Science Lab: Seed Experiments

Posted in Science Lab

Our first plant experiment in God's Design For Life: The World of Plants was seeing what things a seed needed to grow. You can see our other projects at a previous post.

Each baggie had different variables in it. The #1 baggie was our control group.  It had all the variables (water, warmth, light and air) we were using in this experiment.

We placed #1 by my kitchen window along with baggie #3 (warmth, light, air) and baggie #4 (warmth, light, water, no air).

Next we placed baggie #2 (water, air) in the refrigerator. (Like his chocolate stained face? I think it was m&m's!)

Finally we placed #5 (warmth, air, water, no light) in the hall closet.

After some time...can't remember exactly how much time because we weren't writing it down...(oops!) Here is our #1 baggie!

Pretty cool huh!? Our #5 baggie worked really well too, but wasn't as green because it needed the sunlight. When we put it out in the sun, it did turn green! Pretty cool!

We used dried black beans from my kitchen cupboards. It worked suprisingly well!

We did this clear back in April...haven't worked much more through the science book yet, but we have been tending my real live garden. We'll start up the book again in a couple of weeks.

Science Lab: Plant Cells

Posted in Science Lab

We are starting a new Science book this spring. It's called, God's Design For Life: The World of Plants. We picked up this curriculum over at our friends Answers In Genesis. We have successfully completed the first 5 lessons and are enjoying the journey.

The kids are really getting into copying all that I write on the white board into their Science Lab Books. Who would've guessed!

We have had a wonderful time learning what goes on in our cells and plant cells. The kids have drawn pictures of a cell,

....made a cell model out of paper

and a 3-D model with our favorite, blue Jello!

All the essenials for a 3-D model (well, at least at our house!): Blue Jello, Green Wasabi peas, Craisans, a pink gumball, zip-lock bag and a shoe box.

Craisans as the mitochondria!

Green Wasabi Peas as the Chloroplasts!

A pink gum ball as the nucleus!

Ziplock bag as the cell membrane and a shoe box as the cell wall!

So far we are enjoying this fantastic introduction to Life Science! We think this is a wonderful early elementary curriculum!

Fun With Dry Ice!

Posted in Science Lab

Last Thursday, my husband and son brought home dry ice from my son's doctors appointment. They were so excited to try some experiments with it! So my husband went online and found some experiments to try with dry ice. He has us all gather around and marvel at this strange but cool thing called dry ice! Tons of fun!!!

Safety first!!!

Awesome hubby starting the experiment of the screaming spoon.

Piece of dry ice inside a balloon causes the balloon to expand over time! This is a photo of it half way through the expansion!

What a little warm water and dry ice can do in a cool blue vase!

Another cool shot of it!

This is what happens when you add a little bit of dish soap! It was a volcano of bubbles!!!!

An ordinary leaf, some water, some dry ice and some rubbing alcohol (although I think we were supposed to use a different kind of alcohol).

The leaf shattered because of it's highly frozen state after sitting in the above concoction for a while!

So glad my hubby embraced a spontaneous science experiment moment! We had tons of fun!
