Tightwad Tuesday
Posted in Tightwad Tuesday

If you'd like to join in on the fun of Tightwad Tuesday, please go see Mary over @ Candagirl and join us!
This is my first TT so here goes!
My hubby loves Mac and Cheese. Easy, right? NOOOO! He likes his mother's HOMEMADE mac and cheese. Well, my youngest likes the box stuff. (He's REALLY easy!!) I decided, after viewing last weeks TT, to use Mary's, over @ Canadagirl, homemade cheese sauce to try and be frugal yet pleasing to all.
I've created a hit! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here it is:
Take the noodles from a box of mac and cheese, (or any noodle you like) and cook them. Make this cheese sauce and add together. Voila! Homemade mac and cheese!
Cheese sauce:
Melt 2 tbsp butter in a saucepan. Blend in 2 tbsp of flour. Combine it with 1 cup of milk and salt and pepper to taste. Cook until sauce thickens. Add a 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and cook until smooth.
(A little trick my hubby's G'Ma taught me-warm your milk up before adding it and when stirring it in, take the pan off the heat and blend it until smooth. Then put it back on the heat to add the cheese!)
I am sooooo tight that I used the shredded taco cheese we had eaten over the weekend with our tacos! I also shredded up some extra cheddar we use for sandwiches and added that as well. My family is pretty cheesey so there's never too much!!
No smart comments from the peanut gallery please! That means you, SS!! :}
I hope you enjoy!! We did!

This recipe is DELICIOUS!!! I tried it and it satisfied my family totally! Our recommendation: one box of Barilla pasta with double the amount of cheese sauce. Voila!! We can eat mac'n cheese again!! Yay!!! (I refused to buy the boxed variety) It was so smooth and absolutely NO CLUMPS at all!! Man, I'm getting so hungry....
Chat with you later, girly-girl? And please notice I kept my comments to myself. lol

My kids love homemade Mac & Cheese! My mom taught me how to make cheese sauce and it took me a while to perfect it. We like it extra cheesy!
Thanks for sharing!

I have been making my own sauces for years. They are so much cheaper, and usually better too!

So...you don't use the dry "junk" from the mac and cheese box. Just the noodles? Wouldn't it save even more money to just buy a sack of elbow macaroni? Maybe I didn't read it clearly? I am rushing through blogging so I can go on a bike ride.
I must have missed something here....

I haven't been brave enough to try a cheese sauce! Your dish sounds yummy.
Your children may be too old for the book, but they might like the illustrations - they're so funny! My teens and I first read the book while we were waiting for a pediatrician's appointment.

Real homemade Mac and Cheese is one thing that I haven't learned how to make yet. It's about time that I try it.Your recipe looks simple enough for me to do. I like quick and easy.
