book from the Beautiful Feet webstore " Streams Of Civilization". Unfortunately, I've had several people tell me that the textbook is for high school level students, but then I found Donna Young website where she has laid out a schedule for younger children. I think it will work. It's the only book I could find that covers the same topics as " The Human Odyssey" textbook we have now (creation - 1600's). Please feel free to click on the links and give your opinion. Usually students don't learn about world religions or the beginning of man until high school. I'm not sure why this virtual school is requiring us to teach it to 6th graders. I just hope to cover the right material (from a Christian perspective) for their testing.
I'm interested in hearing what you use for 6th grade and if it covers this time period. Has anyone used "Streams Of Civilization" for curriculum with children around the 6th grade? Please share. |
